Summernats…It’s been on the bucket list for a while now

but I finally made it to my first Summernats. A lot of my friends have been and they kept telling me the “You just can’t put it in words” and let me tell you I have difficulty describing it now…

Thursday kicks of with the Shannons Parade down Northbourne avenue, and with 200 cars in the procession it is just a taste of things to come..

Gates opened at 1pm and I was one of the first through, I was dazzled by the cars cruising down main street, every second car had open exhausts and a supercharger, the noise was amazing, then it was the opening of the burnout pad with the masters kicking off first. I have seen burn out comps before but nothing compares to this…..

Fryday was much the same, hanging out on Main street is

the name of the game, you just sit back and watch some of the most beautiful and powerful cars in the country just cruising past. Hundreds upon hundreds of them…

I spent a couple of hours in the Grandstand watching the burnout (Silver pass tickets are the way to go) and decided to grab a feed, on the way out I thought I’d check out the upcoming contenders on the pad and I was gobsmacked to find a huge line up still waiting to have a go!!!! I’m talking top quality cars, big $$$ cars just waiting to rip it up…just incredible…

If you can only make it one day, make it Saturday, the crowds are in full swing and the atmosphere is electric, the Meguairs pavilion host the “Top 60” cars of the event and the standard is just amazing, I mean the cars are just perfect in everyway… This is something that every petrol head needs to do at least once in their lives, I’ll just leave a page with just some photos I took to do the talking but if you are on You Tube, check out the little video clip I made.. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZtJAsEA7Ao0&feature=c4-overview&list=UUkSpNLaDmUUuou4hnYkueQg

Australia Day Ute Run. The Saturday morning was spent marking out car park no go areas, putting up bunting, offloading prizes into a secure area, setting out the competition markers, erecting the Classic Holden Car Club (CHCC) marquee, arranging tables and chairs, setting up the ‘Push a Ute’ and liaising re the water slides location on the oval. Variety at the same time were setting up their cooking stations and mobile freezer and other supporting equipment. All this time we were praying that the rain would stay away or at least reduce on the Sunday.

On Sunday morning the prizes were placed on the tables in the presentation area and various final minor preparations made. The first observers started turning up about 12 o’clock (among the observers were members of the Australia Day Events Board) as did the Sunday volunteers from the CHCC (in hindsight the volunteers could have arrived at least an hour later as there was a period of inactivity until the Ute parade arrived and meals were being served). The parade of Utes from Hidden Valley arrived about 1.20pm and a small number of CHCC Holdens made up a display in the side paddock (thanks to the club members who provided their vehicles for display). The on field competitions commenced at 2.00pm and finished at 3.00pm. The Thong Throwing and the Muffler Throwing were extremely popular while the ‘Push a Ute’ had a few interested participants who tended to increase slightly after encouragement from the microphone.

In fact the volunteers were enjoying it so much they didn’t want to be rotated. The CHCC trailer was set up on the oval next to the marquee with bottled water on ice for the volunteers.

After the prize presentations all the items set up on Saturday were taken down and/or packed up ready for next year. A total of 441 vehicles attended Hidden Valley but the numbers at the Greyhound Track festivities were down a bit so a few may have gone on to other activities after Hidden Valley. However Variety raised $12,500 from the day which is an increase on last year.

All in all one of the CHCC’s favourite events which keeps getting better every year. Thanks to all the Club volunteers who made it possible. A big thank you also to the Greyhound Association of the NT for the use of their facilities and the positive support from their staff. Steve Moller
