legacy givingmaking a difference through

There are many ways to leave a lasting legacy to your community; one of the most common and effectivemeans of ensuring that the Island you’ve loved during your lifetime will continue to be a special place long afteryou’ve gone is to name Mackinac Island Community Foundation (MICF) in your future giving plan, therebyjoining the Legacy Society. There are two easy steps to join the Legacy Society with your planned ordeferred gift: First, arrange for a planned gift to MICF in consultation with your attorney or financial advisor.Second, inform MICF that you have made arrangements for a planned gift in your will or estate plan.

mackinac island community foundation recognizes individuals and couples who have named micf asa beneficiary of any type of planned or deferred gift. The purpose is to acknowledge and thank those whohave made these gifts and to encourage and inspire others to do the same. We are deeply grateful to thesemembers. They have given a commitment that will benefit generations to come.

dear mackinac island community foundation,I would just like to take a

moment and thank all of themembers of our CommunityFoundation, along with a specialthank you to Mrs. McGreevy andMr. Dorman for all of their workcoordinating the scholarships Ihave received.

Since attending the Universityof Michigan, and experiencing thegreat world, I have found thecommunity I was raised in andwhich continues to support me tobe one of the biggest keys to mysuccess.

Entering into my senior year I will be graduatingfrom Michigan in the spring with a degree inEngineering Physics and Computer Science, and I cansay with certainty that without both the support of theCommunity Foundation and the general MackinacIsland community as a whole I would have never, orat least without great struggle reached all of my goalsI set out for just four years ago. I hope that as thecommunity grows and transforms that it will alwayscontinue to encourage and support all of our studentsas it has me.sincerely,Jeremy m hepkerclass of 2015, mackinac island public school

Mackinac Island cottager, Katherine “Kitty” Hannabass, through a contribution to the Community Foundation, created the natural resources preservation fund inmemory of her husband, Hayden, which will provide anever-ending source of funding for projects to preserveMackinac Island's natural resources.

"She could often be found walking the trails behind theEast Bluff, whistling as she went along, observing the floraand fauna and making careful note of the birdsong sheheard. In later years she would often be out in the samewoods or down by the Cove with camera, pastels andsketchbook in hand, recording her interpretation of theflowers, trees, rocks and shoreline she loved so dearly.Kitty and Hayden Hannabass always had a deepappreciation for nature and so it was “natural” she wouldmemorialize Hayden by establishing the NaturalResources Preservation Fund in his honor. Kitty had greatconcern that native species on the Island that she hadknown since childhood were being crowded out and takenover by non-native, invasive trees and plants; she wantedto help address this issue through public educationprograms. we are grateful kitty chose to honor herhusband in a way that might benefit the entire islandfor years to come." Friend and fellow EnvironmentalAdvisory Committee Member, Nicki Griffith

island youth making a difference through

The Youth Advisory Council (YAC) encourages youth leadership development on Mackinac Island. The councilis composed of young people and adult mentors and was created to teach the community's youth about theimportance of philanthropy. The Youth Advisory Council demonstrates youth involvement in four areas:assessing youth needs, raising a portion of their required expenditures, reviewing grant applications for awardsfrom the Youth Fund and developing systems for involving other young people in volunteerism and philanthropy.

Over the past 5 years, YAC has held a spring brunch raising money for the Youth Fund. Throughout the winterthe council participates in delivering meals for Ste. Anne Catholic Church’s Meals on Snowmobiles and the annualSaint Patrick’s Day dinner. Grants from the Youth Fund may be used for charitable, scientific, literary or educationalpurposes. Many of the grants focus on youth and youth development.
