INTRODUCTION 6

The Big 12 enters its 19th year as it continues to promote the strength and success of one of the nation’s premier athletic conferences under the direction of third-year commissioner Bob Bowlsby.

TCU and West Virginia joined the league on July 1, 2012 and became the Big 12’s first additions since inception, joining Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Texas and Texas Tech.

With 10 members, the Big 12 remains as the only major conference in the nation to determine its champions in all sports directly on the field of play with a full round-robin schedule.

The Conference’s hard work ethic and strong values have translated to enormous success in its first 18 years. In the fall of 2013, former Texas Tech track and field student-athlete Ifeatu Okafor was named the Big 12’s first NCAA Woman of the Year. Texas became the 12th league volleyball squad to advance to the national semifinals while three teams placed in the top 15 at the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Championships. Big 12 football placed two teams for the sixth time in what was the final season of the BCS with Oklahoma defeating two-time defending national champion Alabama in the Sugar Bowl.

The 2014 winter and spring seasons were just as successful as Oklahoma claimed the Big 12’s first NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship and 14 student-athletes claimed individual national titles. Texas women’s indoor and outdoor track & field, UT men’s swimming & diving, Oklahoma men’s tennis and Oklahoma State men’s golf finished as NCAA runners-up. Baylor softball was one of the last four teams standing at the Women’s College World Series and the Big 12 placed a nation’s-best four baseball squads in the NCAA Super Regionals and three in the College World Series.

Since it began competition in 1996-97, the league can boast of 53 NCAA team titles and 552 individual national championships.

The Big 12 lays claim to five Heisman Trophy winners since 1996 and has had a finalist in 12 of its 18 seasons – tied for the most of any league. Twenty athletes have earned major individual awards in football in the past six campaigns. Overall, more than 1,900 student-athletes have earned All-America recognition in the past seven years alone.

Through its first 18 years, the Big 12 has claimed a team national championship in 17 of the sports it sponsors. The Conference finished the BCS era ranked tied for second with seven appearances in the National Championship Game. League squads combined to lead the nation in women’s basketball attendance 15 consecutive years and the Big 12 is the only conference to surpass the one-million mark in season attendance – doing so six times. In men’s basketball, the league has had seven teams earn NCAA bids twice in the past five years and every coach has guided a team to the NCAA Tournament, including a nation’s-best six coaches that have led teams to the Final Four. During the last 10 years a total of 32 NCAA trophies have been hoisted by Big 12 institutions, with at least one national crown won in all but one year for the Conference, including 17 consecutive seasons.

The Big 12 and its member institutions are committed to a competitive environment where sportsmanship and fair play take center stage. Whether on the field, in the classroom, or within the community, the student-athletes, administrators, coaches and game officials of the Big 12 support the highest ideals in sportsmanship.

National academic accolades have always been strong in the Big 12. Danielle Robinson (Oklahoma) and Sam Acho (Texas) were selected to receive Today’s Top VIII Awards – one of the NCAA’s top honors. It recognizes student-athletes who completed their athletic eligibility during 2010-11 for success on the fields and courts, in the classroom and in the community. In the last three seasons, four student-athletes were recipients of the NCAA Elite 89 Award with pitcher John Curtiss (Texas) picking up the latest honor in the spring of 2014. The honor showcases individuals who have reached the pinnacle of competition at the national championship level, while also achieving the highest academic standard among their peers.

In its short history, the Big 12 has had 571 Academic All-America recipients, averaging more than 30 each season. Big 12 student-athletes have shown commitment to their studies by earning numerous individual academic recognitions. Eleven times in the past nine years a league athlete has garnered the top academic honor for their respective sport, including Frances Silva (West Virginia) for soccer and Gabe Ikard (Oklahoma) for football in 2013.

The Big 12 can take pride in other stories that combine on and off the field success. Patience Knight (Texas Tech) was the recipient of the Honda Inspiration Award in 2008, given to an outstanding female college athlete who overcomes adversity to excel in her sport. She was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in 2007, but rebounded to win All-America honors at the NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championships. Oklahoma State women’s basketball was the inaugural recipient of the “Together We R” Team Award in 2012, recognizing programs that have strived to succeed in the face of adversity. Following a devastating tornado south of Oklahoma City just before the Big 12 Baseball Championship in 2013, several league baseball teams along with other student-athletes, coaches and former Conference players contributed help in a variety of ways. Plus, the Conference contributed $200,000 to the relief efforts.

Competitive excellence, scholarship and sportsmanship are all equal components of the Big 12 philosophy. All-Big 12 teams and Academic All-Big 12 squads are recognized for each sport at the end of their respective seasons. At the end of each academic year, the Conference honors its top male and female student-athletes with the Big 12 Athlete of the Year and Big 12 Sportsperson of the Year awards.

Institutions can also nominate student-athletes for the prestigious Dr. Prentice Gautt Postgraduate Scholarships. A total of 341 scholars have received nearly $2.3 million in postgraduate financial aid through the first 18 years of the program.

The Big 12 sponsors 23 sports. Men’s squads include baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, swimming & diving, tennis and wrestling. Women’s teams are fielded in basketball, cross country, equestrian, golf, gymnastics, indoor track & field, outdoor track & field, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis and volleyball.

Big 12 institutions create a league that encompasses five states and nearly 38 million people. Nearly 5,000 student-athletes from across the United States and around the World compete annually in the sports sponsored by the Conference.

The Conference conducts postseason championships for 20 of its 23 sports. Each championship helps to determine teams and/or individuals that will represent the Conference in national postseason competition.

In its first 18 years, the Big 12 has distributed more than $2.04 billion to its member institutions, including a record $220.1 million in 2013-14. The Conference office is headquartered in Irving, Texas.

COACHING STAFF 7

Now in his third season at the helm of the Oklahoma soccer program, head coach Matt Potter has already begun to see his vision for the team take shape. A proven leader and builder of successful programs, Potter arrived at OU in December 2011 with the goal of positioning the Sooners as one of the nation’s elite soccer teams.

In his second season as head coach, the Sooners finished with a 4-13-1 record, recording shutouts in all four wins and battling to a 1-1 tie at Utah. Potter also helped guide two freshmen to exceptional seasons with midfielders Jemma Cota and Paige Jacobs earning selections to the All-Big 12 Newcomer team.

Potter led Oklahoma to a 7-9-4 record in his first season as head coach, the most by a rookie head coach in Sooner history. Potter’s squad also qualified to the program’s third consecutive Big 12 tournament, another first for the program. Perhaps one of the crowning moments of the season for his team was a 1-0 upset win over in-state rival and then-No. 3 ranked Oklahoma State in Norman on Sept. 7, 2012.

In addition to the achievements of the team as a whole, Potter’s guidance led to multiple individuals to successful seasons. Senior forward Renae Cuellar had a breakout season at OU after transferring from Arizona. Cuellar was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year, the first Sooner in program history to earn the title. Cuellar was also named to the NCAA Division I All-Central Region first team by the National Soccer Coaches’ Association of America (NSCAA) and captured first All-Big 12 and Big 12 All-Newcomer team honors.

A hallmark of any Potter-led team is achievement in the classroom as well as on the field, and the 2012 Sooners followed suit under his leadership. The squad earned Team Academic Award Recognition from the NSCAA, carrying a team grade point average of 3.25. In addition, senior Katharine Nutman earned 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 7 Women’s Soccer first team honors from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Prior to his arrival at Oklahoma, Potter established Washington State’s program into one of the Pac-12’s elite with a school record 88 wins (88-69-26 overall) at the helm, including five double-digit win seasons and three appearances in the NCAA tournament. The Cougars advanced into the second round of the NCAA tournament in 2011 and 2009. Prior to his arrival, Washington State advanced to three NCAA tournaments since the program’s inception in 1989.

While coaching 32 all-conference selections and seven players that have taken part of national team camps or competitions at Washington State, the program’s success in the classroom did not go unnoticed during Potter’s tenure. He has helped mentor 108 student-athletes that have earned academic all-conference accolades and Washington State received the NSCAA Team Academic Award in 2011, marking the seventh time the program earned the honor under Potter.

Potter took leadership of the Cougar program in July of 2003, just a few months after being named an assistant in February. Potter was 6-11-2 in his first season after taking over for Dan Tobias, who took the head coaching job at the University of Arizona in 2003. Following his debut season, Potter’s Cougar teams rattled off six straight winning seasons and the 2006 squad tied a program record with 10 shutouts.

Under Potter’s leadership in 2011, Washington State returned to the big dance and advanced to the second round for the second time in the last three years. The Cougars posted a 12-7-4 overall record and a fourth-place finish in the Pac-12 with a program best six wins in conference play (6-3-2 mark). Four Cougars earned all-conference honors and two were named to the coaches’ association all-region team.

The Cougars tied a program record for wins with 14 in 2009 after topping Villanova in the first round of the NCAA tournament. It marked the first back-to-back appearances in the postseason for Washington State. The 2009 club tied WSU’s highest finish in the Pac-10 standings (third) with a 5-2-2 mark, finished the year ranked No. 18 in the nation, and set or tied 22 school records in the process.

In 2008, Potter and the Cougars’ appearance in the NCAA tournament marked the fourth in program in history and first since 2002.

Prior to his stint in Pullman, Wa., Potter was the head coach for the women’s team at Scottsdale Community College. In his only season with the Artichokes, he led Scottsdale to the 2002 ACCAC playoffs with a 9-7-1 record.

He spent eight years with the Sereno Soccer Club in Arizona, working as a head coach and trainer. Potter led the `88 girls team to a Region IV second place finish, three third place finishes and four Arizona state titles. That squad and the `84 girls team were consistently ranked as one of the top 10 teams in Region IV. Potter’s `84 team won seven consecutive state titles and overall, he placed nine players on the Region IV team and three advanced to the youth national team pool.

He graduated from West London College of Brunel University in 1992 with an honors degree in physical education and religious, social and moral education. In 1991, he helped lead West London to the National British College title. Potter was also involved with the English national team, representing the country at the U-19 international level. He rose to the top of the game and played professionally for Watford F.C. as a central midfielder. He also worked as a community director with the Brentford Football Club in London.

Originally from Mere, England, Potter is married to Olga and has one daughter, Cassidy, and three stepdaughters, Andrea, Marissa and Valerie.

COACHING STAFF 8

Graeme Abel enters his third season as a member of head coach Matt Potter’s coaching staff in 2014. Originally hired as an assistant in 2012, Abel was promoted to associate head coach during the 2013 offseason--a title granted to reflect Potter’s confidence in Abel’s ability as a coach at OU.

“Coach Abel continues to be a loyal and committed coach and true friend,” Potter said upon Abel’s promotion. “He is an exceptional role model for our student-athletes and continues to make those around him better. As a head coach, you hope to create a team or staff

that can push you to new levels, serve as an example and pursue excellence alongside you. Graeme ticks all those boxes for us.”

In his first season as the associate head coach in 2013, Abel’s continued guidance with the goalkeepers helped lead the team to four shutouts. Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Kassidie Stade improved throughout the season to record at least five saves in seven of her last nine matches and a career-high seven saves in three matches, finishing the season with 67 saves.

During the 2012 season, Abel’s work with the goalkeepers resulted in a record-breaking season for senior Kelsey Devonshire. Under Abel’s guidance, Devonshire recorded a trio of shutouts and 101 saves in her final season as a Sooner, placing her second all-time in shutouts (17 career) and first in saves (390 career.

A native of Liverpool, England, Abel returned to Norman in 2012 as an assistant after serving as the OU goalkeeper coach during the 2008 and 2009 seasons. During the 2010 and 2011 campaigns, Abel worked with the Cougar goalkeepers and Potter at Washington State.

“To have a coach of Graeme’s caliber speaks to the ambition of the program we are trying to build here at the University of Oklahoma.” Potter said at Abel’s hiring. “Graeme has familiarity with the University and within the state, and has established ties in the region.

“He is an outstanding coach with an expertise in goalkeeping. He has the background, pedigree and track record to show he can develop student-athletes on and off the field. He has performed on the highest of stages and coached at the national team level.”

In 2011, Washington State enjoyed one of its best seasons in program history with Potter at the helm and Abel working with the goalkeepers. The Cougars won 12 games a year ago and advanced to the second round of the NCAA tournament, anchored by a defense that limited the opposition to one goal or less in 20 of the 23 games played. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Gurveen Clair posted seven of the team’s nine shutouts last season with a 0.74 goals-against average. The nine shutouts ranks fourth all-time at Washington State and even more impressive, six of the shutouts came in Pac-12 play, a conference that produced the 2011 NCAA National Champion in Stanford.

In 2008, Abel made his first trek to Norman to help then-head coach Nicole Nelson reestablish the program. In addition to working with the OU goalkeepers, Abel also assisted with the program’s recruiting efforts and helped recruit several of the Sooners on the current roster. Also while on the OU staff, Abel worked a camp with the Under-20 U.S. Women’s National Team in 2009, while also working with the Region III Olympic Development Program.

ASSOCIATE HEAD COACH GRAEME ABEL

“It’s exciting to come back to OU and I’m looking forward to helping Matt push the program on to new heights and achievements,” said Abel. “I’d like to thank Matt for allowing me such an opportunity. My time with him at Washington State was extremely enjoyable and I’m both eager and excited to replicate such an environment here in Norman.”

Before Oklahoma and Washington State, Abel worked three years as Nevada’s goalkeepers coach. With Abel on staff, Nevada enjoyed 30 wins and three straight trips to the Western Athletic Conference tournament, including the 2006 WAC Championship and the program’s only NCAA tournament appearance in 2006. In addition, Abel’s pupils anchored a Nevada defense that recorded 23 shutouts in three seasons (Nevada had three in program history prior to his arrival). He also handled aspects relating to compliance and recruiting with the soccer program.

A native of Liverpool, England, Abel graduated from Brescia University in 1994. He currently resides in Norman with his wife, Katie and their son, Kian.

Andy Varns enters his first season as a member of Matt Potter’s OU coaching staff in 2014.

“Andy’s preparedness and attention to detail during the interview process set him apart,” Potter said upon Varns’ hiring. “Andy exudes great character and has a personality that will be an invaluable asset to our student-athletes. We are delighted to welcome Andy and his family to our Sooner Soccer family.”

“The University of Oklahoma is an institution that exudes excellence,” Varns remarked. “I would like to thank Coach Potter and the

administration at OU for giving me the opportunity to become a Sooner and to represent such a fantastic academic and athletic institution. Matt has a clear vision for the program and everything is set up and geared for success. I am excited, honored and highly motivated to be part of a bright and successful future for the women’s soccer program at OU. “

Varns joins the Oklahoma coaching staff after a highly successful stint as the assistant women’s soccer coach at NCAA Division II powerhouse Rollins College. Varns coordinated Rollins’ recruiting efforts, bringing in student-athletes that would later receive All-America, all-region and all-conference honors.

Varns helped guide Rollins to a record of 43-12-4 in three seasons, including an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance in 2013. Rollins had two All-Americans, 11 all-region selections and 16 all-conference picks while Varns was on the coaching staff. Varns also aided Rollins to three consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, a regular season Sunshine State Conference title in 2012 and a conference tournament title in 2013. In 2013, he was the NSCAA South Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Varns was also an NSCAA National Assistant Coach of the Year finalist in 2012.

“Andy has a proven track record as a player, coach and recruiter,” Potter added. “His philosophy on the game and experience of working within teams will push all within the program to be better. The addition of Andy is another positive step in the development of our program.”

Prior to Rollins, Varns spent time at Colorado Mesa University as an assistant. While there, Varns aided CMU to its first-ever NSCAA Top 25 ranking while coordinating the program’s recruiting efforts.

Oklahoma’s newest assistant has also been heavily involved in the club soccer scene as a coach. Most recently, he was the head coach for the Florida Krush Kraze U18 team and the staff trainer for the U15-17 team. Varns helped guide players through the recruiting process, helping athletes land at schools like North Carolina, Indiana, Wake Forest, Florida, South Carolina and Yale.

Varns also spent time with the Orlando City Soccer Club, Central Florida Krush Kraze and Grand Junction Soccer Club and has been involved with coaching and training for U.S. Soccer and the Region IV Olympic Development Program.

Varns graduated from Brescia University in Owensboro, Ky., in 2007. A soccer student-athlete during his undergraduate career, he was an NAIA All-American in 2005, a national player of the week and a multiple-time conference MVP, regional MVP and athlete of the year award winner.

Andy has been married to his wife McKenzie for two years. The couple also has a 10-month-old daughter, Rosey.

OU SOCCER TIMELINE 1996 The Oklahoma soccer program began and My Ta scored the first goal in school history on Sept. 6, 1996, against Regis.

1999 Christen Secrest was named the Sooners’ first All-Big 12 honoree in 1999. Secrest was named to the second team after starting all 18 games on defense.

2000In his second year, Randy Evans is named the Big 12 Coach of the Year and the Central Region Coach of the Year (NSCAA) after OU finishes 10-9-1 overall and 4-5-1 in the Big 12.

2001 The Sooners post a then-program record 11 wins and 36 goals en route to making their second consecutive Big 12 postseason appearance.

2002Logan Womack records the first hat trick in OU history on Sept. 27 against Baylor. OU won 4-2 and Womack finished her career as OU’s all-time leading goal-scorer.

2003The program earns its first top 25 ranking and also makes its first appearance in the NCAA Tournament. OU fell 1-0 to then-No. 7 Tennessee in the first round.

2005The Sooners, led by Lauren MacIver, set program records for wins (13), goals (37), assists (40) and points (114) scored in a season.

2006The OU Soccer Complex reopens after a $4.5 million renovation in the offseason that added locker rooms, increased seating and a press box. The facility originally opened in 2000 and was named John Crain Field in 2002.

2008Whitney Palmer becomes one of three Sooners in school history to collect Big 12 honors in multiple years, joining three-time honorees Lauren MacIver and Logan Womack. She eventually collected her third and fourth honors in 2009 and 2010.

2009The Sooners start off the season with a 6-4-1 record including the program’s first win over Texas A&M. OU topped the then-No. 13 Aggies, 3-2, for the first win in 15 all-time series meetings.

2010The Sooners make a triumphant return to the postseason and make an appearance in the Big 12 Championship game after knocking off Texas and Texas A&M. Despite falling in the title match, OU recorded 12

wins, one shy of the program record, and tied the OU record for goals scored with 37 while returning to the NCAA Tournament.

2011Matt Potter is named the fourth head coach in the history of the program after nine successful years at Washington State. Potter guided the Cougars to three NCAA Tournaments, including a second appearance in 2009 and in 2011.

2012Renae Cullear becomes the first Sooner in history to capture Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors after notching 12 goals in 20 starts. OU logs its third consecutive appearance in the Big 12 Tournament.

2013Oklahoma posts a record of 4-13-1 in Potter’s second year at the helm, shutting out all four opponents in its four victories. True freshmen Jemma Cota and Paige Jacobs are named All-Big 12 Newcomer Team selections.
