“Making it Better Together” PARTY!

Greetings from ASDA!We hope you will plan to join us for “Making it Better...Together” on March 9-10! Once again, the ASDA Annual Scientific Session is earlier than normal, but this year it does not conflict with Spring Break or another dental district meeting! The entire event will occur at the Marriott Hotel in Little Rock in a compact, easy-to-access venue. Dr. Mark Hyman, a wildly popular speaker at ADA confer-ences, will help us launch the meeting with “Top Game Changers for 2018” for the entire dental team. Also, our own Dr. Don Callan will discuss “Bone Grafting & Tissue Regeneration Applications” on Saturday, along with Dr. Jeremy Horst on the use and application of Silver Diamine Fluoride. Again this year, Friday night at Deep

Ultra Lounge, inside Willy D’s. ASDA is very pleased again to partner with the Arkansas Dental Hygienists’ Association (ADHA) to host concurrent sessions this year. We’ll see you there.

Dr. David Vammen, ASDA President

Course Synopses

Medical Models of Caries for the Modern Dental Practice: Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) and More Presenter: Dr. Jeremy Horst Saturday, March 108:00AM - 9:45AM2 CDE Hours

Suddenly we find ourselves in a new paradigm of den-tistry: medical management of caries. Non-operative approaches have resurged around Silver Diamine Fluo-ride (SDF). Many clinical trials and safety studies have been completed, and FDA clearance of SDF in 2014 has spawned support from nearly all major dental groups. These changes have brought about new opportunities, and new challenges. While SDF and complimentary techniques are faster and less invasive, monitoring out-comes is fundamentally different than for restorations. In this session, we will focus on the evidence and clinical use of SDF in caries treatment. We will cover: clinical trials and mechanistic studies, integration of SDF with other caries management techniques (such as glass ionomer sealants, ART, and Hall), incorporation into restorative practice, clinical protocols, and monitoring for response. Clinicians need to be prepared to approach the black staining, the 11-32% of carious lesions that will keep growing, and to prepare patients to receive these treatments. Lessons from recent adoption in medical management of caries can guide clinicians to dramatically reduce the burden of caries in any population.

Jeremy Horst DDS, PhD practices biochemistry and pediatric dentistry at UC San Francisco. His mission is to drive devel-opments in non-invasive dentistry to decrease suffering from tooth decay. He holds a fellowship in the DeRisi lab at UC San Francisco, where he uses cutting edge microbiome and imaging technologies to study the mechanisms of success and failure for the treatment of caries with Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF). Clinically he focuses on maximally effective, minimally invasive techniques to stop dental caries and create an easy relationship to dentistry for children and people with special healthcare needs.
