“I think having land and not ruining it is the most beautiful art that anybody could ever want.” E.W.

Test 1 S.r.l. was founded in 2014 as an innovative start-up. Until 2016 all the resources were used in research and development activities to arrive at the final formulation of the product, in compliance with the quality standards required at global level, and its patent. Parallel to this activity, numerous laboratory tests have been carried out in order to certify the performance of the product. Since the beginning of 2018 the product has been made available on the market only to certain accredited interlocutors in order to guarantee the functionality of the product in real intervention scenarios. Two engineering activities were carried out in order to provide FoamFlex200 with a product system: the first (wringer machinery) finished and tested successfully in real interventions, the second (special vessel) in the prototyping phase. During the growth cycle of the start-up, important milestones were achieved relating to start-up awards and accreditations by institutional and private subjects of global importance.

In conclusion, it can be said that the FoamFlex200 product produced by the company TEST 1 srl is an excellent absorber of hydrocarbons in water with a clear capacity for reuse, which keeps all its conditions of absorption, handling and integrity of the material undisturbed. At least 10 uses. a Absorbent FoamFlex200 also presents a much higher stability in solvent dispersants than the alternative single-use products. He has shown that he can work under these very aggressive conditions for plastics, and performs reuses.

Gathered at the Port of Barcelona with the Society TEST 1 represented by Mr. Giancarlo Ariazzi as Engineering Manager, Dr. Giorgio devitalis as Project Minnger, Alessandro Tani as Marketing Manager, and Anna Truxharte Vera master representative in Cataluna of the company, on behalf of ECOLMARE MERICA SA. (GRUPO RERSER D), Esteve Dresarre, responsive to the contract for the employment of port companies, PORT DE BARCELONA, D. Javier Romo, as technical respondent of the Marine Environment and a representative of Mr. Jord González as technical manager of the Amb, and Urbano service, and I Mr. Jesus Chneros Asuirre Professor of the UNIVERSITY OF LAS PALMAS DE GRAN CANARIA, specializing in marine pollution.

We carried out a test of the capacity of the new FoamFlex200 brand reusable absorbers manufactured by the Italian company TEST 1srl. Prepared a shallow tank, about 10 cm long, and of approximate dimensions of 2 meters long by 1 meter wide, in this tank the following experiments were carried out:

First Experiment: An approximate amount of between 3 and 4 liters of water was poured into this tank. hydrocarbon of light indeterminate composition, of the diesel type, but mixed with other hydrocarbons, also light. Consisted of collecting the total hydrocarbon from the tank by repeated use of the FoamFlex200 absorbent sponge. The sponge was placed on the surface of the tank containing the water and the hydrocarbon and this absorbed visibly almost all the hydrocarbon in the first attempt. The sponge was crushed by a simple roller machine, which caused the sponge to release the tank placed underneath, all the hydrocarbon absorbed. The sponge was reused several times following the same system to collect all the oil spilled that was returned to the original carafe, filling it up to the mark made before the initial spill. After several passes through the roller squeezer the sponge maintained its characteristics intact and its hydrocarbon absorption capacity. The roller squeezing machine has the possibility of varying both the speed and the pressure exerted on each pass, in this way the hydrocarbon collection capacity can be regulated in each pass.

Second Experiment: To test the capacity of resistance against dispersants and hydrocarbon solvents, a similar experiment was carried out, but with a mixture of hydrocarbons with dispersants and solvents.

Under these very aggressive conditions, the sponge supported until the uses of successive collection and squeezing in the roller machine, without losing its shape and qualities. The result was that a mixture of hydrocarbons and solvents was collected in the squeezer tank, so that there was no sign of hydrocarbon in the tank. After the collection of hydrocarbons, the sponge started decomposing as a result of the action of the dispersants and solvents present. A comparison was made with another absorbent product that the port possessed and it decomposed on the first attempt, degrading to the point of not being able to absorb the hydrocarbons.

TEST REPORT PROTECTED BY CONFIDENTIALITY AGREEMENT. THE PRESENT INFORMATION ARE THE ONLY DIFFUSED WITH ENI SPA CONSENT TO THE PRESS.

The performances of P.U.-F.F. were compared with those of polypropylene (PP) usually used as an absorbent product. Has been verified that PP benefits are lower than those of P.U.-F.F. both with regard to absorbing capacities and to those concerning the possibility of reusing the material after pressing in case of diesel and crude oil with 1 cm of oil.

The economic comparison between the innovative material of Test 1 and the technology currently competing with this highlights for the P.U.-F.F. a total cost of use from 3 to 8 times lower than to the absorbents currently on the market. The main advantages of this material compared to the current absorbents are related to its greater absorbency, to the possibility of reusing it by squeezing up to 100 times, recovering the unaltered product therefore to the considerable reduction of the quantity of product to be disposed.

The latter would be at least 10 times lower with, moreover, a spilled product recovery. The simplicity of use and the ability to absorb in a short time large quantities of hydrocarbons make P.U.F.F. a potential first fundamental instrument of environmental protection in case of oil spill.

Intervention on an environmental disaster in the port of fuerteventura through use of FoamFlex200 by the spanish government (pecmar project). The application of new systems in the Canary Islands allows to clean 36.5 of the 40 tons of hydrocarbons collected from Gran Tarajal.

The Minister of Territorial Policy, Sustainability and Security of the Government of the Canary Islands, Nieves Lady Barreto, today highlighted in a press conference the effectiveness of the methods applied in the collection of hydrocarbons in the Gran Tarajal dock thanks to the application of novel systems that are giving a very efficient result and that have been developed by Canarian researchers. In this sense, Jesús Cisneros, professor of Coastal Oceanography and Physical Processes of Marine Pollution at the University of Las Palmas of Gran Canaria, explained that reusable absorbent sponges developed by the ULPGC and an Italian company manufactured with a reusable absorbent material are being used. collects hydrocarbon and that drain through manual mechanisms acquired by the General Directorate of Security and Emergencies.

With this system, 36.5 tons of oils have been collected and the rest, just over three tons, have been collected by traditional suction systems. These sponges or absorbent blankets can be used up to 100 times and are sent to the manufacturer for recycling. "It is the system that has worked best," says Jesús Cisneros, who also reported on the use of a new granulated material, also developed by the ULPGC, to absorb hydrocarbon on soil (platforms, ramps and stones).

"These two systems, which had not been used before, have made it possible to move faster in the cleaning tasks, which is why they have proven their effectiveness these days," the expert said. "At the end of the week, we will also test a system of harmless microorganisms that digest diesel and other hydrocarbons within a period of 24 to 48 hours and that has never before been applied to this scale." Cisneros explained that samples have been taken to determine the exact mix of hydrocarbons in the waters of the pier to prepare the specific microorganism. With it will impregnate the ramps and walls of the dock as test spaces. The microorganisms die as soon as the hydrocarbon from which they are fed disappears.

On the other hand, both Jesus Cisneros and Nieves Lady Barreto insisted that they are working with extreme care in the extraction of machinery to prevent further oil spills. "The important thing is to correctly apply the remediation plan to avoid causing a major environmental problem," said the counselor.

The director of Ports of the Canary Islands, Manuel Ortega, indicated that all the work has been aimed at minimizing the damage and at avoiding risks for the population. "We have been able to withdraw a huge amount of hydrocarbons from the water with maximum efficiency," while stressing that emergency management is minimizing the negative impact on people and the health of the marine environment.

Finally, Nieves Lady Barreto stressed that "together with the traditional methods of cleaning and extraction used on similar occasions until now, we have employed others with Canarian technology that have proven highly effective". In this sense, he considered it necessary to highlight the research work carried out by the Canarian universities that produce these scientific and technological advances.
