Reservations for private and charter jets looking to land at the three closest airports to MetLife Stadium—Teterboro, Morristown Municipal and Newark Liberty—usually aren't required. But like previous Super Bowls, the Federal Aviation Administration has mandated that area airports create a reservation system for the days before and after the game to ease congestion on the runways and in the air, according to airport operators in the region. In addition to the regularly scheduled commercial and cargo flights, the FAA said it is expecting about 1,200 general aviation aircraft to descend into all New York area airports for Super Bowl weekend. Reservations will be required to use the airports as early as Jan. 28 before the Feb. 2 game and as late as Feb. 4. To handle the anticipated surge in business at Newark Liberty in particular, Signature Flight Support, a fixedbase operator that services private aircraft at the airport, opened a new $11 million terminal last month. "We had started to talk about doing something to revamp our old facility, but once it was announced that the Super Bowl was coming to New Jersey, we knew we had to put our foot forward and redo the entire terminal," said Eric Richardson, Signature's general manager. Because of the game, activity at the new 11,200squarefoot terminal will likely see triple what Signature normally handles at Newark Liberty. Mr. Richardson said he expects a jump in reservations at Newark Liberty after slots at the company's Teterboro terminal, which has already received over 125 reservations, fills up. Jet Aviation, a fixedbase operator at Teterboro, is bracing for 150 to 200 arrivals and departures on game day, double the amount of usual traffic. It has logged more than 200 reservations overall, according to the company. Capt. "Parking the aircraft is always an issue," hesaid, noting that elite travelers often wanttheir planes to be immediately available foruse.

That said, those parking their jets atTeterboro, which has an estimated 600spots, will have to wait at least an hour afterthe game is over to fly out in accordancewith the FAA's temporary flight restriction.Game attendees who want to leave early ontheir jets, say at halftime, must use airportsoutside an 8mile radius from the stadium inEast Rutherford, N.J.

Departure delays from weather or othercauses are irritants for privatejet travelers, most whom are accustomed to hasslefreetravel, said Jordan Hansell, chief executiveof NetJets Inc., which sells fractional

shares in private jets.

"Ease of access and predictability is what our travelers desire, especially at big eventslike the Super Bowl," said Mr. Hansell, whose company logged about 240 flights in and outof New Orleans for the last Super Bowl.

Darren Large, facilities and projects manager at Morristown Municipal Airport, said he anda former employee were in New Orleans to watch operations at Lakefront Airport, whichsaw the bulk of the private jet traffic for that game.

"The two of us worked the entire weekend and saw everything there is to see," Mr. Largesaid, adding that the airport also used this past Thanksgiving—usually the airport's biggestday—as a trial run for the big game.

"We learned that we need to park the planes a bit neater and many limo drivers neededmore help" from the staff of the fixedbase operators than was expected, Mr. Large said,so the operators were asked to increase their manpower inside the terminal.

Those jets that don't have reservations at nearby airports will be diverted to fields as faraway as Trenton and White Plains.

"We'll be a smaller piece of the Super Bowl, but we're expecting a flood of latereservations as the airports closer to the stadiums fill up their slots," said Peter Scherrer, airport manager at Westchester County Airport.
