Meeting PlannerYour guide to successful meetings
Thanks to its strategic location in southern Sweden at the gate-
way to the European mainland, in 1524 the city of Malmö had
the honour of hosting an important meeting. King Fredrik I of
Denmark and King Gustav Vasa of Sweden met here and un-
dertook to preserve the peace between Denmark and Sweden.
Since then many meetings have been held in Malmö, and
down the centuries we’ve continued to take good care of our
visitors, whether or not they are of royal descent.
Which is a good reason why you too should choose Malmö
for your meeting! We have the resources and expertise for a
successful conference, congress or any other kind of exciting
event. On the following pages you will find all the practical
information you need to plan and implement your meeting.
Welcome to Malmö and to Sweden! Welcome to Malmö and to Sweden!
Historical facts
Malmö is mentioned in records
dating back to the 13th century.
Malmö’s oldest building is from
the 14th century.
Building work on Malmöhus Slott,
the castle in the heart of the city,
started in 1434.
Malmö and Skåne were Danish for
many centuries, becoming Swedish
in 1658.
Let’s meet in Malmö
Malmö has plenty to offer – the choice is up to you! There are
hotels and venues for all kinds of conferences and congresses.
Why not hold your conference way up on the 54th floor
of the spectacular Turning Torso, or in the medieval fort of
Malmöhus Slott? Suitable venues for larger meetings or events
include Malmö Arena and Swedbank Stadion.
Malmö is an international city with a compact, vibrant city
centre. Restaurants, bars, cafés and shops jostle alongside one
another, with the sea and a long, sandy beach close by. Areas
of natural beauty with several high-class golf courses are within
easy reach.
There are plenty of opportunities for a successful meeting in
Malmö!

In 2006 Malmö was named Sweden’s first Fair Trade City, an
award that shows how Malmö is accepting its responsibility for
a fairer, more prosperous world.
Västra Hamnen is a totally new urban district where ecological
sustainability is the key. The residential area is self-sufficient,
using renewable energy sources such as solar energy, wind
power and heat from the sea.
You can also look after the environment and your health when
you visit Malmö. Stay at an environment-friendly hotel, eat at
restaurants using organic, locally produced ingredients and buy
from shops that only sell Fair Trade products.
And take a look round Malmö by bike – our city has 410 km
of cycle paths!
Green Malmö
About Green MalmöAbout 40 per cent of residents cycle to work/university.
About 4,000 visitors a year come to study our environmental policy. In 2007 Malmö was named the world’s fourth greenest city by Grist, an environmental magazine (www.grist.org)
Malmö has the capacity to host major meetings. We already
have more than 3,500 hotel rooms, a figure that will almost
double in the next few years. You can choose anything from
five-star hotels to basic hostels. No matter where you stay, you
don’t have far to travel in Malmö, which means you make
more efficient use of your time.
If you are planning a meeting with a large number of
participants, it’s good to know that extra hotel rooms are
available within easy reach of Malmö. In the beautiful region
around the city there are many castles and manor houses
that offer accommodation with a difference and interesting
experiences.
