DIGNITY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL NEW YORKERSThis year we defended our communities.

In June, when the Supreme Court froze President Obama’s newest immigration relief program, we mobilized. Within hours, we began providing round-the-clock immigration screenings and training to the thousands who lined up outside our offices. We brought our message into the streets, winning powerful coverage in the nation’s leading publications.

Then, on November 9, we woke up to our worst nightmare. Community members flooded our offices to grieve, share stories, and plan our next steps. Within days, as the president-elect reiterated his plan to ramp up deportations, we mobilized 15,000 people in Manhattan, sending a defiant message: We are here to stay.

As we approach the end of 2016, we are preparing for the dark days to come. We are working to ensure that New York remains a leader in policies—from IDNYC to universal pre-k—that support immigrants and working people. We are exploring all possible ways to defend President Obama’s first immigration program, which has already provided desperately-needed relief from family separation to hundreds of thousands of young people.

Like never before, we are buckling down to defend our communities. Never before have our lives depended so much on our work. And never before have we been so determined to succeed.MRNY partnered with Brooklyn Borough President Eric L. Adams to

organize a major photo exhibit at Brooklyn Borough Hall featuring our members.

CRISTINA MOLINA, a domestic worker originally from Mexico, came to MRNY to learn English and defend her rights on the job, before joining the Fight for $15 and helping to lead the campaign to victory.

When JULIO CESAR ACOSTA was taken from his Long Island home by Immigration and Customs Enforcement, MRNY jumped into action—rallying, petitioning and leading a legal challenge—and finally

securing his release to his partner and their three small children. We win hundreds of cases like Julio’s to set the stage for system-wide reform.

Provided housing assistance to over 1,000 people, advising them about their rights as tenants, halting illegal evictions, and stopping landlord harassment.

Resolved the claims of a transgender client who was harassed and fired without cause by her employer. The legal team secured a U-visa certification from the NYC Commission on Human Rights, creating a new path to citizenship for thousands of trans immigrants.

Demanded access to decent employment, an end to discrimination and gender violence, and celebrated the resilience of LGBTQ communities of color at our 5th Translatina March, 11th Bushwick Pride and Trans Day of Action.

Supported the victims of LGBTQ hate crimes in our Brooklyn and Queens communities with public marches and rallies joined by hundreds of people.

CIVIL & HUMAN RIGHTS

Mobilized thousands of low-wage workers to help win a $15 minimum wage for workers in New York City, Westchester, and Long Island, an historic victory for nearly 1.5 million working families.

Continued to clean up the exploitative carwash industry with the RWDSU and NYCC, resulting in over $3 million in back wages in workers’ pockets, an estimated $2.00 per hour raise across the industry, and innovative licensing legislation.

Helped to secure a $2.50 increase in the tipped minimum wage for hospitality workers.

Organized with bank workers and our allies to end high-pressure sales tactics that jeopardize the financial health of workers and customers, leading Wells Fargo to announce it would eliminate sales goals for retail bankers.

Organized against Herbalife’s pyramid scheme, filing dozens of official complaints and helping lead to the Federal Trade Commission’s historic settlement, which

required Herbalife to pay $200 million to victims.

After ROSA LUCERO, an Ecuadorian immigrant, completed our rigorous community health worker training program, we helped her find a job teaching parents how to control their children’s asthma. She earns $9 more per hour than in her pre-training job.

Helped over 3,500 individuals enroll in health insurance and navigate the health system, allowing them to access critical medical care.

Helped over 2,200 people, who never before imagined they were eligible, enroll in SNAP benefits to keep food on the table.

Helped 300 families improve their children’s health through a transformative, data-driven program that includes home visits and culturally competent counselling on critical health issues affecting families.

HEALTHY FAMILIES

Secured the construction of a new middle school on 111th Street and Astoria Blvd. The school will add 600 seats to one of the city’s most overcrowded school districts.

Led the way in educating legislators about the Student Safety Act, which now requires the city to release data that shows persistent inequities in school discipline, strengthening our campaign for reform.

Supported our youth member Christine Rodriguez in her role on the Mayor’s Leadership Team on School Climate and

Discipline, where she elevated our priorities, such as limiting police in schools.

Advocated against harsh discipline in schools, laying the

groundwork for the City’s ban on suspensions of students in kindergarten through 2nd grade.

Introduced NYC Department of Education Chancellor Carmen Fariña to our Bushwick-based Student Success Center, which achieves an 85% college acceptance rate. The City plans to open 5 more centers based on MRNY’s model.
