Cute work van catches eye

BY CATHY ASPLIN

TC101013DB02A

SALES Manager Justin Haworth moves the Watson Haworth Motors van to the front of the yard (logos, signage etc have since been added to the vehicle).

As far as I’m concerned workvehicles don’t come muchcuter than the recent acqui-

sition by Watson Haworth Motors. So a slightly bemused Sales

Manager (Justin Haworth) was sur-prised when I called in to ask aboutit. The little van has certainly been

attracting lots of attention — withpassing motorists stopping to view itand others asking if it is for sale. But it’s actually a work vehicle —

one that Mr Haworth has been

wanting for some time.‘‘It’s actually quite a rare van.‘‘I initially saw one at a Japanese

car auction in the mid 2000’s andalways thought it would be good toget one as a promotional vehicle toadvertise our business.‘‘Previously we couldn’t import

the older vehicles.‘‘But now, under the new import

legislation introduced in Januarythis year, vehicles like this can bebrought in and complied for use onNew Zealand roads, if they are 20years old or older - with someconditions.‘‘After looking at a few of them in

Japan I found this one at a big carauction in Tokyo.‘‘It is actually a 1990 Subaru

Sambar Van, with 660cc rear engine

and five speed manual.‘‘The look of the van is based on a

1960’s VW Kombi and i t isapproximately half the physical sizeof the original.‘‘It was in good condition, low k’s

and with all the right VW kit etc.‘‘It arrived here in August and

we’ve had the vehicle compliedthrough VTNZ, painted in WatsonHaworth Motors colours and havebeen replacing worn out bits andpieces.‘‘There’s still a bit of work to go on

it, but we’re pleased with how it’scome up.‘‘We can get more of them if there

is a demand for these retro vans, aswell as any other type of vehicle thecustomer requires through our newdirect importation service.’’

Make Trax for your Holden dealership

BY DEAN TAYLOR

As I’ve said before, it is alwaysa privilege to drive an all newvehicle from one of the major

manufacturers.Driving the Holden Trax was

even more of a privilege as it wasn’teven released when I got behind thewheel. The team from Holden New

Zealand had brought the vehicle tothe opening of Rosetown Holden’snew facility — and agreed to leaveit behind so I could test it forDriveBy.The Trax is the company’s new

development aimed at buyers whowant the versatility and styling ofan SUV and value of a small car.Straight away it looks like a

Holden — but not one we’ve seenbefore. It is a striking design with wheel

arches that make it look muscular. The Trax is also jam packed with

technology, such as Holden’sMyLink — and Bluetooth, rear viewcamera and rear park assist, auto-matic headlight... and more.Holden uses clever design to

provide an array of interior storageoptions, plus the versatility of folddown seating and extra storagebins. It is powered by a 1.8 litre petrol

engine that gives 108kW of powerand 175Nm of torque, deliveredthrough a six speed automaticgearbox. While it is an SUV, it has a

slippery design, so it drives welland has ample pulling power. The torque is available through a

wide range so the delivery of poweris effortless.

At the same time the Traxdel ivers economy figures of7.6l/100km.

Holden has worked on thechassis and suspension to create amodel tuned to suit New Zealand

conditions. My drive revealed a well bal-

anced car, nimble and fun — but

with obvious benefits in terms ofspace and versatility. The interior was great — classy

seating and controls and an array offeatures that are fairly intuitive, despite being hi-tech.Rear view camera technology is

becoming more standard thesedays — and for good reason withmodern designs. It isn’t easy to see rearwards,

but the camera technology andgood sized screen gives confid-ence.It is coupled with park assist

with audible warnings.Other technology built into the

screen includes normal music andradio options, as well as an array ofpopular streaming music apps andcompatibility with a range of digitaldevices. The Bluetooth function even

allows music to be streamed from aSmartphone. Two excellent features are hill

start assist and descent control. The first prevents roll-back when

doing a hill start, the second keepsthe car from speeding away down-hill.Holden is expecting great things

with Trax — and there is no reasonnot to doubt that optimism.

Antiques Roadshow ideal place f

TC101013DB04C

COOL AS ‘55 Buick Riviera advertised ‘Vintage and Classic Cars’ within.

BY DEAN TAYLOR

It was the Vintage and Classic CarShow that attracted me to the firstof Paeroa’s two Antique Weekends

— but this event, now in its seventhyear, has something for everyone.

It opened on Friday the 13th (ofSeptember) with a double featuresilent movie screening. The event I attended was the

Vintage and Classic Car Show thenext day, which opened with aparade through town from 11amending up in Wharf Street. It was freefor parade vehicles and the publicmade a gold coin donation to comeand have a close look.

About 80 cars took part in theparade, which was managed withoutroad closure with one simple instruc-tion — don’t let any new cars into theconvoy. This year there were displays and

demonstrations from the World WarII Re-enactment Society — includingmock battles and static displaysincluding WWII paraphernalia, mili-tary vehicles, a flag raising ceremonyand fire power demonstration.Live music, Devonshire Teas, the

Paeroa Rotary BBQ provided refresh-ment and entertainment, plus therewas face painting and a visit fromHarold the Giraffe of The Life Educa-tion Trust for the kids. Some vehicles left for the Mystery

Car Rally at about 1.30pm — otherscruised home or out for lunch. The next weekend again opened

with silent movies at Paeroa LittleTheatre on Friday night and over theweekend the Antique and CollectorsRoadshow, with five registeredvaluers whose wisdom and experi-ence is second to none — betweenthem they have c locked upapproximately 150 years experiencein antiques and collectibles. There were also antique stalls.Proceeds from the Antiques

Roadshow Weekend were donated toSt John Ambulance. It occurred to me following the

event that the notion of ‘classic’ interms of vehicles is often in the eyeof the beholder — but when it comesto disastrous makes and modelsthere is a fair bit of agreement. With that in mind I suggested to

the organisers they are in the uniqueposition of being able to host a showof such cars, entitled Lemons inPaeora.I mention it here so when it is

announced you know it was mybrainwave.

Kiwi SUV love affair real says MTA

TC101013DB06A

TOYOTA Hilux - great on the road — andwhen the road runs out.

NewZealandmotorists’ shift from regular carsto sport utility vehicles (SUVs) is welldocumented — but the accompanying

growth in the popularity of utility vehicles is lesswell known the Motor Trade Association has found. For the year to date, three of New Zealand’s

best selling model lines (Toyota Hilux, Ford Rangerand Nissan Navara) are utility vehicles. While every bit as practical, almost as well

appointed, and with a muscular attractiveness thatcompetes with the soft-roader appeal of mostSUV’s, utilities are helping redefine the vehiclemarketplace.Between 2007 and August 2013, 4x4 utility

vehicle sales volumes have increased by 38percent; the only segment to increase volumesfaster has been SUVs — which are up by 64percent. At the same time, 4x2 utilities haveincreased volumes by 23 percent — the thirdfastest growing segment. In the same way thatNew Zealand’s shift towards SUVsmirrors overseas

experience, so too does the move to utility vehicles, which have proven especially popular in the UnitedStates. With current average monthly sales now

running at 1739 vehicles, utilities are the largestnew vehicle segment behind SUVs (2499), and arefollowed by small (1673) and light (,248) vehicles.Long the mainstay of the rural sector, utility

vehicles are increasingly the choice of drivers inmore urban settings. While still popular withfarmers, trades people are more and more likely tochoose a utility vehicle for its range of advantages.Current utility vehicles are more likely to have anautomatic transmission, are more often than notfitted with 4x4 drive-trains, have as many safetyfeatures as a car and be very comfortable androomy to ride in. They have other practicaladvantages as well, boasting tremendous towingcapability, good levels of fuel economy and equallyimportantly, they retain high residual values.‘‘Today’s utility provides a very sensible

alternative for many buyers,’’ says MTAspokesperson Ian Stronach.‘‘Trades people and families are recognising the

versatility they provide; they don’t have to give upcomfort and refinement for the many practicaladvantages a utility provides.‘‘The higher specification utilities available on

the market usually have features that not long agowere the preserve of the luxury segment.’’As with SUV’s, buyers of utilities enjoy the

perception of safety that comes with the high rideheight. With a deck liner and canopy fittedhowever, a utility can carry loads that mightotherwise damage the interior of most SUV’s— therun to the tip, or moving heavy, dirty, objects.Modern features like touch-screen controls,

Bluetooth connectivity, premium grade cloth andcarpets make the interiors hard to distinguish fromthose of a traditional passenger car. And, probably more so than in any other

segment, utility vehicle owners take the opportun-ity to personalise their vehicles with accessoriesranging from practical additions such as canopies, driving lights, racking systems and tonneau covers, through to more decorative items like aftermarketwheels and tyres, sports-bars, step boards andwheel arch flares; no two utilities look quite thesame.

New AA app

Stranded motor-ists are just aclick away from

assistance with thelatest release of theAA Roadservicemobi le app onGoogle’s Play Store. The AA has

released the GoogleAndroid version of theappl icat ion thatenables members tocall for roadsideassistance, identifytheir location usingGPS and find helpfulservice nearby includ-ing petrol stations andvehicle repairers.More than 10,000 AA members have

downloaded the iPhone AA Roadservice app, which is also available on the Windows 8platform.AA Roadservice national manager John

Healy says adding the Android platform to themix was a no-brainer in order to maximise theavailability of the app.‘‘Our app enables us to deliver a fast and

efficient service directly to where the member isand it’s proving to be popular,’’ Mr Healy says.Of the members who downloaded the iPhone

app, hundreds have used it to request AARoadservice assistance.Mr Healy says that, while AA members can

always call *222 for assistance, there are alsobenefits to using the app.‘‘While it is automated, members will still

receive an acknowledgement their request hasbeen received and despatched as well asconfirming their location.‘‘Along with that, anyone who uses the app,

including non-AA members can access otherfeatures to locate fuel and mechanics.‘‘There is also a torch which is one of the

features members have used a lot.’’Mr Healy says the app’s availability on

Android, iPhone and Windows ensures accessfor a wide range of AA members.93

Stragglers car show for charityO

ne of the friendliest and most relaxed car events returnsnext month — the Stragglers Rod and Kustom Club’sannual Charity Car Display and Family Fun Day at Lake

Te Koutu Domain in Cambridge. The event takes place this year on Sunday, November 24

and is open to any custom, classic and vintage cars. The car show was first held in 2006 and attracted 175 cars.It has grown each year and now hosts around 800 cars

from every era — with predominantly English, Australian andAmerican cars coming from as far away as Auckland, NewPlymouth and the Hawkes Bay.Organisers say the idea of the day is for enthusiasts to

park their cars in the lovely surroundings of the lake domain, have a picnic, listen to the music, let the kids play on theamusement rides and soak up the atmosphere. The over-riding purpose of the day, however, is to raise money forcharity.Money is raised through a percentage of profits from each

of the food vendors and a gold coin donation from the public,as well as donations from participating vehicles.Over the nine years the event has been run, the club has

donated more than $90,000 to various worthwhile causes. The charity to benefit this year hasn’t yet been chosen, so

Waipa groups who cater for children and struggle to findfunding elsewhere should make themselves known toorganisers.Cars begin arriving at the domain from around 6.30am and

it’s always a juggling act to fit them all in, so if you’reconsidering taking part arrive early!Public viewing times are between 10am and 3pm. For more

MTA confirms sale of Vehicle Testing shareholdingF

ollowing a special general meeting ofmembers held in Wellington, Motor TradeAssociation (MTA) confirmed that it will

be selling 60% of its shareholding in VehicleTesting New Zealand (VTNZ) to internationaltesting, inspection and certification specialistDEKRA SE, subject to the approval of theOverseas Investment Office (OIO).MTA is currently the sole shareholder of

VTNZ.The sale was discussed by MTA members at

this special general meeting with the MTABoard seeking their support before proceeding

with this sale.Members also had the opportunity to

discuss the sale at a series of road-shows heldacross the country earlier in September.Under the sale agreement, there is pro-

vision for considering the sale of the remaining40% of shares at the end of 2016, at the optionof either party.MTA President David Storey says “We are

pleased that we have been able to proceed withthe sale. We have always maintained that it willprovide a range of meaningful benefits for allthe parties involved, and it has been hearten-

ing to see that members recognised this.‘‘Partnering with DEKRA opens up new

possibilities for us outside of the automotivesector and that will not include the repair andservicing of vehicles; DEKRA don’t have anoffering in that space and don’t plan to. The netresult of this sale though will be a strengthen-ing of MTA’s capabilities and improved longterm outlook.”Clemens Klinke, board member of DEKRA SE

and Head of Business Unit DEKRA Automotive, says “The approval of this sale is a very positiveoutcome. In recent times we have been

concentrating on client-centred structures andprocesses as a means of improving our overallperformance. VTNZ are an appropriate fit forthat model.‘‘They are a well respected and recognised

brand with strong management and a verycapable, customer-centric workforce. I am veryconfident that by making best use of eachother’s strengths and expertise, we will quicklydevelop an organisation of the highest calibre.”The formal transfer of shares from MTA to

DEKRA will take place as soon as is possible, subject to the approval of the OIO.

with an enthusiast inWellington, got a ridedown on an NZ Posttruck and drove herhome. The International

has been in service allover New Zealand, butis in great nick so MrKane hasn’t had to doanything mechanical. He is in the process

of stripping out thefirefighting pumps tomake room for seats, sohe can take people onevents and gives kidsrides.Smaller pumps and

hoses will be fitted so

people can still enjoy playing firefighter — orjust squirt their mates for a laugh. As well as taking part in the organised

Variety Bash events, the Kanes want to domore in their own community and plan tohave their engine out and about for events, such as the Christmas Parade, fairs and galasand fundraisers.Mr Kane says part of making that work is

getting some sponsorship — big or small —to support their efforts.

He prefers the idea of a number ofsponsors, so the burden is shared, morepeople are part of the fun and so he canplaster the Fire Engine with logos and signsand get the names out there.Sponsorship is welcomed in the form of

money, goods, services, fuel, signage —anything that helps. If you want to be part of Team Jolly

MouthwateringL15 Citroen

BY DEAN TAYLOR

Wepetrolheads can be a fickle lot—tut tutting someone’s pride and joyif we don’t like or understand what

they have done.I saw it with my son’s Escort, when he

very tastefully installed a twin cam Toyotaengine. Me — I like it when people areclever and make something they like andlike to drive. At Paeroa this 1951 Light 15 Citroen took

my eye. It was pristine and looked greatwhen it drove in.I asked the owner about taking the

interior shot, and as I’ve driven a couple ofthese, asked him how it went.Good with the new engine and gearbox

he says. Under the bonnet is a DS engineand four speed, which gives it more legs. He’s also cleverly added power steering

adapted from a Pontiac LeMans (good toknow they have some use) and it rides onwider rims and tyres. And to prove his point he had no trouble

sticking right upmy bum in the gorge whenwe went out for lunch.
