. Color Coding

The yellow 4 and 2 represent fullseconds. and all other figures represent the denominator of a frac-tion. (Thus. 30 equals 1/30 sec.)The yellow B represents BULB.When the Shutter Speed Dial is setto B, the Shutter remains open aslong as the Shutter Release Suttonis depressed. The red 60 (1/60 sec) representsthe highest permissible shutterspeed for electronic flash syn-chronization.The red 0 mark is the AE position.and 0 is the AE Lock position. These marks are used with the AEPrism Finder N. (When the PrismFinder N and Waist Level Finder Nare attached, and the dial is set at0 or 5. the effective shutter speedis 1/1000 sec).Set the Shutter Speed Dial only tothe click stop position. Using anintermediate positions will result ininaccurate exposure.

When selecting shutter speed settingsother than the C* and R marks, releasethe lock by pushing the button @ infomt of the dial. Turn the ShutterSpeed Dial to your desired speed.

Page 21: Mamiya M645 Super Instruction Manual

While looking through the viewfin-der, adjust the lens Focusing Ringuntil the most important part of thesubject appears sharp and clear.Extremely accurate focusing issimplified by the split-image range-finder spot located in the center ofthe Focusing Screen. (to use, match up the image on both sidesof the split-image.)

The split-image rangefinder spot issurrounded by a microprism collarwhich fractures the image wheneverit goes slightly out-of-focus. Con-sequently, this is an invaluable aidfor pinpoint focusing accuracy. The outer ground glass ring (whichencircles the microprism collar) canbe also used for focusing.

*As an accessory, Mamiya offersDiopter Correction Lenses which canbe attached to the viewfinders. Nearand farsighted persons will find theseaccessories useful for obtainingaccurate focus.

*The Focusing Screen is interchange-able. To change screens, refer to theinstruction manual supplied with thescreens.

Set the desired f/stop on the ApertureRing @ by aligning the f/number withthe red reference dot @. (The ApertureRing has a click stop for each f/stop.In-between clicks can also be used.)

AM (Auto/Manual) Lever

1. In normal photography, set AMLever so that character “A” is visiblein the lever window. If you do so,the aperture will remain wide open, stopping the lens down only duringshutter operation.

2. Moving the AM Lever of the lens sothat “M” is visible will stop the lensdown to the preselected aperture, thus making it possible to confirmeffect of the aperture through theviewfinder.

20

Page 23: Mamiya M645 Super Instruction Manual

1. The Shutter Release Button @ is a2-step type. The release pressurewill charge halfway through thecycle. The first step light up themetering related display. Thesecond step is the electromagneticshutter release position. (The firstposition operates only when the AEPrism Finder N is used.)

If the film is not completelyadvanced, the Dark Slide is notremoved or the battery isexhausted, the shutter can not bereleased even when pushing theShutter Release Button. After releasing the shutter, theWind-up Crank is unlocked auto-matically, making it possible totransport the film to the next frame.

When this setting is used, the shutterspeed is always 1/60 sec. regardlessof the Shutter Speed Dial postion. When your camera is not in use, setthe Shutter Release Selector to thered dot so that the power is turnedOFF.

*In normal photography, set the shutterRelease Selctor @ to the “NORMAL”(white square) position.

*Note: Always make sure that theShutter Release Selector clicks intoposition. When the battery isexhausted during photography, andthe shutter can not be released, setthe selector to the yellow dot, andyou will be able to use the mechanicalshutter at 1/60 sec.

Depth-of-field refers to the total area(foreground and background) whichwill appear in sharp focus. The area ofsharpness (depth-of-field) dependsupon the distance the lens is focusedat, the f/stop (or aperture) being used, and the focal length of the lens. The area that will appear sharp can bedetermined as follows:

1. Depth-of-field can be determinedby referring to the Depth-of-fieldScale engraved on the lens. For example, with the 60mm f/2.8Nlens focused at 10 ft. (3m) and theAperture Ring set to f/22, the Depth-of-field Scale reveals that every-thing from about 7ft. (2m) to about20 ft. (6m) will appear sharp.

2. The lens can also be stopped downto the preselected aperture fordirect viewing of the depth-of-fieldby using the AM Lever on the lens.To do so, move the lever so that “M”(manual) is visible. When the lensis set to “M” you can take a pictureobserving the depth-of-field in thefinder.

sary to make a focusing adjustment inorder to achieve accurate focus. Thisis becuase the focus position of theimage deviates from normal since theinfrared ray wavelength is longer.

Focusing Adjustment Procedure:1. The red dot or line on the right side

To take time exposures, set the ShutterSpeed Dial to "B" and use a cablerelease with a lock provision. Insertingan optional Cable Release Adapter intothe Auxiliary Release Contact of camerabody, allows a cable release to beused.

When the camera i s mounted on atripod for copy work, close-ups or tele-photography at long (slow) shutterspeeds, the small amount of vibrationdue to “mirror-bounce”, which is nor-mally o f no consequence, may causeblurring of the image due to the highmagnification encountered in extremeclose-ups and telephotography. Mirrorshock can be eliminated by locking themirror in the up position before makingthe exposure.

. 1. To lock the mirror up, move theMirror Lock-up Lever to “M. UP”until it clicks.

2. With this setting, the mirror islocked up. Naturally, no image canbe seen on the screen through theviewfinder. Consequently, whenadjustments for composition andfocusing are required return themirror to its normal position. (lowerthe mirror).

*When using the 70mm Leaf ShutterLens, be sure to refer to the instruc-tions packed with the lens.

base of the camera‘s tripod socket.using a regular screwdriver (-).Next, remove the adapter @ by insert-ing a coin in the slot. Finally, attach the camera to the 3/8"tripod.

When attached to the accessoryRevolving Tripod Adapter, theMamiya M645 Super can be instantlyrotated to change from vertical tohorizontal format, or vice versa.

In order to have the capability ofdelayed shutter release, you must firstinsert an optional Cable ReleaseAdapter 2 into the camera’s AuxiliaryRelease Contact, and any commer-cially available self-timer cable releasecan be used.

Page 33: Mamiya M645 Super Instruction Manual

When the camera is not used for a long period of time, remove the battery and any film from the camera.Avoid storing the camera for prolonged periods of time in adamp or salty atmosphere. (Color film should be stored atthe manufacturer’s recommended temperatures,)Since cameras are precision instruments, avoid shocksand rough handling. When the camera is stored for a long time, periodicallyremove the camera and release the shutter several timesto keep the camera in good condition.

Cleaning:Never touch the lens or mirror surfaces. When your camerais contaminated with dust, fingerprints and so on, blowaway the dust particles with a blower, and clean the lenssurface with lens cleaning tissue and lens cleaner. Merelyblowing dust particles off the mirror surface is sufficient-never touch the mirror.

Periodic Check:Periodically check the camera to make sure that it is inworking order. This is especially important before a photo-graphic assignment. (Check the battery, flash synchroniza-tion, mirror and shutter movement, film wind, diaphragmautomation and so on.)If the camera is malfunctioning, take it to the nearestauthorized Mamiya Service Center for repairs.
