Making a Programmed Instructional Material (PIM)

A lot of material is available on internet regarding programmed instructional

material. But when we search for any sample of such material we are left empty

handed. I would like to share the output of my initial attempt in this direction and

to create a template for making programmed instructional material for my B.Ed.

students. Some of them have created a marvelous programmed learning material

using this template which will also be shared

I have used Power-Point presentation using a few tricks to present a set of information “Content” and then presents a few questions to the learner. The question frame is having multiple choice questions having four answers, out of which 3 are wrong answers and only one is correct. The wrong answers are linked to the “Wrong answer page” which provides feedback about the answer or a hint to answer the question correctly. A child cannot move to the next question unless he/she doesn't answer the question correctly. Whereas, a correct answer to a question leads the learner to the next question and so on. At the end the learner may be provided with a score. In this presentation I will be sharing how I developed this template and how to use it. I request you all to drop me a feedback about my work and feedback to improve it.

Selecting the wrong answer will lead to “wrong answer page”. The each “wrong answer page” will be linked to

relevant “Hint Page” which will provide some sort of remedial instruction. Both the “wrong answer page” and

“Hint Page” are linked to respective “Question page ”. Whereas, if the learner selects the right answer in the first go

he/she will be moved to “correct answer page”. The “correct answer page” will immediately provide positive

reinforcement to the learner, and will take the learner to the next question page. This transition to next page can be

time delayed automatically or can be mouse click based.

A sample of such PIM is presented in following slides…

Objectives of PIM

At the end of this module you will be able to-1. recall the concept of Root System.2. explain the characters of roots 3. interpret the functions of roots

Let’s start module

Topic: The Root System

The root and its branches make up the root system of a plant. A typical toot consists of primary roots, secondary roots, tertiary toots, toot caps

and root hairs. The primary roots gets divided into branches which are known as secondary

roots. The branches of secondary roots are called tertiary roots. The tip of each toot is protected by a root cap. Every toot has a cluster of very

fine thread like root hairs for absorbing water and minerals salts from the soil. The main function of a root are fixation, absorption, transportation and

prevention.Let’s answer some questions

Q1: Which part of the seed grows into roots?

- Stem

- Plumule

- Leaves

- Radicle

A few things which I have done and reasons I have used buttons to select an answer instead of hyper linking

the text. If text is hyper linked and used the colour of the text will change when you visit the page again, therefore I have used buttons for selection a response.

All the “wrong answers” are linked to same “wrong answer page” and the same hint page also.

The animation in the last slide has been taken from http://giphy.com/

How to hyper link buttons1. Insert a simple circle/oval or any other shape you like. I have

used circle.

2. Format it to look like a 3D object

3. Change colour as you want

4. Select the circle not the text in the circle right click hyperlink place in this document select the slide you want to hyper link it to OK and Voila!

Developing programmed instructional material:

Steps: Select any topic Prepare content analysis of the topic i.e. teaching elements Prepare behavioural objectives of the topic Write content appropriately as to provide self learning experience

to the learner Prepare at least 5 MCQ with four answers each, out of which only

one is correct and 3 are wrong answers

Prepare a wrong answer page, correct answer page etc. Prepare text for hint to be provided for wrong answer Insert text of question, answers and hints prepared in the template

given at appropriate place in frames/ slides Ensure proper hyper link of answers, frames (slides) etc. Provide total score in last frame/ slide attained by the learner in

the programmed instructional material

Use design template provided in Microsoft Power Point for modifying the template given

Do not use too much variation in text size, font type, graphics in the programmed instructional material

You may change colour of template as desired You are free to innovate with the text presentation and use of

animation, videos etc. for instructions in the programmed instructional material

Your suggestions and observations are welcome!
