How do we make education relevant so that it resonates with children, elevates them and inspires them to see the world through a different lens?

If we want our kids to be creative, innovative and experimental, we need to do more than foster their ambition. We need to make sure they develop their own methods of problem solving while pursuing original and meaningful ideas.

Helping children reach their creative potential is our goal in Art Center for Kids.

It’s a goal that demands a different approach —one that is adventurous, engaging and chal-lenging. To that end, we provide students with the tools they need to explore new solutions and skills that give them confidence in their creative ability.

Here in Art Center for Kids, we motivate students to discover their inspiration and express themselves in new ways. Our classes mirror the many disciplines taught at Art Center and are taught by members of the College’s community—faculty, alumni, undergraduate and graduate students—who encourage new ways of thinking, seeing and doing.

Art Center for Kids is open to students in grades 4–8 at the College’s Hillside and South campuses in Pasadena.

We believe an art and design education can improve children’s lives in many ways—from promoting collaboration to inspiring career goals—but no benefit is more important than simply helping them see that they can turn the ordinary into the extraordinary.

Fostering that belief is the mission of Art Center for Kids.

About the Artist

born in Los Angeles, Art Center alumnus Ronald J. llanos has taught in Art Center’s Public Programs for the past 10 years.

Llanos’ work depicts everyday moments of life in L.A., whether it’s street vendors selling their wares in downtown’s Toy District or an homage to Manet’s Bar at the Folies Bergères via Hot Dog on a Stick. “I was inspired by artists like George bellows and John French Sloan but also by Looney Tunes cartoons from the ’40s,” says Llanos, who’s teaching Illustration for Art Center for Kids’ Summer 2013 term.

Sunday, the work on this catalog’s cover, is part of Llanos’ ongoing “brown World” series, which refers both to his choice of paper stock as well as the Latino community he chronicles. “I lived in Huntington Park for the first three years of my life, which I can still vividly recall,” says Llanos. “It all left an impression on me.”

Llanos’ has shown at venues like Wax Poetic, Cactus Gallery and Ghettogloss. And last year, Los Angeles Metro unveiled his most ambitious project to date: Ephemeral Views: A Visual Essay. The public work—24 large-scale mosaic panels that depict L.A. street life—is seen daily by thousands of commuters passing through Metro’s Expo/Western station. ronaldjllanos.com
