Transcript of Making appraisals useful
MAKING YOUR end of year
APPRAISAL
365 times more USEFUL
I’ve never met anyone who finds end of year
appraisals useful. HR departments and
consultants design great methods,
Managers execute the process diligently
and every employee wants to do well - so
why aren’t they useful?
I once met a lady who wanted to win an
Olympic gold medal. She had a plan, a
coach that had previously coached athletes
to win gold but she was only the150th in the
world. How did she go on to win multiple
gold medals? One planned, measured,
analysed step per day.
Step 1.
Set your big goal, a dream you desperately want.
Turn Step 1 into success
Slice your dream into daily sized chunks.
Improve one piece of your performance today.
Measure the improvement.
Analyse.
Create next target.
Get inspired.

goals
Making daily sized chunks
A. Decompose the big goal into parts that make
sense to you.
B. Decompose those parts into smaller pieces
C. If necessary take those pieces and break them
apart further until you’re at the point of a task
you complete in a day
High level goal An example component part
Develop commercial awareness
Build the financial model for worldwide sales of Product Y
Demonstrate leadership capability
Publish agenda before meeting and keep it to time
Improve effectiveness in the new matrix team structure
Build a partitioned task list to effectively manage time
Decomposing goals to usable component parts
Example of creating the daily sized chunks
Big Goal: Get promoted to VP of product
A. Parts include : External profile, Profile with
Board, Building my team, Refining the products,
Managing customers, etc.
B. Pieces of “Profile with board” include: Chairing
my meetings more effectively, Participating in
exec meetings more effectively, etc
C. Task in a day: “Chairing meetings more
effectively” include: Prepare and distribute
agenda including timings and planned
outcomes. Prepare clear and concise
presentation material. Facilitate timings etc.
Check your progress at the
end of the week, month
and year.
Every working day you can
take a step to your Gold
Medal!
