Making Art with Textiles Workshop

Venue: Millrose Quilting and Gallery Dates: The 2nd Thursday of every month Times: 10.00 am – 4.00 pm Web: Go to https://www.millrosequiltingandgallery.com/for details Experience: Suits all levels of skill and knowledge In the ‘Making Art with Textiles’ Workshop participants are artists for the day and will be facilitated to develop skills to design and compose a naive, abstract or figurative artwork using textiles. Subjects for the artwork will very individual and of personal choice however themes can include;

- A still life - A land/sea/city/scape - An architectural building/s - Facial or bodyline/s (animal or human)

Participants will be guided to work with their creative intuition and assisted to make decisions to

• construct a layered and textured background • explore raw edge applique techniques • deconstruct printed fabrics and re purpose unwanted linen and bric-a-brac • draw with a sewing machine (free motion machine drawing) • explore naïve stitching techniques. • print onto fabric using a simple office inkjet printer

It’s a fun and explorative workshop; most students find the process inspiring and liberating and will have a finished product at the end of Day 2. Finished Size - Variable In this workshop you will produce a piece of textile art that can be variable in size and used/displayed in a variety of ways. For example, if your artwork(s) is smaller in size you may use it as a gift card/s or mini canvas. If you choose to complete a larger piece of work it would be very suitable for framing. You can also apply your work to soft furnishings such as wall hangings, quilt medallions, pillow/cushion covers, upholstered chairs, lampshades etc. or to fashion accessories such as a shopping bag/tote.

Requirements

Materials:

The beauty of making art with textiles is you can use what is available to you. Fabrics of any kind and a basic sewing kit are adequate to produce a creative piece of artwork.

Inspiration:

Please come to class with an idea or two e.g. photos, online images, magazine pictures to use as inspiration. This important step saves time and helps you progress your work at the outset.

Embroidery Threads Sewing machine threads, DMC Cotton Perle, wool, linen, silk and even some string/fibres for added texture

Fabric Glue Water soluble fabric glue e.g. Roxanne Basting Glue

Marking Tools Fabric pen or pencil

Scissors Fabric

General purpose

Embroidery scissors (must be sharp at the point)

Embroidery needles Your preferred needles

Pins Short applique pins

Machine threads Polyester threads suitable form your machine.

Essential – Black or charcoal grey

Optional – Coloured threads

Thread spool support

Optional – an external (not attached to machine) thread spool holder

Sewing Machine Your preferred sewing machine

Please have your machines cleaned and ready to go. Bring your instruction Manuals please.

Have the darning foot in place, feed dog down and a top stitch needle in position.

Machine needles Top Stitch needles are preferred, alternatively jeans/denim needles will suffice

Darning Foot Most machines come with a darning foot, if not please purchase one for this class as it is essential for free motion drawing.

Substrate 1 x metre of calico

Printed fabrics Any fabrics can be used

Plain fabrics Neutral fabrics to compose a background (Linen/s , plain seed-sack, course weave fabrics for texture)

Bric-A-Brac and treasures

Optional –

Old pieces of linen/fabric, doilies, a handkerchief, tea towel, tablecloth, treasured clothing items.

Special trinkets, jewellery, buttons

Old cards, written memorabilia, maps

Pre marked fabrics Optional - Rusted, block printed, painted

Fusible Webbing Optional – Iron on fusible webbing
