    ?Make A Difference is an amazing programme designed and run by young

    adults who recruit other young people, outstanding college students like

    themselves, to mentor and teach children who haven t had the same chances

    in life as many of the mentors have had. These young volunteers understand

    and believe in something very simple, that all children, regardless of their

    circumstances, deserve the same chance to get educated and to build

    productive and successful lives? And let me tell you, this work is amazing, and

    it is vitally important.?

    M ESSAGE

    2014 was a year of great progress at Make A Dif ference, wit h big strides in our shif t towards a longer

    term goal of achieving bett er adult outcomes for children in shelters across India. Rizwan Tayabali

    joined us ful l time as CEO, bringing global expert ise to help restructure both operations, impact and

    build a long-term pl atf orm for us to tackle outcomes on a systemic scale.

    We saw huge changes internall y as we completed our t ransit ion to 'One Big MAD' wit h collaborati ve

    teams and cross-functional Directors, and restructured operations at national t eam level to ensure that

    Programme teams working directl y wi th children have the pr imary say in what we do and how. We

    maintained our focus on scaling quality of impact rather than reach, expanding our Ed Support

    Programme from Engli sh into support for Science, Math and Engli sh, and scaling up our Propel and

    Discover Programmes to reach more of the chil dren we work wi th. We also grew our number of

    volunt eers per child to improve qualit y of impact and build stronger relationships, and set up a

    dedicated research team to help us baseline current outcomes.

    As part of our new strategy to leverage industry best practi ces, we pil oted our f irst major partnership

    with other expert organisations, adapting Dream A Dream's 'arc of t ransformation' for our Dream Camps

    wit h great success on the ground, while working wit h others like tGELF to develop l earning modules that

    wil l be pil oted this year. We also invested much time and eff ort i n increasing operational effectiveness

    and thus cost eff iciencies, pioneering the use of Agile planning and decision-making methodologies in

    organisational delivery. In tandem with long term roadmapping, we now have roll ing plans that f it into a

    much bigger picture, all owing all stakeholders to see where we are going and how we plan to get t here

    over the next 25 years. Finally, we successfull y did away wi th traditional control mechanisms as a driver

    of quali ty, and instead drove adoption of better working practices through a focus on developmental

    growt h, higher goal congruence and strengthening cultural bonds across teams and cit ies.

    The changes and new approaches have already started to pay dividends. Over the year we were invited

    to join the Global Agenda Council for Education, won a number of awards including eNGO and best

    website awards, but most encouraging of all was being the top ranked Non-Prof it and the only one to be

    make the Top 100 best places to work in India in the Great Place to Work Instit ute's 2015 annual survey.

    Our prior ity for 2015 is to start improving internal knowledge sharing and transfer of regional best

    practi ces, expand our team and range of empowerment programmes to cover all crit ical int ervention

    points, particularly Lif e Skil ls, Emotional Health, Transit ion Readiness and After-Care, and buil d capacity

    among Fellows and Volunteers. Maintaining our f ocus on increasing investment and care for children

    remains our priori ty, and wit h your support , we shall continue to strive for bet ter outcomes.

    WHO WE ARE

    Make A Dif ference (MAD) is

    a youth driven, non-profi t

    organisat ion working to

    ensure equitable outcomes

    for children in orphanages

    and street shelt ers.

    Registered as a non-prof it in 2006,

    Make A Dif ference reaches out to over

    4,250 children in 81 shelters across 23

    cities in India, through a highly

    eff icient 4,300 strong volunteer

    network.

    Volunteers commit a year and spend

    between 2 and 10 hours every week

    mentoring, teaching and interacting

    with children in order to ensure that

    they get t he support and care they

    need during childhood.

    Why we exist

    According to UNICEF, India is home to the largest child population in t he worl d, wi th 400m chil dren that

    include an est imated 31m orphans, and nearly 176m of these are considered t o be in need of care and

    protect ion. Chil dren at r isk in India, whether orphaned and otherw ise, of ten end up in shelt ers, which

    are under resourced and oft en focused more on basic needs than eit her chil dcare or longer-t erm

    progression. The result is that both quali ty of l if e and adult outcomes for children in this demographic

    are very poor, leading t o cycles of poverty and abandonment. Wit h inadequate educat ional

    quali f icati ons, l if e skil ls, fi nancial or emotional support to cope outside these instit utions; children who

    have grown up in shelters often take up menial j obs, or get t rapped into alcoholi sm, violence, drug

    abuse, prosti tuti on or traff icking. Solut ions of ten struggle wi th the scale of the problem, and are

    commonly single dimensional or isolated. This is compounded by the fact that l it t le useful data exists

    because it has histor ically been dif f icult to track what happens to chil dren af ter they leave shelt ers.

    Make A Dif ference exists to address these chal lenges on both a local and systemi c scale.

    and support systems to ensure that t hey f louri sh.

    92 of children in shelter homes typically drop out of school by the age of

    18. However, we have reversed the trend for those who have been through

    our programs, and more than 90 of the children we work with have

    continued into higher education post 18.

    SOLUTIONS

    Through our core programmes,

    Ed Support, Discover, Propel

    and

    Dream

    Camps

    , Make a Difference creates a support system and an emotional safe

    space for children in shelters by ensuring every child has at least 3 adults

    who care for them, understand them and who they can reach out to when

    they feel overwhelmed.

    Children have access to

    trained mentors

    for a minimum of 2 hours a week

    from the age of 10 to 18. Mentors spend time getting to know children and

    developing a customized plan for each child. This plan includes not just

    academic support but also life skills, personal discovery, art, music and

    language lessons delivered by t eams of volunt eers on the ground.

    Depending on the age and need of the chil d, Make A Dif ference?s

    programmes include career awareness activit ies, helping them identi fy their

    career path and supporting their

    transition

    to further education with both

    placement support and funding when required.

    We also work closely with the shelter they are living in to ensure their

    basic

    needs

    are taken care of and interact with their teachers to understand their

    developmental needs.

    The most powerful feature of our solution is that by the time the child comes

    out of the shelter home they already have strong relationships and bonds

    with at least

    Make A Difference is one of the first organisations in India to have developed

    a fully sustainable volunteer-based delivery model. We have mobilized over

    16,000 young leaders to volunteer with children since 2006.

    At Make A Dif ference (MAD), we ensure that children get the best of the city?s young leaders and they

    INNOVATION

    MAD-App is a one-of-a-kind internall y developed web and mobile volunteer

    management app designed to empower communities to self -mobil ize. It

    provides real-t ime information on every one of our acti vit ies on the ground,

    and is used to drive quali ty standards wit hin the organisation. It has been

    showcased in forums including the Harvard Kennedy School of Government .

    Propel-App, is a dedicated modul e within MAD-App, which is used to manage

    classes and sessions for students in higher secondary classes (11th and 12th

    Grade). This appl icat ion helps Propel Fellows assign students to a 'Wingman'

    and helps manage and t rack the Wingman Programme.

    We are an award winning NGO and one of the sector leaders in the use of cutting

    edge technology. With just 21 full time employees designing and managing

    programmes across 23 cities, we leverage technology to stay lean and drive

    transparency, effectiveness, quality and performance across our operations.

    This is an int ernal survey tool t hat i s used by al l volunteers to record how

    supported they are feeling wi thin MAD. We run this survey twi ce a year, and

    this technology helps us understand how each vert ical or cit y is functioning. It

    also has the abil it y to help us analyze al l data coll ected to gain insights.

    DONUT is one of the biggest off line Crowd-Funding Platf orms in the country.

    This mobile app has revolutionized financial transparency at MAD by

    completely eliminating the need for paper receipts for personal donations

    received, as it issues E-receipts directl y to the donor as soon as a donati on is

    made. MAD thus receives and is able to t rack real t ime data on funds raised.

    We invest significantly in building a culture that ensures our team members

    enjoy and learn from being part of a high functioning collective, because we

    realize that the right culture is the best driver of passion, care, ethics, quality

    and professionalism in the delivery of outcomes.

    GREAT PLACE TO WORK

    A major aspect of our success has lain in breaking away from the standard

    approach of simply copying and adapting commercial norms, and instead in

    designing and developing an organisation that is specifically built for

    impact, outcomes and the non-profit sector.

    In 2015 Make A Diff erence was the only non-prof it to rank in the

    GPTW Institute's Top 100 Great Places

    to Work

    , and was the top ranked Non prof it in India. A people-f irst f ocus, wit h a priorit y on

    empowerment and enablement is a major reason why Make A Dif ference is consistent ly felt by our

    workforce to be a great pl ace to work. What makes this particularly relevant is that beyond t raditional

    monitoring systems, the reali ty is that workforce passion, commitment and t rust are the biggest drivers

    of continui ty and quali ty assurance on ground.

    We've learnt that for the best impact results, team members must also feel they are receiving

    Aanandhabhalajy, from Pollachi, joined The Sevashram Trust, Coimbator

    the 10th grade. He struggled through the next couple of years, but wit h

    help from Make A Dif ference, Aanandhabhalajy passed out of Gopal Naid

    School wit h fly ing colours. He is now pursuing Diploma in Tools and Dye

    GD Technical Training Instit ute (GTTI), Coimbatore.

    Rajat

    Rajat, from a shelt er called Arya was a part of the Ed Support and Discover project. He had

    lost all contact wit h his family and had been disowned by his relatives. When he left the

    shelter home, he opted for odd jobs, right from distributing pamphlets to cleaning tables in

    restaurants so as to be able to pay rent for his room and manage his expenses. With the help

    of Make A Dif ference, despite the hardships he faced, he managed to maintain the necessary

    attendance in college. In addit ion t o attending college, he has also managed to help younger

    children in his shelt er home prepare for their board exams. Last year, he was accepted into

    The Delhi University for Poli ti cal Science. Complet ing the cycle of transformation, he recentl y

    joined MAD's Propel verti cal to help ot hers that have gone through a simi lar experience.

    Two of our students from a child care center Ashiana in Panchkula distri ct, Haryana

    have secured a CGPA of 10 (95% or higher) in their board exams conducted by the

    Central Board of Secondary Education (?CBSE?). Suni l aged 16 and Blessey aged 17

    have brought laurels to thei r school Blue Bird High School. Sunil wishes to become

    an engineer while Blessey is pursuing her dreams of studying medicine and taking

    up nursing.

    We design for and monitor impact on both macro and micro levels and

    develop our programmes specifically to target the impact we want. We see

    macro indicators as those that are indicative of the long term quality of life

    we aspire for the children we work with, and micro indicators as those which

    we expect will add up to effect that change.

    We are working on scalable models and holisti c soluti ons that i n the longer term wi ll both aim

    to increase the support systems available to abandoned children and also improve the way

    shelters are managed and run.

    To ensure that we get these right, we are investing significantly in field research to test and

    validate sector assumptions around long term outcomes and to allow us to better prioritise

    the int erventi ons we del iver. Through our in-house Problem Def ini t ion and Research Team,

    we aim t o understand the ef fects of insti tut ionali zati on on longer term l if e outcomes of

    children. By studying the lives of 35 year old adults who grew up in institutionalized

    environments across the country, the team aims to identify the real drivers behind negative

    outcomes and create sustainable and ef fect ive soluti ons to address them.

    We address and track indicators at different stages up to the age of 28, starting with early

    The Ed Support Programme continues to evolve based on our experiences on the field. Our most signif ican

    strategic decision for the next year is to identif y and implement a curriculum designed to improve

    foundati onal li teracy and numeracy in children by grade 5. We also plan to invest in upskil ling and

    empowering our volunteers to incorporate di f ferentiated and acti vit y based teaching practi ces in all Ed

    Support classes, thereby improving the quali ty of support children receive, and eventually aid them in

    performing better in their schools.

    Why Ed Support?

    One of the biggest chall enges faced by children in shelter homes is that of educational inequit y. The schoo

    and shelter system are in most cases severely under-resourced to provide the kind of after school

    educati onal support required for children to f louri sh. The care and one-on-one att ention that children from

    regular homes receive f rom their parents or guardians is also missing for children in shelters. This result s in

    low motivation, poor academic performance, high dropout rates, lack of positive role models and an ever

    widening gap between what a child knows and what they should know f or their age.

    How Ed Support works

    Ed Support is a unique programme designed to ensure children in shelter homes receive the quality of

    support and one-on-one att ention required to bridge learning gaps and enable them to clear grade 10 and

    pursue higher education. The school curriculum is delivered by hi gh potent ial volunteers who are recruited

    provided with professional t eacher training and empowered to be both teachers and posit ive role models.

    The programme supports children from grade 5 to grade 10 and is implemented wi th periodic tracking of

    each child?s progress and regular impact measurement through standardized tests. An average class size of

    8 students is supported by 2 teaching volunteers who commit to classes for a period of one academic year

    PROGRAM M ES

    "The Discover Programme's purpose is to ensure that a child is able to make informed decisions in l if e and

    have the self confidence to make those decisions. This is done t hrough experiential learning workshops on

    li fe skil ls, self awareness and exposure to real world chall enges. I have been a part of the project f or over two

    years now and I believe Discover can empower the child to become a responsible and happy individual. It has

    Over the next f ew years, we plan to expand our scope to focus more on li fe skil ls and emotional health,

    from practicalit ies such as social skil ls, computer skill s and f inancial l it eracy to personal resilience and

    adaptiveness. We also plan to create a more holisti c platform through which children in shelters gain

    access to new worldviews regarding education and careers as well as other l if e choices. Skil ls and

    self -belief, along with the exposure being provided wil l enable them to make practical l if e choices post

    school, and be better equipped to see those choices through to fruit ion in t he long term.

    Why Discover?

    At MAD, we believe that what a person becomes should not be the result of where they grew up or their

    f inancial background, but what their dreams are and what their t rue passion is. Through our work wit h

    children in shelters we found that as they progressed through school , there was a marked lack of awarenes

    and confidence about varied career and li fe choices. Discover has therefore been designed to provide

    children in shelter homes wit h the exposure and skil ls to bui ld their confidence and decision making abil it

    whil e also support ing their career growth by increasing their i nterest in academia and progression t hrough

    experiential learning.

    How Discover works

    The Discover Programme works with children f rom 7th to 10th grade. It f ocuses on providing children wit h

    exposure to dif ferent career opt ions through an experience-based approach, helping them f ind t heir area o

    interest t hrough init ial prof il ing, and explore it t hrough experient ial workshops and activit ies. Through its

    dedicated team of Fellows and volunteers, the programme organizes workshops either w ithin t he shelter

    home or via field visits and educational activit ies giving children an immersive experience of higher

    education and career opportunit ies. Children we have worked wit h across the country now want to explore

    careers as varied as teachers, arti sts, engineers, fashion technologists and even robot designers.

    "Ini t ial ly when I started at MAD, as a PR intern, I had no child connect. I never taught, so I didn't empathize

    much wit h the children l iving in shelter homes. I was about to discontinue after gett ing my volunteer

    certif icate. But during the fi rst dream camp I was assigned to four children as their mentor was absent. The

    responsibi li ty was sudden, uncalled and huge. But by the end of it , it changed my mind and I decided t o stay

    back in MAD for those four children who changed my lif e. I did not want to be the person abandoning them."

    In the coming years, the focus wil l be on growing the qualit y of impact of Dream Camps by improving both

    volunt eer training and del ivery for plenaries and making the execution of Dream Camps more systemati c

    and standardized. Learnings from the previous year are also driving some changes to the design of how the

    camps are facili tated and the acti vit ies are structured to ensure that we are able to consistent ly t arget all

    three goals of connecti ng with dreams, providing exposure to new experiences and making the camps a fu

    and memorable holiday experience for children. Finally we aim to increase the li nkages between ongoing

    Discover activit ies and the annual Dream Camps so that the two complement each other better wi th better

    continui ty across the year.

    DREAM CAMP

    Why Dream Camps?

    Insti tut ionalization typically results in children growing up in insular environments where they rarely get to

    experience the unfamil iar. When they leave the shelter, they struggle to cope with t he range of new

    challenges and experiences that inevi tably come their way, and for many this can cripple their self -belief

    and thus longer term outcomes. Dreaming about the future is also often missing f rom children who live

    with emotional traumas, and wit hout markers for the future, there is lit tl e motivation t o invest in acti vit ies

    l ike schooling that have longer term returns. Dream Camps aim to address that sense of hopelessness and

    lack of self -belief by helping children build and connect with their dreams, gain confidence through action

    and exposure to new experiences in a support ive and safe environment, and for a few days, to be f ree from

    the confines of the shelters they grow up in.

    How Dream Camps work

    Dream Camps are a 2-3 day experient ial camp that primarily f ocuses on helpi ng children build and connec

    wit h thei r dreams through a process of self growth and transformation via a tr ied and tested methodology

    call ed the ?arc of t ransformation?which involves four group plenaries. At these sessions, children also build

    self -confidence through exposure to new people, ideas and experiences that are deliberately designed to

    expand their horizons within a safe space. Finally we ensure that Dream camps also act as a recreation

    space for t he child, providing an essential break from the stresses of institutionalization.

    "One of my my chil dren, Kajal is super smart and intends to be a lawyer some day. But, due to her

    "reputation" of being a naughty, dif f icult child, a lot of kids made fun of her and consequently, she didn't

    have too many friends. I did not realize the kind of encouragement I was giving her tacit ly unti l one day her

    mother call ed me up and told me so. Her words were, "Ma'am, my daughter used to feel very disconnected

    and ignored by people, until you came along. She fi nds it very easy to talk to you and since your year with

    her, she truly believes that in a posit ive way she stands out in a crowd. She is more confident that she can be

    a lawyer. But more importantly, she feels like the need to be "accepted" by others is minimal and she needs

    Going forward, we intend t o restructure our existing programs to make them more impactful, scalable an

    complementary as a collecti ve suite of intervent ions. Our primary goal for 2015 is to grow impact for eac

    programme and to increase synchronicit y across the programmes we del iver. We wil l extend Propel into

    pilot after-care programme to create a more systematic platform that supports young people after the

    leave shelters. We also plan to improve our li fe-skil ls curriculum, transition readiness, and stakeholde

    engagement to build a more stable ecosystem post-shelter. Finally we will invest further improving th

    Propel App to enhance Wingman effectiveness.

    Why Propel?

    High school is an important decision point f or all children, but i t is also a crit ical trajectory marker for

    children exiting shelters. For children in shelters, the period is often made worse by the absence of a

    mentor such as an elder sibling or parent who can guide them. Faced with defi cits in l if e-skil ls, academic

    support, career guidance and funding support, children in shelt ers often fall back on familiar career and lif e

    choices. This point at which a child leaves the shelter, usually around high-school, is thus a crucial

    intervention period. Propel evolved from our identif ication of the need to provide strong reinforcement of

    li fe skills, increased exposure to career choices and overall support t o older children at t his stage.

    How Propel works

    Propel is a Mentor Programme focused on 16 to 18 year olds, that equips and support s young people

    exit ing out of shelters at 18 to successfull y make the transit ion into broader society. A "Wingman" is

    assigned to each child in the programme to provide career support, mentoring and guidance. Skil l building

    modules ensure that t he children are better equipped to face the world outside the shelter home. Funding

    support is provided for those who have the passion and motivation but lack financial resources to t urn the

    dream into a reality. Shelter leavers are also supported to access a network of colleges, vocational training

    and job opportunit ies through our t ie-ups and networks. So far, several Propel students have been

    successfull y pl aced int o degree courses in law and engineering at prestigious insti tut ions l ike Bangalore

    Insti tute of Legal Studies (BILS) and Vell ore Insti tute of Technology (VIT).

    One of our focus areas since the t ime of inception has been seeding social change in t he minds of the yout

    of India. Our Leadership x Design (LxD) programme is India's largest Youth Leadership Programme, which

    brings together over 400 young leaders every year f rom across 23 of India's biggest cit ies. Today through

    our Leadership x Design Programme (LxD) we have been able to produce over 1300 high potential l eaders

    who in t he years ahead wi ll be passionate and competent to bring change for the betterment of thei r

    community as they move to greater posit ions of leadership and inf luence in the future.

    The LxD programme consists of a combination of induct ion t raining, ongoing mentorship and a Leadership

    Conferences (LC's) that each Fell ow undergoes. Our 4 day intensive resident ial training is based on

    Stanford?s Design Thinking principle, which is an approach to learning that f ocuses on developing creative

    confidence which inculcates problem solvi ng and leadership skil ls in participants. Instead of merely

    focusing just on ideation, the Design Thinking approach has a positive bias towards on-ground

    implementation. Once our Fellows learn, observe and understand the challenges they are dealing with, the

    become solut ion-dri vers in their own ecosystems, thereby l everaging the benef its of Learning by Doing.

    Training and development is supplemented by an internal user generated knowledge l ibrary call ed HQ, and

    city circles held and organized locally by cit y teams themselves.

    Histor ically our LxD programmes have focused primaril y on our Fellows, but over the next t wo years we

    plan to buil d out our int ernal capacity-buil ding team and scale our LxD programme to reach beyond our

    Fell ows to our ent ire volunteer base. We are also pi loting the use of MOOCs (Massive open onl ine courses)

    and developing custom technologies to aid e-learning and knowledge transfer from generation to

    generation. As part of our drive to ensure conti nuous improvement, we wil l continue to drive eff iciency

    improvements in the delivery of our annual Learning Conferences, and improve learning via the use of City

    Circles.

    How it Works

    2014-15 Engagement Partners

    We first create ownership by catalyzing a core team of volunteer leaders wit hin the sponsor company. Th

    team becomes the epicenter of all our engagement activities. Their primary responsibility is to collectiviz

    and create a community wit hin t he company where everybody chooses a way of giving back based on the

    age, interests, educational background, and time availability. Their options include Child-centric Project

    Technology Projects, Fundraising Campaigns, Mass Awareness Campaigns, and Project Management .

    Post a child sensit ivi ty training session, they then join our regular sessions as support mentors, after whic

    they are enabled to deliver sessions by themselves, and finally to create their own sessions with suppo

    from our dedicated city teams. The whole experience becomes powerful and binding when young busine

    leaders are able to see impact on the ground for t he work they put in.

    BACK-A-THON

    The Backathon is a one of a kind mass

    awareness campaign created by MAD to

    highlight the issue of i ll iteracy. Every year on

    the 8th of September our volunteers across the

    country celebrate World Literacy day by

    gett ing on to the streets of their city and

    walking backwards in masses, representing our

    eff ort t owards pushing back ill iteracy in India.

    Our last Backathon had more than 2000 people

    participate across 19 cit ies.

    MAD WEEK

    MAD week is a campaign we run annually f rom

    1st - 7th November, the anniversary week of

    MAD's registration in 2006. Its signature

    campaign is call ed 'Happiness is contagious'

    where our volunteers across the country step

    out into their community and show their

    grati tude to people who are least appreciated

    such as the t raff ic pol ice, labourers, security

    guards and street vendors through acts of

    kindness.

    Income from fundraising grew by 16% overall. This was fuelled by larger grants from our existing corporat

    partners driven by higher sati sfaction wi th our programmes and employee engagement acti vit ies. Funds

    raised through crowd funding registered a 37% increase, fuelled by bet ter technology and greater reach.

    Over the next year we wil l continue to focus on developing our crowd fundraising capabili ty as part of our

    attempt to engage and enable the communities around our areas of operation.

    allocation of salaries and overheads to proj ects

    based on actual eff ort and time spent on

    delivery model for our projects allows us to be
