LETTERS TO THEEDITOR

Delay in receipt of flood relief amountSir, This letter has been written in the com-

mon interest of the residents of K. R. KoilStreet, West Mambalam, which comes underWard 140.

This street was among the worst affectedduring the floods in December. The residentsincurred heavy losses as they lost most of theirbelongings. Many vehicles got damaged asthey remained submerged in water for severaldays. The State Government announced floodrelief of Rs. 5,000 for each family affected bythe floods. In this regard, government directedthe Revenue Department to conduct a door todoor survey in the affected areas and collectthe details like name and bank account num-bers for crediting the relief amount directly tothe bank account.

But, unfortunately, when the verificationwas done on our street more than 110 houseswere left out. When, in spite of several remind-ers, the authorities did not complete the surveyon our street, the left out residents submitteddetails directly to the Taluk Office. But till datethe relief amount of Rs. 5,000 has not beencredited to the bank account of any resident.

I appeal to the authorities concerned to lookinto this matter and disburse the amount with-out further delay.

I also request to the authorities to verify thatthe amount earmarked for the residents hasnot been misused. - S. Gopinath, Socialworker, West Mambalam.

EPIC forms not accepted in pollingbooths

Sir, This refers to the special camps thatwere held during the last two weekends toupdate voters’ list in polling booths.

The Election Commission of India is spend-ing crores of rupees to update the list at regularintervals to increase the voter base, but thereis laxity on the part of employees in implement-ing it.

Since the zonal offices are tied up with sev-eral other services, steps should be taken toaccept all forms in respect of voters’ list at thepolling booths. Application for the issue of‘Replacement of Elector’s Photo Identity Card’(Form ID ECI-EPIC-001) is not being acceptedat polling booths in spite of EC’s direction toaccept all forms related to the voters’ list. Theform is accepted only on weekdays between 10a.m and 12 noon at the zonal offices which isdifficult for officegoers.

It is my experience that ever since my sonattained the age of 18, from 1996 assemblyelection onwards, he has been submitting formsto get his EPIC (though allotted as per theofficial list published) which is yet to see the

light of day.As political parties are giv-

ing voters’ slip at the time ofelection, he has been voting inevery election, without the helpof EPIC. S. Muralidaran, K.K. Nagar

That Titanic FeelingThe last two months have been dominated by wife

Lakshmi’s actions which have left no space in our mindsfor things mundane, like sleep and dreams at intervals asfillers between night and day break.

A couple of hospital loaned, trained nurses kept vigilaround her bed through the several nights until the regularlight of the smiling morning sunprised open my sticky eyesto see if Lakshmi is back to the good old days when sleepwas her tonic for good health.

The negative sleep report from the two nurses made meresolve to move to the so-far-unused 40’ x 40’ bedroom witha bed choke-filled with bric-a-brac and no cotton or silkcotton or any such civilised comforter for tired limbs of aloving caretaker.

Though each eyelid weighed half a ton, I defied the salveof sleep because I remembered my granny’s wisecrackthat if one is not sure of success, it is better not to makean ass of oneself. She lived up to 101! I rarely found herwrong. That was one of the gems of the last century, notthis.

There was another big room inviting my temporarytenancy but a recent guest-occupant, through his infernalsnore in a fleeting one-night sleep, shook up a partitionwall, and sleep that night was but a dream. Better asleepless night than a headless body the next morning!

If you live long enough, say 80 or 90 years, you will stockup enough wisdom that you can will away to yourdescendants. The omission may not be intentional buttheir circumscribed space of ‘now’ may turn out to be thespecious which is the mother of all the actions we find inthe files that fill the courtrooms. So, think before you inviteyourselves, folks!
