TABLE OF CONTENTS HOW TO REGISTERTrent Athletics is pleased to announce that we are upgrading our registration software and are launching our new system, Legend Software, on August 4th. This new system provides you with easier and more streamlined access to register for your favourite programs, as well as many online self-service customer benefits, including: online account payments and receipts, squash court booking, personal training booking, membership sales and renewals, and add-on services like towel service and locker rentals.

Online registration is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and payments can be made with Visa, Visa Debit and Mastercard. Visit our website at www.trentu.ca/athletics and click on the “Register Now” button for all the details on how to get started.

Register today in person at the Sales Centre Welcome Desk at the Athletics Centre. FREE FITNESS CONSULTATION AND ORIENTATION FOR TRENT STUDENTS AND NEW MEMBERSNew to the gym and not sure where to start?

Make an appointment with one of our certified personal trainers for a free fitness consultation. During this session a personal trainer will work with you to determine your individual fitness needs and goals as well as suggest exercises to help you reach those goals. Orientation to the cardio and weight equipment will help ensure that you understand how to use the equipment safely and effectively. At any time, our Sport Centre staff are available to answer questions or provide instruction on how to use the cardio and weight equipment.

MEMBERSHIP DESCRIPTIONSTrent Student Memberships: All Trent students registered at the Peterborough campus receive an Athletics Centre membership and the same membership benefits as all other membership types.

Adult: Ages 18+ and not a full-time student.

Senior: Ages 55+ (Proof of age is required).

Senior Family: Two adults each aged 55+ (Proof of age is required).

Family: All members of the immediate family who reside at the same household, including 2 adults and all dependents under the age of 18 and still living at home. (Youth 12 to 15 years of age must take part in the mandatory Teen Fitness Orientation (see page 14). Family members over 18 must show proof that they are a full-time student from a recognized college or university. Registered Trent students are not eligible under family memberships.

Student (18+): Full-time students who are 18 years of age or older and who have a valid full-time student card from a recognized university (other than Trent), college or high school.

Youth/Child (0 – 17): School aged children through 17 years.

Youth (12 – 15): Must take part in the mandatory Teen Fitness Orientation Program (see page 14) which allows unsupervised access to the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre. Youth aged 16 and older can access the Fitness and Lifestyle Centre without adult supervision.

Trent Faculty & Staff: Available to staff and faculty of Trent University, who are actively employed with the University. Staff identification must be shown at the time of registration.

Trent Retirees: Available to retired staff and faculty of Trent University and their spouses or partners.

CLASS DESCRIPTIONSDrop-in fitness classes are 45-55 minutes in length unless otherwise specified. Group fitness classes run on a first-come, first-served basis. During peak times, there may be sign-ups for over subscribed classes. Please see our fitness desk for more information.

BOOTCAMP

With alternating segments of aerobic and muscle conditioning, this high-energy class will push you to new limits. This is a high-intensity workout designed to challenge your whole body.

HIIT

Improve your overall strength, endurance, power and coordination in this all out total body class. Maximum fitness through short intense efforts followed by short recovery periods.

CYCLE & TONE

Get ready to sweat with high intensity interval training on the bike; followed by body weight strength and core conditioning off the bike.

ENDURANCE CYCLE

This cardio based workout is suitable for all fitness levels. Cycle through a series of flat roads, hills and sprints and challenge yourself to go the distance!

STEP & PUMP

Experience the step as a trainer without worrying about overly complex choreography. This class will focus on simple patterns and movements that will make you sweat while toning and strengthening. High intensity, but low impact.

SIMPLY STRENGTH

Define and refine in this all strength conditioning class. Improve your technique; while exploring a variety of strength training options from body weight, bars, weights, bands and balls.

TRIPLE THREAT (20-20-20)

Test your limits with this challenging fast paced workout that combines cardio, strength and core training.

NIA TECHNIQUE

This class combines Jazz, Modern and Duncan Dance with Martial Arts: Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Tai Chi, and the Healing Arts of: Feldenkreis Method & Alexander Technique. Promoting overall conditioning through cardiovascular fitness while tapping into stamina, coordination, agility, flexibility, and balance to experience peace, strength and acceptance - the pathway to the Inner Journey.

STRETCH AND RELAX

A total body stretch class that you can participate in to the level you desire.

SPORTS CENTRE

The Athletics Centre’s bright, modern fitness facility includes a 12,000 sq. ft. cardio loft and weight room with state-of-the-art strength and cardio equipment. From Life Fitness elliptical trainers, treadmills and bikes to treadmills, rowing machines, and even a Jacob’s Ladder, we have it all. The cardio loft also boasts a large stretching area complete with medicine balls, body bars, hand weights, mats and stability balls. The weight room provides access to everything from machine weights to free weights. While working out, you can listen to music, tune in to the flat screen televisions or take in the picturesque views of the Otonabee River from two levels.

We are very excited to share that Trent Athletics has purchased an additional eight (8) pieces of Life Fitness 95T Discover Explore Console Treadmills and ten (10) pieces of the Life Fitness 95X Console Elliptical Cross-Trainers. Trent Athletics has now replaced the majority of all of the cardio equipment. We are committed to ensuring that we keep current and have new equipment for our Trent Students and Community Members.

As a Trent Student or Athletics Centre member you also have full access to a wide-range of group fitness classes. From yoga and Pilates to bootcamp and group cycling, our classes are designed to suit all fitness levels. Each class is taught by a certified, experienced and caring fitness professional. Group fitness participants are ensured a safe, fun class designed to meet your fitness needs and goals.

Group fitness classes are free for Trent University students and community members. Non-members can join any fitness class with the purchase of a day pass.

YOGA & PILATESIn addition to the great line-up of group fitness classes, the Athletics Centre at Trent is proud to offer one of the most comprehensive yoga and pilates programs in the city. With the most yoga classes offered of any fitness centre in the area, all members will be sure to find a yoga class that fits into your schedule.

HATHA YOGA

A beginner to intermediate yoga class that includes a series of yoga postures, breathing exercises and mindfulness to help bring balance to mind, body and spirit.

POWER YOGA

Fire up your practice with this vigorous yoga class designed to increase stamina, strength and flexibility through dynamic flowing sequences. Get your heart pumping while connecting to your inner power.

VINYASA YOGA

Combine movement with awareness of breath in this flowing gentle vinyasa practice. This class will move through a dynamic sequence of poses designed to increase overall connection to breath while stretching, strengthening and balancing the body.

PILATES - MAT CLASS

Each class will guide you through the core based exercises that help to improve fitness and prevent injuries. Full body strength and flexibility helps to relieve pain, unlock tight muscles and joints, strengthen your core postural muscles and create a youthful feeling in the body.

PILATES - MAT CLASS WITH RESISTANCE EQUIPMENT

Using dynamic movements that challenge the integrity of core muscle groups you will be guided through an energizing class that is fun and has the music to keep you motivated. Building on the foundation exercises we will use a variety of equipment such as stability balls, hand weights, therabands and rollers to increase the power of your core giving you the feel of a full body workout.

POWER HIPS

Using a variety of movements from Mat Pilates & Vinyasa Yoga this class focuses on the hip girdle: stretching the psoas, piriformis and sciatic regions, while strengthening the lower back, abs and legs.

PROGRAMS FOR 50+The following classes are included in the group fitness schedule and are FREE for Trent Students and members. While these classes are designed for the needs of our 50+ members, all are welcome to participate. Non-members can join any fitness class with the purchase of a day pass. AQUAFIT UPTEMPO

This class provides a slightly more challenging routine at a somewhat faster pace than a normal Aquafit class, it is a great way to exercise with low impact on your joints. This class can be taken in either the shallow or deep water.

AQUAFIT EASY

This class is a gentle pace with easily coordinated movements that strengthen mobility and activate your balancing muscles to help individuals that want to stay mobile, active and healthy!

BOOMERS AT THE BARRE

This is an invigorating, aerobic, safe workout that combines elements of ballet, yoga and pilates exercises at a ballet barre (or back of a chair). Barre exercises rely on your own body weight for resistance (bone building) and the moves will challenge your core stability and balance (falls awareness). No “tutus” required and no dance experience needed to enjoy this class.

GENTLE STRENGTH AND STRETCH

Combine the stability of seated chair exercises for experiencing flexibility, rhythmic breathing, functional twists with shifting weight bearing - strength exercises use hand weights. This class is suitable for all fitness levels and will enhance your awareness of day to day movement.

ON THE MOVE

This class will focus primarily on low impact aerobics and finish with endurance focused muscle conditioning and balance. Relax at the end with a good stretch!

HEART WISE The Athletics Centre is proud to be a partner with the Heart Wise Exercise Program, a network of community organizations who work with the University of Ottawa Heart Institute to provide exercise programs so individuals can exercise regularly to prevent or limit the effects of living with a chronic health condition.

ABOUT THE HEART WISE EXERCISE PROGRAM:

• Identifies exercise facilities and classes that are suitable for individuals with or at risk of developing a cardiovascular or chronic health issue.

• Helps individuals choose exercise facilities and classes that are ‘heart’ friendly. We identify out ‘Heart Wise Exerise Programs’ with the Heart Wise Exercise logo.

• Encourages regular, daily aerobic exercise.

• Encourages and incorporates warm up, cool down and self-monitoring with all exercise sessions.

• Allows participants to exercise at a safe level and offers options to modify intensity.

• Includes participants with chronic health conditions - physicial approval may be required.

• Offers Health screening for all participants.

• Has a documented emergency plan that is known to all exercise leaders, including the requirement of current CPR certification, phone access to local paramedic services and presence of an AED.

JUDO - ADULT

Judo is a fun sport for all ages. It is currently practiced in 200 countries worldwide. Through this program you will develop respect, control, calmness, will power, perseverance and confidence. You will develop fitness, flexibility, balance, endurance and self-defence. The ultimate goal of Judo is educational; Learning to make the best use of your energy through body/mind training. DROP-IN PICKLEBALL

Come join us every Monday, Wednesday and Friday for Pickleball. Pickleball is a drop in activity that is run by our members. This sport is a combination of table tennis, badminton and tennis. It is played on the badminton court with paddles and a whiffle ball. We welcome experienced players as well as first time players to join us for some fun. Register at the Sales Centre Welcome Desk.

SQUASH COURTSThe Athletics Centre offers three courts for reservation. One competitive international squash court, in addition to two North American courts.

The international squash court, measures 32 feet long and 21 feet wide – two feet wider than the existing North American courts, provides members with the opportunity to play on a regulation international court.

The sport of squash has evolved over the years, with the international court emerging as the court of choice used around the world for competitive play. This enables members of the community and the University to play, train or learn on an internationally recognized court.

The two North American squash courts at Trent stimulates participation in the sport for all ages and helps to draw competitive and recreational squash players alike to hone their skills, develop new strategies and experience the sport in an athletics centre unlike any other.

ROWING PROGRAMS THE CAROL LOVE ROWING/PADDLING TANK

Program Description Cost

LEARN TO ROW

(Ages 14 and up)

3 classes in 1 week

This program introduces adults and young adults to the sport of rowing. A qualified rowing coach will guide you through an orientation of the rowing tank. The orientation covers proper rowing technique, blade work and provides an introduction to both sweeping and sculling technique. This is a three lesson orientation after which participants can enroll in the Return to Row program or use the rowing tank to practice their new skills. Maximum capacity of 8 people.

This program follows on from the Learn to Row program or can be used as a continuation for those rowers moving indoor from the outdoor version of the Return to Row program. The program will review and enhance proper rowing technique, blade work with a particular emphasis on sweeping technique. PROCESS FOR ROCK WALL USETrent Students and Members wanting to use the climbing wall, must complete a rock wall orientation. This 60 minute orientation provides climbers with the knowledge of basic climbing, facility rules and the rock wall’s safety policies. Simply sign up on the climbing wall orientation sheet found at the Fit Desk.

CLIMBER SIGN IN Climbers must check in with the Sport Centre Attendant before using the rock wall. Only those climbers whose names appear on the completed Rock Wall Orientation List will be permitted to climb.

CLIMBER WAIVER FORMSClimbers must sign a waiver form prior to their first use of the rock climbing wall. Each waiver form is good for one academic term.

POOL RULES

Please abide by the rules when using the Allan Marshall Pool:

• Appropriate bathing attire is required

• All individuals who are not toilet trained must wear a swim diaper in the pools

• All swimmers must shower with soap and water before entering the aquatic area

• No food, drink or gum is permitted in the aquatic area (only non-breakable containers containing water are permitted)

• Outdoor footwear and strollers are not permitted anywhere on the pool deck (including seating area)

• Those with open wounds or communicable diseases are not permitted in the pools

• No spitting or spouting the pool water

• No running on the pool deck

The use of outside equipment such as inflatable toys, water wings, floating swimsuits, and PFDs are not permitted in the pools. SWIM TEST POLICY

In order to utilize the deep end, diving board and Tarzan Rope during Public Swims, individuals must successfully complete the Swim Test. Individuals are only permitted to attempt the Swim Test once per swim. Those who are unsuccessful in completing the Swim Test are encouraged to practice and attempt again on another day.

The Swim Test involves a foot first jump into the pool from the deep end wall, with a safe recovery to the surfaced followed by a 25-metre unassisted front swim (uninterrupted and consistent the full distance) to the shallow end wall without stopping or touching the bottom. Please note that Lifeguards will stop swimmers mid-way through a Swim Test attempt if the swimmer becomes weak or tired.

AGE ACCESS POLICY

Children ages 6 and under: must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age. The parent/guardian must remain within arms reach of the child. Maximum two children per parent/guardian.

Children ages 7 to 9: have the opportunity to demonstrate comfort in the water by attempting the Swim Test. Those who are not successful in completing the Swim Test must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age, who remains within arms reach. Maximum four children per parent/guardian. Those who are successful in completing the Swim Test may swim without being accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian (parent/guardian must remain on the pool deck).

Children ages 10 to 12: must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age who remains on the pool deck.

WARM THERAPY POOL

The therapy pool is designed for those who require specific therapeutic movement or a low intensity water exercise program. The pool is kept at 95°F and is particularly beneficial for individuals experiencing joint problems, injury recovery, recovery from surgery or an illness that prevents them from participating in weight-bearing exercise.

The 10 foot by 14 foot pool is equipped with a number of unique features:

• An underwater paddle wheel and jets to allow jogging or swimming against the water flow.

• A lift to assist individuals who may require assistance to move in and out of the water.

• Different depths to assist in the progress of your exercise or therapy.

Therapy pool bookings are made in 20 minute time slots and are available at the following times:

Private Lessons are designed for swimmers who require individualized teaching, or who are having difficulty with specific strokes, skills or techniques. These 30 minute private lessons are tailored to suit the swimmer, and will focus on areas specific to the individual.

SEMI-PRIVATE LESSONS

Participants with similar swimming abilities (2-3 people) are ideal for the Semi-Private 30 minute Lessons.

PRIVATE ADAPTIVE LESSONS

Private Adaptive Lessons are designed for swimmers with special needs who require individualized teaching. These lessons are 30 minutes in length and are tailored to suit the swimmer. Lessons will focus on the areas specific to the individual.

HOME SCHOOL SPORT DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM

This 12 week program is designed using the Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) and allows children to earn levels in their swim lessons as well as gain skills in different sports as outlined below. They will receive an hour of coaching in each sport, learn the rules, practice skills and drills and have the opportunity to do game play at the end of the second session. The last two weeks are a tournament play format where they will have an opportunity to participate in a small tournament of each of the sports learned in the previous lessons. Activities will include swim lessons, basketball, badminton, soccer, ultimate Frisbee, and water polo.

STEVE NASH YOUTH BASKETBALL PROGRAM

Steve Nash Youth Basketball (SNYB) is a national youth basketball program designed to develop fundamental skills, sportsmanship and a love for the game of basketball. The model for Steve Nash Youth Basketball was established after extensive research of existing community basketball programs from across North America. The curriculum follows the guidelines of Sport Canada’s Long Term Athlete Development Model (LTAD) and is endorsed and approved by Steve Nash, Canada Basketball and Provincial/Territorial Federations. The program includes a 2 hour session with new certified NCCP coaches every Saturday morning.

Participants will develop fundamental basketball skills through fun drills and weekly games as well as gain life skills that are applicable on and off the court. All participants will be given a Steve Nash Youth Baskeball reversible jersey, a Molten basketball, Poster and certificate of participation.

FACILITY RENTALSMany of the Athletics Centre’s indoor and outdoor facilities are available to rent at a competitive price. Such facilities include the gymnasium, Justin Chiu Stadium, fitness studios, beach volleyball courts, outdoor playing fields, Allan Marshall Pool, and more.

POLICIES

PROGRAM WAITLISTSIndividuals are strongly encouraged to place themselves on the waitlist for specific programs that are at capacity. The Athletics Centre utilizes the waitlists to schedule additional lessons or classes when possible, or to contact individuals when spaces become available in high demand programs.

CLASS TRANSFERSThere are no fees to transfer from one class to another in the same session. Any difference in cost as a result of the transfer is charged, and there are no refunds of fees for transferring to a lower priced class. No transfers take place after the second lesson.

PROGRAM CANCELLATIONSThe Athletics Centre at Trent reserves the right to cancel of transfer classes due to insufficient registration. Should classes be cancelled due to power failure, weather, pool fouling, etc., the department will schedule extra instructors during the final weeks of the session where possible to help ensure program quality. We cannot schedule makeup classes for individuals who miss classes due to time and space restrictions.

PROGRAM WITHDRAWALS & REFUND POLICY• Up to seven business days prior to the first class: Refund issued, less an

administration fee of 10% or $10 minimum

• Less than seven business days prior to the first class: Refund issued only with medical certificate, less an administration fee of 10% or $10 minimum

• After first class: Pro-rated refund issued with a medical certificate less an administration fee of 10% or $10 minimum

• One day clinics, crash courses, exam fees, recertification courses, or materials: No refund

LOCKERSDay-use Locker contents must be removed daily by facility closing time. Locks and contents will be removed from any lockers that are not emptied by facility closing time.

Rental lockers can be rented by Trent students and all members. Lockers must be vacated by the expiry date of the locker rental. Locker rental customers must supply their own locks. Locks and contents will be removed from any inappropriately occupied locker.

HSTAll fitness memberships, personal training, and registered programs are subject to HST. Fitness memberships or programs for individuals 14 years and under are HST exempt.

CELL PHONES/CAMERASThe use of cell phones or cameras is strictly prohibited in all change rooms, washrooms, and program areas of the Trent Athletics Centre.

APPROPRIATE ATTIREAll individuals using the Fitness Centre must wear appropriate athletic clothing and athletic shoes with non-marking soles. Street clothes, ripped or torn clothing, sandals, open-toed shoes and cleats are not permitted in the facility. Bare feet are not permitted unless required by a specific program. Appropriate pool attire is also required.

MEMBERSHIP CARDSAll Trent students and members must swipe their membership/student card when they enter the Athletics Centre, as well as use the Sport Centre (weight room and cardio loft). Membership cards may only be used by the registered member and any fraudulent use of the membership card may result in immediate suspension and loss of membership privileges with ne refund being made by the Centre.

Members who lose their card are subject to a $25 replacement fee. Trent students and members who have forgotten their card must check in at the Sales Centre Welcome Desk for access.

FACILITY ACCESS POLICYFacility: Children under the age of 10 years must be accompanied by a parent/guardian (who is 16 years or older) while in the building at all times.

Sport Centre: Individuals age 16 and older can fully access the Sport Centre without a parent or guardian. Youth age 12 to 15 can access the Sport Centre and equipment unsupervised once they have completed the Teen Fitness Orientation.

Public and Lane Swimming: Children ages 6 and under: must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age. The parent/guardian must remain within arms reach of the child. Maximum two children per parent/guardian. Children ages 7 to 9: have the opportunity to demonstrate comfort in the water by attempting the Swim Test. Those who are not successful in completing the Swim Test must be accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age, who remains within arms reach. Maximum four children per parent/guardian. Those who are successful in completing the Swim Test may swim without being accompanied in the pool by a parent/guardian (parent/guardian must remain on the pool deck). Children ages 10 to 12: must be accompanied by a parent/guardian who is at least 16 years of age who remains on the pool deck.

MEMBER CONDUCT

The Athletics Centre promotes a healthy, inclusive and safe environment based on mutual respect and a spirit of cooperation. Trent students and members can help us achieve this goal by supporting the following policies:

• No food or drinks (WATER ONLY in closed containers) is permitted in the Fitness Centre.

• The use of cameras is not permitted in any areas of the facility, unless authorized by the Athletics Centre management staff.

• Refrain from inappropriate and disrespectful conduct. This includes, without limitation, using loud, abusive, offensive, demeaning language, profanity, lewd conduct or any conduct that harrasses or is bothersome to other students, members or staff.

• Smoking, and the consumption of drugs or alcohol are not permitted.

• Personal trainers not hired or authorized by the Fitness Coordinator may not train clients within the Athletics Centre.

• Coats, boots, bags, etc. are not permitted in any fitness areas. Day use lockers are available in the change rooms.

• Students and members must wear appropriate athletic clothing and athletic shoes with non-marking soles. Street clothes, ripped or torn clothing, sandals, open-toed shoes, cleats, and bare feet are not permitted in the facility.

Trent Athletics is pleased to announce that we are upgrading our registration software with more online self-serve options for all customers, including online squash bookings. The new software and online registration system is available to all Trent students, community members and individuals/families wishing to register for programs.

To access the online registration system, simply visit our website at: www.trentu.ca/athletics and follow the instructions below.

TRENT STUDENTS

Improved online access will be available to Trent students this September so that you can register for your favourite campus recreation activity or one of our registered programs online. Remember, all Trent students are members and are eligible to receive member pricing on any registered program. Watch for information on our website and through the TCSA app later this month.

CURRENT MEMBERS

STEP 1: Go to trentu.ca/athletics and click on ‘MEMBER LOGIN’ on the right hand side of the page:

STEP 2: Select Reset My Password and follow the instructions. You will then receive an e-mail with a link to reset your password, at which time you can then login in to search for programs.

REGISTERING FOR A PROGRAMSTEP 1: If you are a new customer or a returning customer (not a student or community member), you will be asked to create a new profile. Begin by selecting the “BUY ONLINE” tab on the main website (www.trentu.ca/athletics).

STEP 2: Search for your program of interest under the program of your choice. Once you select the program, select “Register.” If registering a new profile, select “Click to register for an online account.” Please add your details and you can add family members later. Please ensure that you provide your e-mail address so that we can send you confirmation emails, receipts etc.

You will receive a confirmation email with a link to validate your e-mail address. Remember to check your SPAM folder for this email if it does not arrive in your Inbox.

STEP 3: From here you can select who you would like to be registered for the course. If you wish to add family members to register them for the selected course, you can “Add a New Participant.”

You can now complete your registration or add more participants to your profile.
