This year we will be running ‘The Great Makybe Rise Spelling Bee’

as part of Student Success Week in Week 10. It will consist of three

rounds which will result in one of our students winning the tle of

Spelling Bee Champion.

Students from Year One - Six will parcipate in Round One in their

classrooms. The classroom winner will go through to Round Two

to find a year level winner. The year level winner will then

compete in the final round where we will find out who the Spelling

Bee Champion for 2015 will be.

The dates for each round are:

Round One (In class) - Monday, 21 September

Round Two (Year Groups) - Thursday, 24 September

Round Three (Whole School) - Friday, 25 September

Research has shown that students who demonstrate grit, set goals

and take part in deliberate pracce were the most successful in

Naonal Spelling Bees in America. We are encouraging students to

pracse their spelling at home, set goals for what they would like

to achieve and persevere to reach their goals.

The website below has some acvies for spelling pracce at

The children of Room 39 have been having fun exploring numbers and different mathemacal problems.

Each child completed a Figure Me Out poster using addion, subtracon, division and mulplicaon facts to

represent their age, how many pets they have, how many people in their family and their house numbers. The

children had so much fun compleng these posters and experimenng with numbers.

Room 39 Mathema1cal Masterpieces

The Great Makybe Rise Spelling Bee Room 23 We’re Mul1plying! This term in Room 23 we have been learning about Mulplicaon

and Division in Maths.

We have been experimenng with different ways of represenng

mulplicaon equaons. We began by exploring how we could

make a quilt using many small pieces of material. We realised that

to make a quilt, we needed some knowledge of mulplicaon as

each row needed the same number of material pieces. We started

exploring how we could make different shaped quilts using the

same number of material pieces. We made short, wide quilts and

long, thin quilts. We then applied this same knowledge and we

represented mulplicaon equaons using an array.

Instead of saying ‘mes’, we found that we could say ‘groups of’ or

‘rows of’ and this helped us to visualise the problem. We certainly

are mathemacians in Room 23!

Woolworths Earn & Learn has now finished for

2015 so a big THANK YOU to everyone that has

supported our school!

We’re now at the important stage of the program where the Scker

Sheets are collected and lodged as our Earn & Learn claim. We will

then be able to get new educaonal equipment for our school. The

more we collect, the more we can redeem. So this week, please

send in your Woolworths Earn & Learn Scker Sheets and any loose

Earn & Learn sckers you may have. They can be dropped at the

administraon office. Every li1le bit helps!

On Thursday evening, 20

August, our Senior Choir, ‘The

Makybe Rising Stars,’ performed

at the Mandurah Performing

Arts Centre as part of the 2015 Western Australian

Government Schools Music Society (WAGSMS) Concert

Series.

Thirty Six Year 3 - 6 students rehearsed every Tuesday

lunchme all year and gave up considerable me in an

intensive rehearsal period over the last week, to perfect

a challenging and excing Musical Theatre roune

called ‘Go Go Joseph.’ Their commitment and effort paid

off with an outstanding performance in front of an

audience of 750 people. I would like to congratulate

them on their successful performance. We look forward

to showing the school community our roune during

Commit to Student Success Week in Week 10 this term.

I would also like to acknowledge Talon Williams and

Addi Gardiner who willingly took on the role of hosts for

the enre evening's event. They pracced their public

speaking skills and it sure did show when they

presented absolutely beaufully, and were very

entertaining on the night. Congratulaons Talon and

Addi!

A very big thank you from all the Senior Choir to Mrs

Vrossink who also assisted over the past couple of

weeks to help our students do the best job they could

do! Thank you also to the parents and families who

supported the students in their rehearsing and

preparedness for the event.
