PROGRESS DURING CHALLENGING TIMES

As is all too obvious, our economy both locally and nationally continues to require that we all remain fi scally vigilant. As a county, this means that we must continue cost savings but also take advantage of certain opportunities that this fi nancial climate presents.

As many of you may know, the county reduced spending for 2010 by about $1.3 million over 2009. The 2009 budget was a decrease over 2008 spending. There were no salary raises given to any county employees in 2010. In addition, there were 11 positions vacated by county employees in 2009 that were not funded for 2010. The county has also saved substantial amounts by revisiting things such as insurance coverages. We no longer pay to board out county prisoners and are actually housing approximately two dozen state inmates at our new

correctional facility, resulting in cash payments to the county from the state. Our employees and department heads remain committed to cost savings as demonstrated by their support of last year’s initiative to reduce costs of offi ce supplies by 10% in each offi ce.

Even in these lean times, it is important to tend to those vital functions that counties provide to their citizens. One example of this is our county Public Safety Building, currently under construction on county property near the Recycling Center. This building will house our county 911 Center and our Emergency Management offi ces. Relocation of these two offi ces from their present fl ood-prone location became a real priority after the 2006 fl ood events. This important project is partially funded by a $1,000,000 gambling grant from the state with most of the construction balance coming from a

previous bond issue. The lowest bid for this project was about $1,000,000 lower than anticipated, which is a commentary on the economy of the building trades, but also provides an opportunity to complete this project at a much lower cost than originally hoped. Money for equipment in the 911 Center is available through an existing account funded by wireless fees and other fees paid by telephone users on their monthly bills.

By reducing expenses and availing ourselves of grant and other opportunities, we can balance the needs of the public against our commitment to our taxpayers. Our goal is to provide all of our mandated services in a cost effective and effi cient way, meeting the needs of our many consumers while protecting the taxpayer as much as we can. Wendell Kay Wayne County Commissioner

“Viva Las Vegas Casino Night” proved to be a lively and entertaining evening with Elvis’ Lost Brother at the center of the action. As people mingled and socialized about the casino, Elvis had Jonathan Fritz, Honesdale Mayor and Ray Harrington, owner of R3 Hardware kicking up their heels on the dance fl oor.

After a night of money switching hands between the dealers and play-ers at the poker, blackjack and roulette tables Jeanette Abbott was the top money holder. She received the grand prize of a $500 gift certifi cate valid

for any Chamber Member business. Beverly Daily was the 2nd grand prize winner of a $250 gift certifi cate valid for any chamber member.

Additional top money winners were 3rd Prize to Steve Unis for a one night stay at Woodloch Pines, 4th prize to Joanne Hohman for a deluxe king room at the Sayre Mansion, and 5th prize to Jeannette Davis for leisure king room at Comfort Inn & gift certifi cate to Kay’s Italian Restaurant.

The night could not have been a success without the support of our many event sponsors and silent auction

donors. The Chamber truly appreci-ates the generosity the membership continues to show so we may promote Wayne County and its businesses.
