Believed to dwell in the spiritual kingdom along with earth spirits,

trolls and goblins, dragons are a modern-day subject of magic and ritual. Europeans have been casting fire magic to call

on the power and protection of dragons for centuries, their secrets having been passed down over generations. Today dragon magic is especially popular in Scandinavia, where it’s practised by Norse pagans at

festivals such as Winter Nights, Halloween and on the winter solstice on 21 December, when dragons are asked for blessings.

To perform dragon magic, first you need to create an altar to use for rituals and spells. Adornments for your altar will include either a model dragon (dragon-making kits are available from amazon.co.uk) or a picture of a dragon, plus red or gold candles and a dragon’s blood incense stick

your dragon. In Norse tradition, dragons guarded treasures such as gold.

TImINgDo this spell after dark, the traditional time

(available from New Age shops). These sticks are scented with resin from the Dracaena plant and increase the potency of spells. Customise your altar by adding the elements for each of the spells in the ‘Make Magic Happen’ section (right).

Before you cast a spell, light your red and gold candles and incense and sit in front of your altar. Look into the flames and imagine a dragon you can call on any time for protection and strength.

You can also sit at your altar and light your incense and candles whenever you wish to strengthen your connection with dragons.

These spells are inspired by my studies of Scandinavian dragon magic and are best performed at dawn or sunset, when the sky is ablaze with the magnificent red and golden colours of dragons. Perform your spells on a Tuesday – this is the day associated with mars, the god of fire creatures, as well as being dragon ritual day in norse mythology.

Invest in a dragon’s eggDragon’s eggs are crystals made from amethyst, rose quartz or clear quartz in the shape of an egg (available from most new age shops).

carry the egg in your pocket, pop one in your bra or keep it in a drawstring bag. You can also leave one near your front door to keep away harm and harness a positive energy in your home.

When you’re involved in a conflict and in need of support, hold the egg in your hand then call on your dragon out loud or in your head. Visualise it flying towards you, surrounded by red and gold light and breathing fire, scorching all the things you feel are against you right now.

for love magic, on six consecutive nights to represent freya, the Norse love goddess of dragon mythology. remember to start on tuesday, which is dragon day.

ThE sPELLOpen the map and place it on your altar with a circle of six candles behind it.

On the first night, put the model dragon in the centre of the map and say out loud:

‘Dragon, call love for me, from far or near, over land or sea, over hill and plain, that there will come to me a lover new whom I’ll hold dear. Dragon, with passion make him sear, that I will know love again.’

Light each of the candles from left to right to attract positive energy and say out loud:

‘Dragon, release your blazing fire, grant me what I most desire – a lover new who will be true. Dragon, fly on your wings of gold, bring me a love who is brave and bold.’

Scatter the pins over the map and say out loud:

‘Near and far over land and sea, bring a lover true to me. As pin to magnet may they be drawn, a faithful love from night to morn.’

Circle the magnet clockwise, again for positive energy, over the map, collecting all the pins to represent the dragon flying over the map finding your lover. Then say out loud:

‘Dragon, you call love to me, as pin to magnet will we be. Joined as one eternally, dragon soon let me them see.’

Put the first offering of an earring or gold ring in front of the first left-hand candle and say out loud:

‘Dragon I give you gold for gold, let my happy-ever-after now unfold.’

Blow out the candles one by one, saying:

‘Dragon flare, now begin, that lasting love you for me win. Do not wait nor hesitate, but carry my love to me for I cannot wait.’

Put the pins and magnet back in the box and place it on the centre of the map with the dragon next to it. This will allow its energies to permeate the pins, which represent the attracting of love.

On the second night repeat the spell, lighting the first, then the second candle, moving in a clockwise direction. Then add the second earring or ring in front of the second candle.

On the third night light three candles in the same order, and add the third earring or ring. Continue until the final night, when you light all six candles and add the sixth earring or ring. Let all six candles burn down safely, and then wait for your lover to appear.

aSking FOR aBUnDance This is a rune ritual to help you hold on to your money and improve your finances.

YOU WILL NEED❋ Nine gold-coloured coins ❋ three red candles ❋ A thin-bladed screwdriver or

pen, for engraving the candles❋ A set of runes (these are

available from most New Age shops). runes are symbols used for divination and spellcasting in Norse magic

BaniShing negaTiViTYcast this spell if someone at work is undermining you or being difficult. repeat it whenever you feel there’s a threat from a colleague.

ThE sPELLFind a quiet place in front of your altar, close your eyes and relax.

Next, visualise a dragon and call upon its energy by saying out loud:

‘Give me protection against negativity, malice or hostility at work.’

Write the name of the person whose negativity is affecting you on a piece of paper and place it under the dragon on your altar.

Say out loud:

‘I have the power of the dragon within me and I am invincible.’

pROTecTing YOURSeLFcast this spell when you feel under threat from negative people. You can perform it indoors in front of your altar, or outdoors – all you need is your dragon model and a pen and paper. cast it for two consecutive nights to double its potency.

ThE sPELLFind a peaceful spot with your model or sit quietly in front of your altar. Now say out loud:

‘Give me protection against negativity, malice or hostility at work.’

Write the name of the person who’s hurting you on a piece of paper and place it underneath your dragon – placed in front of you if you’re outdoors, or under the model on your altar. Say out loud:

‘I have the power of the dragon within me and I am invincible.’

TO gOOD heaLThYou can cast this spell for yourself or on behalf of someone who is ill.

YOU WILL NEED❋ Golden jewellery that represents you.

if you’re doing this spell on behalf of someone else who is unwell, you’ll need a picture of them and will need to name the person and their illness.

❋ A red candle❋ An incense stick

TImINgCast this spell at sunrise, a time that signifies new beginnings and symbolises a new era of good health.

ThE sPELLplace the item that represents you in the middle of your altar. Light the candle and call your dragon, saying:

‘You are welcome here. i entreat you, wondrous golden dragon, guardian of all treasures, to make my health golden.’

Light the incense stick with the candle flame and write in the air over the jewellery the words ‘good health’ to affirm your intention. pass the gold jewellery nine times clockwise around the candle to increase the power of the spell, then say out loud:

‘Be filled with the power of the dragon that i may succeed in good health by [say the time you want it by]. Fly and return with my wishes fulfilled, i ask. This is your task.’

Leave the candle and incense to burn down, but don’t leave it unattended. Wear the jewellery or pop it in a red drawstring bag (to represent the strength of a dragon flame). Take it out and hold it whenever you feel your health could do with a boost.

❋ A gold-coloured pot or dish

TImINgDo this spell on three consecutive mornings at sunrise, when the sky is red and gold. Prosperity magic is traditionally cast in the morning to allow the energies of the day to help finances increase.

ThE sPELLSay out loud:

‘i call to me dragon fire, that

i release at my desire. Prosperity, grow more and more, every day greater than before. dragon, i ask this shall be done, that into my life may fortune come.’

Make a triangle of the coins around the model dragon, while saying out loud as you lay each coin in place:

‘dragon, you guard this precious gold, let prosperity

in my life unfold.’

place the candles around the coins in a circle. Use the screwdriver or pen to etch the Fehu rune symbol (below) into each of the candles, then light them individually.

next, put the Fehu rune within the circle of coins

to release the power of this prosperity rune into your life. Blow out the candles in the same order as you lit them, to send their power into the cosmos, and repeat these words out loud:

‘dragon, you guard this precious gold, let prosperity in my life unfold.’

add the coins to the gold-coloured pot or dish, which can be placed anywhere near to hand,

while you say out loud:

‘Speculate, accumulate, wealth cannot wait but must unfold. dragon, with me share your gold.’

Repeat the spell for the following two mornings. On the last day, say out loud:

‘The dragon’s treasure comes more and more, money i attract by the score – and i will keep it. dragon, i thank you.’

place the pot and the dragon on your altar or in a place where you can see them to act as a reminder of money coming your way. Do this for as long as you feel comfortable or until your finances change for the better.
