Brief History• Established in 1922 as a humble technical school• It expanded over the years to become a Center

for Higher Education in East Africa in 1935• On July 1, 1970, Makerere became an

independent national university of the Republic of Uganda, offering undergraduate and postgraduate courses leading to its own awards –

• The University transitioned from the Faculty-based to the collegiate system on 1st July 2011

student attends class in at least one of the colleges.They are;

Conclusion

It is very evident that Makerere University is an enigma, so full of good yet with equally much

bad;‘Beauty and the beast it is’

And the students do enjoy their University. Poor sanitation or not, they will enjoy their

porridge nights, solidarities, pray and play and of course read to keep Makerere one of

Africa’s best universities
