Nonverbal communication through voice manipulation
The way we use our voice in speaking words Using speech organs in ways other than the words:
* Tone *Pitch *Rate *Volume
Our voice is a valuable personal tool for communication
Quality of voice conveys feelings and attitude
Feelings are often judged more accurately than the content of the message
At times words may be pleasant but tone may betray the feelings
Enhance the emotional quality of certain words by stressing them
Elongate certain vowel sounds in verbs to emote
Raise the pitch at the end of an interrogative sentence
For statements raise the pitch at the middle
Using high, medium and low pitch depending on the situation
Using the variation in pitch to make verbal communication effective
Adds emotions to words Change of tone is termed intonation Monotone is boring and apathetic
Loudness and audibility At times, variability in loudness can
heighten attention Raise it when you call for action Lower it when you want to emphasize
an important point
Comfortable speed: 120-150 words per minute
Pauses after cluster of words , commas and full stops
Getting rid of non-fluencies like OK; Is that clear; You know; Isn't it; Understand; I mean; Actually.
Use slow delivery with a soft voice to capture attention for an important point
