RABBI'S MESSAGEBy Rabbi Michael Gold
2
Dear Friends, I was recently asked to submit an article to Parklander maga-zine, which often has columns from local clergy. Obviously this is read by people of various faiths. Here is what I wrote.Mardi Gras fell this year on Tuesday, February 9. Purim will begin on Wednesday night, March 23. Usually these two events,
one on the secular and one on the Jewish calendar, are closer together. All the Jewish holidays were pushed late this year because it is a leap year in the Jewish calendar. Yet Mardi Gras and Purim have a lot in common, and it is not simply where they fall on the calendar. Mardi Gras is also known as Carnival. It is a time for masks and costumes, for partying, for food and often too much drink. Purim is also time for masks and costumes, for partying, for food (hamentaschen or triangular cakes shaped like Haman’s ears) and too much drink. Jewish tradition teaches that on Purim one should drink enough so that we cannot differentiate between “blessed be Mordecai” and “cursed be Haman." The ties between the two celebrations are still deeper, filled with religious meaning. Mardi Gras has deep religious roots. It literally means “fat Tuesday” and is the day before Ash Wednesday on the Christian calendar. With Ash Wednesday, Christians begin the forty day solemn period of Lent. Many religious Christians will give up some kind of pleasure during this period in order to focus on spiritual matters. And of course Lent culminates on the holiest day of the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday, the day according to Christianity when Jesus rose from the dead. It is the time when Christians celebrate the possibility of redemption. I find a Jewish parallel in the days beginning with Purim and leading to Pesach [Passover]. Purim and Pesach are exactly one month apart. Jews use this month to prepare their homes for the festival, cleaning and removing all leaven. In one month we go from the Jewish equivalent of Carnival to the Jewish day of redemp-tion. Pesach is the day when we celebrate the Jewish liberation from slavery in Egypt. Pesach teaches that God is a redeemer and that we humans are not stuck in a narrow place (the actual Hebrew meaning of the word Mitzrayim – Egypt.) However constricting life is today, the future will be much brighter. This pattern of religious celebration from masquerades to redemption becomes important as we consider the reality of our world today. We consider the horrible events during the past several months in Paris and San Bernardino as well as the ongoing attacks against Jews in Israel. We consider the growth of ISIS and the evil throughout the world done in the name of religion. Some have given up any hope for redemption. But others have used this time to return to their faiths, coming to churches and synagogues and yes, even mosques, and declaring that a future redemption is possible.
(Simchat Purim) Have a Joyous PurimRabbi Michael Gold

CANTOR'S MESSAGEBy Cantor Jonathan Angress Yahrzeit
Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative. All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle. Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating to charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.
Shalom! By the time you read this, we will most likely have had our annual concert, “A Jewish Night On Broadway II” at TBTST. For those of you who attended, I would like to personally say thank you for coming and on behalf of our guest performer, Jennifer Hope Wills and myself, we certainly hope you enjoyed the show. I particularly would like to thank our sponsors for your contribution and for helping make sure our show was a success. And of course, how could I not mention my concert committee: Drs. Bruce and Joanna Berkowitz, Sherry and
Stew Klawsky, Cheryl Temkin, and Fern Brooker. I could not have done any of this without their help! I look forward to continuing to bring quality musical and theatrical programming to our synagogue in the future. At the end of this month, I will be taking a couple of days to visit New York City along with Rabbi Gold, Ava Phillips, and our confirmation class. I am look-ing forward to exploring “Jewish New York” with them and even visiting my old stomping ground: the Jewish Theological Seminary. However, one of the highlights of this trip I am most looking forward to, is seeing the Broadway show Finding Neverland which is based on the film of the same name. The show is about author J. M. Barrie and how he came to write the story of Peter Pan. Matthew Morrison (of Glee fame) originated the role of J. M. Barrie, which is currently being played by Tony Yazbeck (fresh off the boat of the most recent Broadway revival of On The Town). Rumors are flying that Welsh singer and actor Alfie Boe (most famous for playing Jean Valjean in the 25th anniversary concert of Les Miserables in London) will step into the role replacing Yazbeck. There is no set date as to when this will happen. Interestingly enough, the role of Madame du Maurier (originally played by Carolee Carmello) is currently being played by Sandy Duncan who starred in the title role in the 1979 revival of Peter Pan (replacing Mary Martin). I know that both Rabbi Gold and I are very excited to see the show and I am currently work-ing on seeing if we can meet some of the actors afterwards. Leave it to me to have friends who know people in the cast. And if our trip isn’t Broadway filled enough, I recently received an email from another Broadway actor, Adam Kantor, who is currently starring as Motel the Tailor in the current revival of Fiddler on the Roof. Adam is a very good friend of last year’s “A Jewish Night On Broadway” guest performer, Lauren Molina, who had given him my contact info. Adam’s great-grandfather was a semi-well known “Golden Age” chazzan (hence the last name Kantor) and Adam reached out to me knowing that I would soon be visiting New York. He recently came across some musical manuscripts of his great-grandfather’s and asked if I could spare some time to take a look at them and give him some information about it. I am certainly hoping that all of these Broadway encounters will be entertaining, joyful, and educational for our confirmation class. So needless to say, our trip to New York will certainly be busy and Broadway-star-filled!
I’ll give your regards to Broadway!Cantor Jonathan Angress

Membership Committee
The Membership Committee is charged with retaining members and bringing in new members to TBTST. So, if you have some new ideas on how to increase our TBTST family, why don’t you join our committee and help, “make it happen”. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, March 9th at 7:30 pm. Feel free to contact Bruce Berkowitz at [email protected] or just come to our next meeting."Bruce BerkowitzMembership VP
RAP WITH THE RABBIA NARRATIVE ABOUT CREATION:
KABBALAH, PROCESS PHILOSOPHY AND MY PHD DISSERTATION(Sundays once a month: 9 am bagels, 9:30 lecture)
April 17 – Mind is in Process • May 15 – A Narrative about CreationThe Bible and Everything Else Under the Sun – Wednesdays 12:15 – 1:15 at the office of Ken Rubin in Coral Springs, 9900 Sample Road Suite 404, Coral Springs, FL 33065, beginning September 30.
Why Not Join a Committee?
As it happens, much of the “work” of TBTST and most of the planning takes place in committees. So, committee mem-bership is a great place to begin becoming involved in synagogue life. Every congregation relies on its volunteers both to work and to lead. Most committees are open to all who are interested and willing to participate. Two committees that are very in-terested in finding new, enthusias-tic members are the Membership Committee, and the Marketing and Communications Committee. Volunteers are always welcome to be part of our Tikkun Olam com-mittee, the sponsors of our enor-mously successful annual Mitzvah Day. The Rabbi is always looking for people interested in the Adult Education Committee. Our Ways and Means Committee serves as a program committee and manages many of our synagogue events. Extra hands are always sought to help in those activities. If you have children, you know about our PTOs. Keep them in mind as well. Both the Sisterhood and the Men’s Club sponsor programs and support activities that benefit the synagogue. They both do their work in a social atmosphere and many deep friendships have arisen among their members. If the notion of a committee conjures up the world of corporations, cubicles and bureaucracy (ours are much friendlier by the way) think about becoming active in one of our auxiliaries. Only you know what might interest you and, if you do, let the office know and they will put you in touch with the relevant chairperson. If you know that you would like to help, but are unsure about just what you might enjoy doing, talk to one of the officers of the congregation or to the presidents of the Sisterhood or the Men’s Club.

Security Update
In the past months, we have installed internal security cameras throughout the Education and Administrative wings of the building, and these cameras may be viewed from monitors located in our offices. The cameras are being recorded and may be played back should the need arise. We have also placed additional lighting on the east side of the building. Most recently, we have contracted a security company to place an armed guard on our premises during the most active hours. These include all hours that our early childhood, religious school, and youth groups are in session, as well as our religious services. The purpose of this level of security is to provide a visual deterrent, while ad-dressing a need that had been brought up repeatedly by our school parents and temple congregants. We will continue to tweak the security schedule and make adjustments as needed, and we ask for your understanding during the initial stages.
Please feel free to contact us should you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Amir Watynski Nancy Small Sherry KlawskyPresident Immediate Past President Security Committee Chair

Why not share it?
If you have a topic that you think would be of interest to other congregants, let us know. We’ll ask you to write a short article (emphasis on short!) about your experience for possible insertion into the Scroll and to provide pic-tures if relevant. Writing should be conversational in tone and if you mention other congregants in your article, please confirm their approval in advance.

TBTST is Also a Community Center As our year is underway, we have many exciting things going on at TBTST. Please join me in welcoming our new Business Manager, Sandra Edelboim. Sandra brings over 30 years of experience in synagogue administrative life, and she has already gotten settled into her position in the office. Feel free to stop by and say hello! Our sisterhood returned from their voyage at sea, and from all accounts, their weekend cruise was a wonderful experience.
Not only did they partake in the usual cruising activities, but they also held Friday night and Shabbat morning & Havdallah services, complete with torah reading. By all accounts, it was a special time. Our youth groups braved the cold weather and had a memorable camping trip at Camp Owaissa Bauer, an annual tradition. Our kids warmed up by a bonfire, played sports, and interacted with other bonding activities. A special thank you to all parents who chaperoned the event, helping with activities and cooking. Yashir Koach to Diana and her staff for a great weekend. Our first social event of the year, Karaoke night, was a hit. Friends gathered, sang (mostly on key), and everyone had a fun night. Join us for our second fundraising social event of the year, Dueling Pianos 2, on March 12th. For the World Wide Wrap, the Men’s Club taught our 6th and 7th graders how to put on t’fillin and Rabbi Gold shared some insight on the custom. After morning services we all enjoyed pancakes and eggs for breakfast. Tickets are on sale for A Jewish Night on Broadway 2. You won’t want to miss out on this extraordinary event on March 6th, as our own Cantor Angress performs with Broadway actress Jennifer Hope Wills. It is sure to be an entertaining evening. It is evident that TBTST is a community center where we gather, learn, and socialize. Please join us. Your friends are waiting for you at Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek.
Thank you,Amir Watynski
CHAVURAH NEWS Our Chavurah had a wonderful belated Chanukuah Party at Gloria Rosen-blum's house in December. We all contributed something to make this event a huge success. Each of us told a little about ourselves and it was very interest-ing. Several of our members were unable to attend due to illness and we wished them a speedy recovery. Legacy Giving...Is Temple Beth Torah
Sha'aray TzedekIn Your Will?
The synagogue’s role begins at birth and continues with-out interruption throughout the entire course of our lives. By remembering the synagogue in our wills, we can do our part to assure future generations that their religious home will be there to serve. We depend upon more than just dues alone to sustain all that we do. If we are concerned about the future of Judaism, we must project its influence and our influ-ence into the future. Few memorials are more worthy than those provided by an en-dowment to TBTST through a bequest. Your legacy can reflect everything that is most im-portant and meaningful to you. You can declare where your funds might be used – to supply the Hebrew School, for example, or to support one of TBTST’s designated funds. We all want TBTST to be a spiritual home for genera-tions to come, just as it has been for you and your family. Let us ensure the future of our congregation and help it grow and serve our people.
Welcome To Sandra Edelboim
Sandra Edelboim moved to South Florida in 1977 with her husband Amos and 1 1/2 year old son Jason. After the birth of her second son Morgan, she began teaching at the Hebrew Academy of Miami Beach. At that time she became very in-volved in the Jewish community and sat on the Board of the Miami Beach JCC.
In 1982 she joined the staff of Temple Emanu-El of Miami Beach under the renowned Rabbi, Dr. Irving Lehrman. Sandra stayed with Temple Emanu-El for 15 years, the last two as Act-
ing Executive Director. In 1998 she became the Administrator of Temple Menorah, a multi generational congregation of families who immigrated to the United States from Cuba, where she was warmly embraced by the congregation. In 2003 she joined the staff of Temple Beth El as Administrator. She was there in 2005 when Hurricane Wilma destroyed the south side of the building and played an important role in its restoration, working closely with the Executive and Res-toration committees to achieve their goals of taking a fifty year old building into the new millennium. Now Sandra has joined the staff of Temple Beth Torah Sha’aray Tzedek as the new Business Manager. She brings with her years of experience in Jewish non-profit management. We welcome her and look forward to working with her. Sandra has two grandchildren Eden & Bradley, both of whom attended Jewish Day Schools in South Florida.

Early Childhood NewsSydney Berlin, Early Childhood Director Calling
all Angels.......
Have you noticed our upgraded playground? When you come into the building on your way into the sanctuary, please peer out the etched windows and see our newly renovated play area.
You'll notice the grassy green surface covering the cushioned protective under layer, insuring that our children can play safely.
Since our playground is used year round, it gets lots of use. Unfortunately our renovation costs ran higher than initially expected because the ground needed to be properly prepared.
This would be a wonderful opportunity to make a contribution to help underwrite the cost of the playground renovation and support our children.
Please drop off your donations in the main office and mark "PLAYGROUND" in the memo line. All donations will be greatly appreciated!
CONGRATULATIONS...The Early Childhood Center is proud to announce that we received a perfect score on our VPK Provider Readiness Rate.
Each year our former PreK classes are tested within the first 30 days of Kin-dergarten. How each child performs on this test is then used to rate our school and our VPK program. Although our school has always scored in the top 10%, this year we are so excited to share our perfect score. We are one of very few schools who have ever achieved this! Yet another reason to commend our won-derful and hardworking TBTST teachers and give a round of applause to our former PreK graduates of 2015.
This time of year is one of the busiest for the ECC. We are half way through our school year but still have so many great things left to accomplish. Our classes are excitedly learning the story of Purim. We have an interactive Purim puppet show coming in which will be a fun morning in the ECC. March is also the time when the farm comes to visit us. After finish-ing a unit on animals and farm life we will get a special visit
where each class can learn about the different animals on a farm and interact with them in our very own petting zoo. Our Pre-K class just celebrated their 100th day of school. The 100th day is more than just a milestone, it’s the perfect time to have fun with the number 100. We practiced math and observation skills by counting and sorting, we created artwork and enjoyed some yummy treats along the way. Summer camp and school registration for next year are just getting started. We have some great early bird discounts to those families who register early. We tend to give a lot of school tours to parents and children this time of year. I love showing off our incredible school and faculty to prospective families while educating them about our great curriculum. We have our first open house for prospective families on March 10th from 9:30am-11:30am. If you know someone looking for an award winning preschool please let them know about our open house. Our school just finished our 2nd annual ECC Fashion Show. This year’s theme was, Unmask the Superhero in You. Each class represented a different type of superhero, Jewish superheroes, literary, comic book and real life heroes. It was such a wonderful event and fundraiser for our ECC. We had close to 200 families and extended relatives in our Social Hall cheering on their TBTST child or family member. We had a delicious catered brunch, great boutique shopping, raffle prizes and silent auctions, all supporting our ECC. The event was a huge success and in 2 short years has become one of the highlights of our year! Save the date, our next Tot Shabbat will be on Friday, April 15th. More informa-tion will be available soon.

The Persian empire of the 4th century BCE extended over 127 lands, and all the Jews were its subjects. When King Ahasuerus had his wife, Queen Vashti executed for failing to obey his com-mands and follow his orders, he decided to host a beauty pageant to find a new queen. A Jewish girl, Esther, won the king’s heart and lo and behold, she became the new queen. Unbeknown to the king, Esther did not mention this one tiny detail- that she was a Jew. In fact, no one in the whole kingdom knew except, of
course for Mordechai and he was going to keep it a secret because that is what Esther wanted. Meanwhile, as she was becoming Queen of Persia, the very anti-semitic Haman was appointed prime minister of the empire and he wanted everyone in the land to bow down to him. Mordechai refused to bow down to him because Jewish people are not supposed to bow to anyone except, of course, G-d. Haman was so angry at Mordechai that he convinced the king that all Jews in the land should be killed. Haman, on the 13th day of the month of Adar, made a lottery, hence the name Purim which means “lots” and on that day all the Jews were going to be killed. Meanwhile, Mordechai galvanized all the Jews in the land to repent, fast, and pray to Hashem and Esther asked the king and Haman to join her for a wonderful feast. It was at this seudah that the beloved Esther revealed to the king that she herself was a Jew and that Haman was planning to have all the Jewish people in the land exterminated. Haman ended up being hanged and Mordechai became the prime minister, and a new decree was issued granting the Jews the right to defend themselves against their enemies. On the 13th of Adar, the Jews were able to kill many of their enemies and on the 14th day of Adar, they rested, celebrated, partied and ate a festive meal.Today, we celebrate Purim in much the same way. We dress up in many different costumes, we eat a seudah or a festive meal, we must hear the megillah, aka “The Book Of Esther”, not just once but twice and we have to listen to every single word! During the reading of the Megillah, whenever we hear the name, Haman, we are permitted to use noisemakers or graggers or stamp our feet to eradicate his evilname. Purim is the only time when it is actually a mitzvah in the Temple to make noise and not get into trouble. As well, we are supposed to follow the custom of Matanot La’evyonim or giving to the needy and participating in Mishloach manot. Even though Purim is not considered a torah holiday, it is very important to us as a Jewish nation. Please join us on March 23rd at 6:30 pm for mincha and megillah reading in the sanctuary and Hamantashen after the services. There will be a pasta dinner for $5.00 per person for anyone who makes reservations. The evening will be a blast and I urge all of you to come out and have some fun.

Another Great MonthBy: Samantha Gaynor
The month of February brought more for USYers than just University of Florida admission decisions. Some memorable events that “spring” us into the rest of the year. At the Masquerade Ball on February 20th, USYers dressed up and got down at a dance with our friends from Margate and CSK. Hors d’oeuvres and mocktails were enjoyed at the event, as well.
The dance also featured a silent auction and other items for sale with proceeds going to SA/TO (Social Action/Tikkun Olam). Keeping with the SA/TO theme, March 6th brought SA/TO Sunday, an annual event of fundraising for charity and doing mitzvah projects. This year, USY made blankets for JAFCO, a nonprofit organization designed to bring homes to abandoned and abused youth. Another special feature of SA/TO Sunday is the sub-regional board elections. With great speeches and passionate candidates, this year’s elections were just as spirited as any other. Chapters also got to compete for Joe Nebesh, beginning with a lip sync/skit that exemplifies this year’s theme of Space Jam. Chapters get Joe Nebesh points throughout the year by having ruach at events. Those points are combined with the SA/TO Sunday competition points to win the prize, a stuffed doll with an item of clothing from each chapter that won them over the years. Also, the chapter that has become the most improved during the year wins another doll named Bro Nebesh, Joe Nebesh’s little brother. We have to send huge congratulations to Sami Ronik for being selected for Mem-bership/Kadima (Mem/Kad) position on the USY International General Board. The USY International General Board is selected by each USYer who holds that position. Although most of the IGB’s plans are secret Sami plans to help tighten the USY/Kadima bond internationally along with the three other people, from New York, Northern California, and New Jersey, respectively, who were selected for the general board along with her. USY wraps up another successful month and looks forward to more to come.
Youth Department is having a HUGE fundraiser. There will be great prizes, if your name gets drawn.
Please look out for more information.

At the end of January, some of us set sail and experienced a most wonderful Shabbaton at sea. Thanks to the meticulous planning by Caryn Dubrow, Hedy Gordon and Sherry Klawsky, the weekend was a huge success. We prayed together, we sang together, we laughed together, we studied together and we played together. The comeraderie and the congeniality was something
quite special. It truly was a weekend to remember! The month of February was quite a potpourri of programs. Our own Dianne Solomon brought us up to date on Cyber Security and offered safety tips for credit and debit cards. She informed us on how to best protect our computers, tablets, phone and above all our bank accounts…Always wanting to bring new ideas and events to our sisterhood, we had our very first Havdallah, dinner, and movie night. What a trifecta! Coinciding with the opening of “Dough” in the movie theaters, we were able to show it in the comfort of our very own sanctuary…We ended the month with another special Shabbat weekend. We were the host synagogue for honoring our two International Presidents, Allan Gottesman of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs and Carol Simon of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Attendees came from throughout the State of Florida and participated in all the events of the Shabbaton including our Shabbat services. Yasher Koach to all! March has us getting ready for Purim. We all know the story of Purim as we learned it in Hebrew School, but on March 17th, Sandra Lillienthal will tell us what we didn’t learn – what they wouldn’t teach us in Hebrew School– about Vashti. Sandra is always interesting and entertaining, so please make sure to join us for Vashti’s Banquet! The first weekend in April is going to be an all out sisterhood weekend! April 1st and 2nd will be our Sisterhood Shabbat. We encourage as many of you as possible to participate. Please contact Sherry Klawsky at [email protected]. Don’t be left out! On Sunday, April 3rd, we will be having our signature fashion show. This year, we are doing something a little bit different. We will be carrying over the theme of Vashti’s Banquet by showcasing fashions from Soma and Steinmart. This year we will be honoring two exceptional women from our sisterhood and synagogue – Jacqui Montag and Cheryl Temkin. And as always there will be plenty of raffle prizes. This is one weekend you don’t want to miss!
B’Shalom…Ellen

Why Not Join aChavurah?
As part of our New Roads to Engagement Project, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek is encouraging couples or families to bring their com-mon interests to the syna-gogue. This is not a religious group, but a group of family or friends that want to social-ize together. Perhaps it is an existing group of friends that you join each month to have dinner with, see a movie or attend a play. Any group of people with common inter-ests can form a Chavurah. Shortly, you will receive a brochure and questionnaire describing this concept, and asking only for you to complete and return the questionnaire to the syna-gogue office. Based on your responses, we will form a group that fits your needs. Please join with us as we reach out and engage our congregation. Watch for our brochure!

Are You On the List?
TBTST’s Sunshine Commit-tee notifies email recipients of the life events of fellow con-gregants in a timely manner. The committee sends notices of births, engagements, wed-dings, funerals, shiva details and hospitalizations.
If you would like to receive notices of Sunshine Joy or Sunshine Sadness, and would like to be added, please pro-vide your email address to [email protected].
Men’s Club
The Men's Club will also be having a Bagel and Shmearbreakfast on March 20th
Topic Financial and Legal Planning as we and our parents age.
Details to follow
By the time you receive this message we will have celebrated two very successful Men’s Club events. These were our Family Hockey Night and our Sunday morning Breakfast program, featuring Ira Winderman, sports reporter for the Sun Sentinel, talking about, “Sports, Newspaper Reporting and the Miami Heat”. We also had a very successful World Wide Wrap program. Thanks to Rabbi Gold and all our cooks for the delicious egg and pancake breakfast after services. On March 20th, our Sunday breakfast program will be on the topic of “Elder Law” given by an attorney specializing in this field. On March 23rd, the Men’s Club will be cooking for our annual Purim dinner. On January 27th we had a FJMC Florida Regional Meeting at TBTST and there was a great exchange of ideas. We are looking forward to a Florida Region retreat on May 13th-15th at Camp Shalom in Ocala. I attended a Florida Region retreat at this site a few years ago and it was great fun for all. Please remember that Yom Hashoah is coming in May and the Men’s Club will be sending out the “yellow” candles. We are looking forward to seeing you at as many of these upcoming events as possible. And please if you are a social media person please check out the Men’s Club TBTST site on Facebook.

Parking Lot Safety
Did you know that one of the likeliest places to be involved in a fender bender is in a parking lot? People seem to suspend their good judgment when looking for a parking space or when pulling out of one. Coming in, our first reaction is to dart forward to be the first to claim the closest spot possible. In our parking lot, most people park face in. There is nothing wrong with that, but you have to be extra cau-tious when backing out, because the car just opposite you may be doing the same thing at the same time. Always make a 360 degree check as you back out. Also, if you are here during the week, remember that our parking lot is accessed via 94th Avenue and there is both an elementary and a middle school just across the street. Watch out for kids crossing the street before you make your turn onto 94th Avenue. Be sure to check the time and to observe the school zone speed limits if they are in force. Here are some other tips:
• Hide or remove your valuables when leaving your car and be sure to lock the car when you step way. Even if you are just picking up your child from our Hebrew School, it only takes a minute for a thief to grab your cell phone or your purse.
• Leave your engine running until you’ve gathered everything and you’re ready to get out of the car but be sure to turn it off when you do.
• Be alert to notice other people in the parking lot. If your sixth sense urges caution, heed it and do not leave the car.
• When you’re walking back to your car, keep your keys in hand, so you can get into the car quickly.
• If you are looking for your car, press the lock door key, not the open door key to get your car to tell you where it is.
• Lock your doors once you get inside the car.

Tree of LifeThe tree has always been a symbol of life and strength in the Jewish tradi-tion. The parts of the tree depend upon one another just as those in need in our community depend upon Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek for help and support.
In the same manner, Temple Beth Torah Sha'aray Tzedek depends upon the generosity of our community to enable us to continue to provide that support. The Tree of Life is the perfect symbol to allow us to recognize the generous donors who, in turn, help us to continue providing necessary services to our community.
Consider honoring a friend or relative’s birthday, Bar/Bat Mitzvah, anniversary, etc. or using this as a memorial gift. By purchasing a leaf for the Tree of Life, you will not only be helping the Tree to grow, but you will also be helping TBTST to grow, now and in the future. There are gold, silver and bronze leaves available at a price of $180.If you are interested in supporting TBTST, please contact our office and we will gladly assist you. You can also email [email protected] or make your donation online at www.tbtst.org.

PRAYERS FOR THE SICK If a relative or friend is suffering from an illness, perhaps you would like to recite a special prayer for the speedy recovery of the ailing person. Traditionally, the Hebrew name of the sick person and the Hebrew name of the sick person's mother are mentioned during the prayer. It would be helpful if you would provide us with this information when you make your request. Prayers for the recovery of the sick are customarily accompanied by a gift to a deserving charity. The merit of this kind deed arouses God's mercy and His powers of healing. Although any amount is deemed appropriate on such an occasion, a gift of CHAI - $18 - or multiples of 18 - is particularly fitting when pleading for a person's recovery from sickness. CHAI in Hebrew means life. The two Hebrew letters which constitute the word - CHET and YUD - have the numerical equivalents of eight and ten respectively, together yielding the sum of eighteen. For this reason it has become a custom to give charity in the amount of CHAI when praying for the well-being of a suffering person. Enclosed please find a contribution in the sum of $ _____________________________________________________Please make a Misheberach (Prayer for the recovery) for:Name (English) _________________________________________________________________________________(Hebrew)_______________________Mother's Name (Hebrew) ___________________________________________

Yahrzeit is a Yiddish word, which literally means “time of year” or memorial. Jews of Ashkenazi descent use this term. Sephardim call this commemoration nahala, in Ladino. This custom is widely observed and based on the Jewish tradition of commemorating the death of a relative.
All the Yahrzeit rituals are deeply ingrained in the Jewish life. The common rituals that are performed in the honorable memory of the departed soul include reciting the Kaddish prayer and lighting a Yahrzeit candle.
Yahrzeit also includes the action of donating charity in memory of a deceased loved one. Through the performance of the mitzvah of tzedakah in the name of the departed, the merit of the deed is shared with the soul of the late relative, as their memory is enhanced.

The WECARE community outreach program operates a food pantry that provides over 3,500 bags of groceries each year to our neighbors in need regardless of race, religion, age, gender or nationality. We could not accomplish this important mitzvah if not for the generous donations we re-ceive year round from caring individuals, organizations, schools, synagogues and businesses in our community. Thanks to United Way of Broward County, we are also able to distribute fresh produce to needy people through Project Lifeline. Donations are greatly needed and appreciated to keep our shelves stocked so we can help the many men, women and children needing our services throughout the year. Currently, WECARE provides enough free non-perishable food and fresh produce to prepare over 65,000 meals for our neighbors in need. WECARE also collects small toiletry items, provides free medical equipment loans including wheelchairs, walkers and canes, distributes hand-knitted items to nursing home residents, and collects eyeglasses and hearing aids that are sent to New Eyes for the Needy. Donations of toiletry items and medical equipment are very much appreciated. Facts about Hunger in Broward County According to Million Meals Committee, there are 19 active food pantries in Broward County inclusive of the Soref JCC WECARE Food Pantry, and 4 active food banks. The Broward Regional Health Planning Council, Inc., Food Security Survey Report notes that 44% of all students enrolled in Broward County elementary schools qualify for free and reduced lunches. 15% of 56,873 Broward children live in poverty.
