From the President of Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation

Thanks to you, we can offer care and comfort

A few words… Relationships make for successAt Mount Sinai, our patients are known by their names, not by identification numbers on their charts. Hospital staff members are compassionate and committed to providing the best care possible. These experiences build confidence and trust. Yes, trust in the caregivers that are healing you, but also confidence in knowing that your donation will be put to good use. Because we are small, only 107 beds, your gifts make a huge impact on the quality of care we are able to provide to our patients. The impact of your donations is felt immediately. I am delighted to say that in 2013 we received more donations than ever before. Your gifts, small and large, allowed us to provide the hospital with more than $900,000 to fund programs like Magic Moments, Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation, the Asthma Management Centre, Palliative Long Term Care, and Palliative Home Care; to purchase much needed equipment; and to provide the special extras that create a homelike environment for our patients and their families. This year we paid tribute to a special doctor, Rubin Becker, who goes above and beyond in providing care to his patients. In recognition of his contribution to Mount Sinai and its patients, more than $700,000 was pledged towards our goal of $1 million, which we expect to complete in 2014. The funds will be used to create the Rubin Becker Endowment Fund. Annual proceeds from the fund will support the programs that make Mount Sinai special. Thank you for your generosity and for placing your confidence in us. As we look to the future we know that superior health care will continue to depend on the generosity of private donors, corporations and foundations. We look forward to our continued partnerships both old and new as Mount Sinai continues to respond to the ever-growing needs of our community.

Yours very truly,

Eric Maldoff, C.M.President,Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation

Please accept my heartfelt thanks, on behalf of the staff, the patients and their families, for your generosity.

Mount Sinai Hospital plays a vital role in our community. Our patients are your neighbours. Some might be your relatives and friends. All are receiving the best possible care, and it is on their behalf that I express my appreciation to you and all our donors for your wonderful support.

Today, your help is more important than ever, because the need is growing. Our population includes more and more men and women who face ongoing respiratory problems, cancers, and other chronic conditions, even during their prime years. I’m sure you agree that each one of them deserves the highest quality of life!

Your generous support, as described in this year’s report to our donors, enables Mount Sinai to offer an unequalled range of services. In the pages that follow, you can read about some very special events and some remarkable gifts—gifts that will have long lasting impact. The result will be felt every day by individuals who need respiratory care, long-term care, and palliative care either in the hospital or in their own homes. Without your help, the variety and extent of these services could not exist.

Fortunately, and with your help, Mount Sinai is here in our community to provide personalized care in a human and safe environment. Our excellent physicians and healthcare professionals are on the cutting edge of their specialties.

Your participation strengthens our dedication to do our best, and the resources you provide inspire us all to do even more. We are deeply grateful.

Yours very truly,

Robert Zittrer, MBA, FCA President,Mount Sinai Hospital Centre

Art connects us to ourselves

Making a Profound ImpactOn November 6, 2013, Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation and the Art for Healing Foundation co-hosted a vernissage to celebrate the opening of a new art collection permanently located on the fourth floor of the hospital. Our long term patients, their families and our staff are now enjoying these 37 exquisite paintings and photographs donated by or for the artists. The collection of bright, cheerful works—including images of a swimming pool and flowers—was curated, framed and installed by the Art for Healing Foundation. Since 2002 the Art For Healing Foundation has brought the healing power of art to hospitals and wellness facilities, transforming public and patient areas into inspiring environments that encourage a sense of serenity and hope for patients, their families and healthcare providers. Since 2002, they have installed more than 6,000 works of art in 42 institutions in Quebec. From its earliest days in Ste Agathe, our hospital has understood the importance of visual beauty as an essential part of the healthful environment—now referred to as the milieu de vie. Art for Healing provided new works—selected with the help of staff and family representatives—as part of a makeover of the fourth floor that also included new wall panelling and curtains. These changes delight every resident and visiting family member; our medical and support staff, too, are thrilled to work in such an uplifting setting. We are deeply thankful to Earl Pinchuk and Gary Blair, co-founders of the Art For Healing Foundation, to Rita Briansky, Tex Dawson, Bernard Rajotte, Anita Ein Shapiro, who donated their own art works, to Douglas Beder who donated work by his father Jack Beder, and to Peter Krausz who gave work by his father Tibor K. Thomas.

Our Newest Resident; To The Summit And BeyondSensational Art Installation

He comes into view as you round the corner of Cavendish and Heywood. Majestic, strong and impressive, he exudes the highest of standards. This monumental sculpture, over three metres in height, is appropriately named “To the Summit and Beyond – Atteindre le Sommet et Toujours Progresser” was donated recently to the Mount Sinai Hospital by Dr. Harry Rosen. Mount Sinai is grateful to have been selected as a recipient and is in distinguished company as one of seven public institutions that have been gifted one of his works of art. Dr. Rosen, a dentist by profession, has always used his hands to heal. His love of sculpting grew from his passion for helping people. He parlayed his magic touch into extraordinary creations of art and discovered an ability to make the world a more beautiful place. In expressing himself through his art, Dr. Rosen is able to connect with people, just as he connected with his patients. The Sculpture is a metaphor for Mount Sinai’s mission of excellence. “My sculpture symbolizes the hospital’s pursuit of excellence in patient care. Just as Mount Sinai endeavours to excel in the delivery of care through its three vocations, so does the mountain climber. He has reached the top of Mount Sinai, yet his hand is reaching past, as he strives to go higher.”

Annual Fund: Governors’ Circle GiftsThe impact of your gift

In addition to having an immediate and meaningful effect on the success of the services and programs Mount Sinai is able to offer, leadership gifts provide us with the flexibility to quickly respond to the hospital’s ongoing commitment to provide quality care to patients and their families. Here are just a few examples of what annual gifts do:

• $250 provides one day of music therapy for a group of respiratory patients.

• $500 pays for thirteen hours of art therapy for a palliative care patient.

• $1000 allows one patient to continue their rehabilitation in our Out-patient Pulmonary Rehabilitation follow-up program.

• $3000 covers the cost of care for one palliative patient for one month.

Corporate Social Responsibility

Leadership sets the tone

Endowments: A Gift for the Future

Thirty Years of Devotion, Honouring Dr. Rubin Becker

Harrison Cutler, the founder of Delmar, always thought it was important to “give something somewhere, even when there isn’t a lot to give.” He entrenched this attitude in his company from the start and taught his thinking to his children. His son Robert, President and CEO of Delmar International Inc., now a major freight forwarding and global logistics firm, proudly carries the family tradition forward today.

“Helping others” is the title of a main page on the corporate website. It describes Delmar’s commitment to give back to the community it serves. In addition to supporting many organizations locally, nationally and abroad, Delmar’s employee engagement program encourages staff to get involved in charitable initiatives that speak to them. Volunteering time is part of the corporate culture, and the company encourages employees to raise money for causes they feel personally connected to by matching their personal gifts with a corporate donation. The program fosters employee satisfaction and expands the Delmar brand of corporate social responsibility. Robert Cutler explains: “It’s a lot of work to be involved. The easy route would be to not spend the time and money, but I don’t like the easy route. Our instinct is to help, to get involved—not to look the other way.”

Delmar’s longstanding involvement with Mount Sinai’s Respiratory Programs has assisted countless patients to benefit from comprehensive care. The impact of this generous corporate contribution upon their lives is real —and very significant.

In 2013 the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, together with the Becker family led by Marsha Becker and her son, Brian Becker, spearheaded an endowment campaign with a stated goal of $1 million to honour Dr. Rubin Becker for his outstanding career and dedicated service. Dr. Becker is known throughout the community and beyond for his wisdom, knowledge, and ability to connect with his patients. An internist with special expertise in geriatric medicine, he has been at Mount Sinai since 1985. He is currently Mount Sinai’s Director of Professional Services. He also serves as Division of Chief of Internal Medicine at the Montreal Jewish General Hospital and is Associate Professor of Medicine at McGill University. Respected as an authority by colleagues, he has mentored a whole generation of younger physicians and is still sought after in this capacity. His patients simply love him. Many individuals describe Dr. Becker as a friend, colleague, healer, “guardian angel,” and, above all, as a doctor gifted with a memorable laugh and truly exceptional dedication to his patients. This endowment will offer essential long term funding for programs and services at Mount Sinai not covered by our Health Agency. Gifts from many donors will honour Dr. Becker by providing a permanent revenue stream to support Asthma Management, Outpatient Pulmonary Rehabilitation, Palliative Home Care, and Palliative Long Term Care. These tributes are a fitting thank-you to an extraordinary physician who has done so much for so many people.

Benevolent Women Leave Lasting LegaciesPlanned Giving

In 2013 we received notable legacies that will preserve the spirit of three remarkable women. It is our privilege to celebrate their wise planning and generosity.

Goldie Raymer was raised by European Jewish parents. When she set out to nurture her own family she did so firmly grounded in that tradition. For her, a Jewish home was pivotal to life; she also believed strongly in tzedakah and the power of giving. Her solid sense of community was evident whenever she wore her Lion of Judah pin, [a global symbol of exemplary Jewish philanthropy]. Elegant, witty and very kind, she recognized Mount Sinai’s special role in the community and wanted to make a significant bequest. Her generosity allowed us to acquire more pressure-relieving mattresses. These highly specialized and expensive mattresses are valuable in providing care to patients who are not mobile, relieving discomfort through a therapeutic system. They eliminate the primary cause of pressure sores and assist in the relief of pain in patients.

Marilyn Roth had MS. When her disease made it impossible to live independently she turned to Mount Sinai, which became her home for the last 23 years of her life. Showing fierce independence and striving to overcome her physical constraints and participate in activities whenever she could Marilyn volunteered, attended concerts, played the lottery and even visited the country on assisted excursions. She loved poetry and hung her work in her room. Mount Sinai was her home. “Despite her situation, she was always positive, hopeful and grateful to all,” one of her caregivers wrote. Having experienced first hand the difference private support made in her daily life and surroundings, she left a generous legacy. Her gratitude will benefit other patients in the years to come.

Ruth Shugar and her husband Harold were long-time active philanthropists. The attachment they had for their community was strongly rooted in the tremendous circle of friends they had amassed and the causes they all shared. Paying it forward to the community who gave so much to them was, in her final years, what Ruth wanted most. Her sister had been cared for at Mount Sinai, and Ruth appreciated the care and attention she received. When planning her legacy, she wanted above all to provide comfort for future patients. Her bequest will purchase special lifts to transport patients with reduced mobility.

Planned giving is an ideal option and thoughtful philanthropic leadership choice for those who wish to leave a lasting legacy. It may be an immediate gift or one transferred to the future, in the form of a bequest designated by your will. It provides individuals with a unique opportunity to take advantage of tax benefits and is certain to have a significant impact in the lives of patients, families and staff.

By paying tribute to donors who so generously donated in this way, we acknowledge those who have passed away but whose gifts are helping Mount Sinai Hospital today.

If you’ve been inspired by any of these stories please contact Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation, (514) 369-2222 ext. 1299.

Magic Moments

Lederman Foundation Award

Making wishes come true

Spotlight on exceptional teamwork

Mount Sinai Hospital’s palliative program offers patients and their families comprehensive and compassionate end of life care associated with life-threatening illnesses. Magic Moments plays a pivotal role in the psycho-social and spiritual elements of patient care, by making it possible to respond to the personal needs of each patient. Magic Moments is one of the few wish programs for adult palliative care patients in North America. It was spearheaded in 2003 by Sheila Zittrer and a group of volunteers who made their own personal commitments and solicited funds for the creation of this program. Judy Thau, daughter of the late Edgar and Marjorie Bronfman, in recent years has stepped in, via the Oasis Foundation, to ensure its ongoing vitality and to honour her parents. Judy’s loyalty and steadfast support of Mount Sinai have allowed the Magic Moments program to become an integral part of the care provided to patients in the final chapter of their life story. Because these patients are adults with advanced illness, they have an acute sense that time is short. Most of their wishes are to connect with family or special friends—to experience quality face-to-face time with people who count. This can take the form of sharing a special family meal at a favourite restaurant, making a last visit to a summer cottage or organizing a wedding ceremony in the hospital garden. The palliative care team reviews each request carefully with the patient and their families and then does their utmost to accommodate it. One patient wrote: “Despite this illness, it was wonderful to get to spend time with everyone who loves me. That joy is what they will remember.”

An important new endowed prize has been created at Mount Sinai specifically to recognize teamwork in the hospital setting. Many individual staff members take part in caring for each patient. To achieve the highest level of care, they need to share what they observe and coordinate their tasks, working together as a team. The Lederman Foundation’s annual award will recognize the dedicated women and men who, working together as multidisciplinary teams, show leadership in improving the quality of care and enhancement of life for our patients.

The Lederman Foundation’s objective is to contribute to meaningful, charitable causes that in some way support and improve the lives of individuals. The Lederman Foundation is most proud of its accomplishments and is honoured to be associated with our hospital. The Lederman Foundation Award is the newest award created at Mount Sinai to recognize staff members for their excellent performance. It will be presented to a multidisciplinary team in 2014. Recipients will join the annual honorees who receive the Larry Kendall Award of Excellence (awarded annually to a nurses’ aide [PAB]), the Larry Kendall Award of Excellence (awarded to a member of the multidisciplinary council) and the Luba and Joseph Fishman Award (awarded annually to a registered nurse). These awards for staff showcase the value of the human touch in everything that happens at Mount Sinai Hospital. By recognizing outstanding examples, they celebrate, encourage and motivate the whole staff. Most important, these awards embody the gratitude of all our patients and their families.

A perfect August day for Sinai Rally 2013 Shopping for charity is great retail therapy…Special Events Six in the City 2014

The Sinai Rally has been the signature event of the Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation for the last nine years. It is well known within the Montreal community and has been very effective both in terms of its strong brand recognition as well as in its ability to attain financial success. This year we raised $330,000 thanks to the generosity of everyone involved!

The ninth annual Sinai Rally took place on August 18, 2013, on the most perfect summer day. With more than 300 participants, volunteers and dinner attendees, the day and evening was a triumphant sensation. The cocktail and closing dinner took place at the beautiful St. Raphael Golf Course and included a moving and emotional tribute to Dr. Rubin Becker.

A big thank-you to our tireless Co-Chairs Laura Borsellino, Danny Di Schiavi and Danny Steinberg who, along with a devoted executive committee, helped make this event a complete hit!

As always, we owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to our drivers, navigators, donors, volunteers and generous corporate sponsors.

Your continuous support allows us to keep rallying!

The 4th annual Six in the City Fashion Filled Fundraiser took place on Thursday evening, April 24, 2014 at Rockland and was a wonderful success. The day-long event ran into the late evening and offered a lunch and a light bite at the 6:00 pm cocktail dinatoire. Participants were warmly welcomed and well treated due in part to the generosity of our sponsor, Rockland.

This exclusive event is, as always, a great opportunity to shop at a discount while raising funds for Mount Sinai Hospital Foundation. All the proceeds benefit essential respiratory, palliative and long term care programs in the hospital.

Ricky’s Legacy Lives On

Project Zieba, Saving Young Lives

Project Zieba was created in 2009 in memory of Ricky Zieba who died in June of that year. A student and football player at Concordia, Ricky fell asleep at the wheel of his car while driving home late one night.

After his tragic death, his family became strong advocates for educating young people about the hazards of driving tired. With the complete support of Dr. Marc Baltzan and Mount Sinai’s Sleep Clinic, we created and launched a speaking campaign aimed at young drivers.

Dr. Baltzan is a lively speaker and an expert in the field of sleep and sleep deprivation. He knows the critical role sleep plays in maintaining health and achieving top physical and mental performance. His presentations, tailored to a teenaged audience, present solid scientific information in a visually engaging way.

Bringing the “don’t drive tired” program into high schools is our way of educating kids about the fatal dangers of road fatigue. Given that driver fatigue is the third highest cause of road fatalities in Quebec, according to the SAAQ, we know this program has the power to save lives.
