As I ask around, I’m finding businesses – especially freelancers – without a social mediapresence are starting to see signs they’re being left behind. (Don’t let this be you!)

It’s no joke: within two years, your social media presence will be as important as your website.

Sure, a lot of marketers and business people have tried dismissing social media as a fad thatwill eventually just go away. But, these are the same curmudgeons who made similar predictionsabout putting up a business website – and look where that got them.

In reality, social media is becoming deeper and deeper integrated into the entire Internet. Themajor search engines are now even using Twitter links, Facebook “Likes,” and other social mediabuzz to determine where a particular page will show up in search engine rankings. It seems likeevery week news breaks on a new way that social media is being integrated into our lives.

Even then, what makes social media relevant to business?

For one, a large majority of consumers are social media users. 82% of the U.S. teen and adultpopulation use social media, according to The Faces Of Social Media, a 2010 study fromKnowledge Networks and MediaPost Communication. And, that is 69% growth over 2009 – sowe’re quickly getting closer to 100% of Internet users being on social media.

And, while there are some age and gender trends (teens, for example, are the heaviest users),the demographics of social media cover the entire spectrum.

And power users – about one in four teen and adult Internet users, or 20% of the total U.S.population – use social media every day. It’s not uncommon for these heavy users to openFacebook and Twitter in the morning (or apps they use to access these services) and keep themopen all day as their portal into the Internet (move over, Google!).

Beyond this, users expect businesses to be involved in social media, andreward businesses who are.

Even as early as 2008, research by Boston-based consulting firm Cone found that 93% ofAmericans believed a company should have a presence in social media. And, 56% believedcompanies provide a better service by interacting with customers through social media.

Make no mistake, social media has already become a business advantage.

The Faces Of Social Media study found 15% of U.S. social media users – or 30 million people– said they’re more willing to buy from brands they can find in social media.

25% – or 50 million people – said they’re morelikely to engage with a brand (such as visit theirwebsite) based on their social media presence.

And, this is just self-reported data – the realnumbers are likely much higher. After all, Iknow I’m not a minority in checking out acompany’s article, blog post, or web pageafter they mentioned it on Facebook or Twitter– and I don’t think twice about it. I’m sure manyusers are just like me.

Billions are being spent on social media – andit’s increasing fast.

Smart businesses have quickly jumped on the social media bandwagon, and arespending in earnest to attract social mediausers as customers.

Total spending on advertising across socialmedia networks was $1.40 billion in 2009,and should come in around $1.68 billion in2010 according to eMarketer. In 2011, socialmedia advertising spending is expected tocross the $2 billion threshold. (30% growth intwo years!) And, that’s just for advertising.

Total social media spending – including employees, freelancers, consultants, and services –could be dramatically more as companies throw their weight behind social media initiatives.

At this point, we’ve found consultants making $10,000 a day simply to teach social media tocorporate executives. There’s no guarantee you can make this much – yet figures like thesemake it clear that the money being spent on social media is tremendous. (Of course, half thatwould still be a good day for most of us!)

All the numbers are well and good – and provide significant PROOF on the growth of social media – but what’s going on at the ground level?

How a busted guitar and a YouTube video smashed United Airlines’ reputation

On March 31st, 2008, musician Dave Carroll and his band Sons of Maxwell were flying onUnited Airlines from Halifax, Nova Scotia, to Omaha, Nebraska, via Chicago. While waiting toget off their plane in Chicago, the passenger in the row behind them looked out the window andsuddenly cried out …

“My goodness, they’re throwing guitars out there!”

To make a long story short, Carroll’s $3,500 Taylor guitar was broken. Every United employeehe talked to for a full nine months passed the buck and refused to take responsibility. They usedevery rule and regulation in the book to pin it on Carroll, even though their employees werewitnessed throwing the guitars.

Finally, Carroll realized he was in a fight he couldn’t win. The system was stacked against him.So, he went to one place he had real power …

He wrote a song and made a YouTube video. Carroll sang his story and played his broken guitarwhile actors performed a ‘dramatic reinterpretation’ of the United Ground Crew tossing musicalinstruments around:

Carroll posted his “United Breaks Guitars” video on YouTube on July 6, 2009. CBC Newsreported it received 150,000 hits its first day. Within four days, the video had been watched halfa million times. And, by the time Carroll released a second YouTube video less than two monthslater, Canada’s National Post newspaper reported that his first video had been viewed over fivemillion times.

A quick look at the YouTube video stats show “United Breaks Guitars” has been viewed morethan 9.7 million times as of January 2011:

Not only that, it’s been featured on Time.com, MSN.com, and about 249,000 other web pages,according to a recent Google search:

Along the way, United offered payment to fix the guitar, which Carroll declined and asked themto give to charity instead. Though it’s important to note, United only responded to Carroll’scomplaint AFTER he started exposing their customer service hijinks to millions of viewers onYouTube and getting coverage in major media outlets.

So, why do I include United’s story of social media disaster?

Well, before we get into how to use social media right (and how that can lead to four streamsof income!), I think it’s worth looking at the fundamental power of social media to spread a

message. And, the United story is the perfect demonstration of a message spreading likewildfire through social media.

Further, the United story sheds light on another important truth – users are in charge in socialmedia. If one user creates something that other users like, it spreads. Fast. If a customer istreated poorly and they take to YouTube or another network, soon this negative message is worldwide.

“United Breaks Guitars” was a huge PRdebacle for United Airlines, and likely costthem quite a few musicians as customers.After all, while all airlines may handle yourbaggage poorly, the next time you’re booking aflight (as a musician) and thinking aboutbringing along your guitar, you won’t be able tokeep yourself from humming the song “UnitedBreaks Guitars.” Heck, I’m even rethinkingflying United, with or without a guitar!

(PR wasn’t the only problem United faced fromCarroll’s video, either. Their already-strugglingstock even dropped 10% in the days followingthe release of the video. This represented a$180 million decrease in the value of Unitedas a company. It’s hard to say how connectedthese were, though it’s likely the video had atleast some impact.)

This brings home an important point. In oursocial, connected world, every customerinteraction is critical. Whether your businesshas a social media presence or not, socialmedia can make an impact. One bad story,told in a creative way, can act like millions ofdollars worth of attack ads run against you intraditional media. But, the user pays nothing –they just share it through social media.

Mona was handcuffed and charged with a misdemeanor crime, even as thousands uponthousands of angry Comcast customers cheered.

A couple of months later, in October 2007, AdvertisingAge columnist Bob Garfield launched thewebsite ComcastMustDie.com. Touting Shaw’s story, along with his own bad customer serviceexperience, Garfield launched what he controversially called “The Comcast Jihad.” Within twoweeks, his site had 680 comments Garfield reported as “expressing abject hatred toward acable company.”
