AWARDS

ESPID FELLOWSHIP AWARD 2018-2020

DR JANE ASTRID METZ

Jane is a paediatric registrar specialising in infectious diseases and immunology in Bristol, UK. Her interest is in Streptococcus pneumoniae and factors influencing pneumococcal transmission.

Since graduating from Imperial College, London (MBBS, BSc 1st Class Hons), Jane has focused on becoming a paediatrician working to improve global child health. Her paediatric training in London and Bristol has been complimented by her experience working as a paediatrician for Medecins Sans Frontieres in Liberia and as paediatric clinical research fellow for the University of Oxford in Nepal. She has co-authored papers reporting on Hib immunogenicity, pneumococcal carriage, and paediatric vaccine updates.

She is currently studying for her PhD hoping to advance current knowledge in the relationship between pneumococcal carriage density and transmission.

ESPID FELLOWSHIP AWARD 2018-2020

DR VIRGINIA RAMOS

Virginia Ramos-Martín completed her Specialist Training in Paediatrics in Spain with specialised training in Paediatric Tropical and Infectious Diseases in Barcelona and Panama (2010). She then obtained the MSc in Tropical Paediatrics at The Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine conducting her research project in South-East Africa (Malawi) on the neuro-auditory safety of artemisinin combination treatments for malaria in children (2011). Subsequently, she worked as a paediatrician and delivered training to health officers and doctors in Equatorial Guinea and Liberia.

She continued her training as a clinician-scientist joining the University of Liverpool (Institute of Translational Medicine) and Alder Hey Children´s Hospital (Liverpool, UK) as a clinical research fellow in 2012. Her PhD work (2013-2017) focused on understanding the PK-PD relationships of antimicrobials in neonates and children towards treatment optimization and improved clinical outcomes. She developed in vitro and in vivo models of infection linked with clinical data and PK-PD mathematical modelling to contribute building the evidence on paediatric dosage regimens associated with maximal efficacy and suppression of drug resistance. As part of this work, she completed a training stay in the Laboratory of Applied Pharmacokinetics and Bioinformatics, University of Southern California, where she learnt and applied improved methods of population PK-PD modelling and Bayesian Adaptive Control for individualised therapy. Throughout these years, she combined research, PID clinical and teaching undertakings.

ESPID-SEQIRUS FELLOWSHIP 2018-2021

DR LILLY VERHAGEN

During her medical studies in The Netherlands, Lilly Verhagen designed herself the research project which would later become her PhD on respiratory infections in Venezuelan children. Following her interest in tropical pediatrics and infectious diseases, she had come across a Venezuelan research group working in indigenous rural areas in her 5th year of medical school. She then developed and planned a series of studies to obtain insight in the influence of host, environmental and genetic factors on the susceptibility for and the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of respiratory diseases in ethnically different Venezuelan populations. With the personal stipend she obtained in 2009, at the end of her medical studies, she was able to finance her studies from 2009-2011. In 2011, the work of Lilly and others showing high prevalence rates of Streptococcus pneumoniae in isolated populations led to the obtainment of a research grant from Pfizer, manufacturer of pneumococcal conjugate vaccines. With this grant Lilly, together with a team of Dutch and Venezuelan researchers, performed the first study on the impact of vaccination with the 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccine on nasopharyngeal colonization and antibody response in South American indigenous children. Her studies resulted in a PhD, which Lilly received cum laude at April 15, 2014. Furthermore, these studies have resulted in over 20 publications in international peer-reviewed medical journals. Since March 2014, Lilly is working as a pediatric resident in the Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital in Utrecht. She is combining her residency with research projects in Dutch children with recurrent respiratory tract infections, continuing her research focused on pediatric risk groups for respiratory infections.

Henriette Rudolph was born in Dresden (Germany) on May 7, 1981. From 2000 to 2007 she studied Medicine at the Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg, where she graduated magna cum laude for her doctoral exam in Immunology. From 2003 to 2004 she studied Medicine at University of Claude Bernard Lyon (France). In 2007, she received her medical degree and started her paediatric training at the University Children’s Hospital Mannheim, Medical Faculty Mannheim, Heidelberg University. Under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Horst Schroten and Prof. Dr. Tobias Tenenbaum she started her research work in the field of Paediatric Infectious Diseases. She focused her work on the pathogenesis of viral meningitis applying different murine and human in vitro models of the Blood-Cerebrospinal-Fluid Barrier and the Blood-Brain Barrier. In 2011, she received a research award from the German Society of Paediatric Infectious Diseases (DGPI) for a clinical study on petechial rash. From 2012 to 2013, a research fellowship award from the DGPI allowed her to stay as post-doctoral fellow at the Theodor-Kocher-Institute Bern (Switzerland) in the department of neuroimmunology. Here, she could extend her knowledge in leukocyte migration in vitro and in vivo in murine models of experimental autoimmune encephalitis. Funded by the Olympia Morata Programme of Heidelberg University for female postdoctoral researchers, she could continue her research projects with a habilitation currently in preparation. From 2016 to 2018, she completed her training in „Paediatric Infectious Diseases Specialist according to a European curriculum“ at the University Children’s Hospital Mannheim.
