ObjectivesEmployment in the agricultural sector( 2016-2019)

Employment in agriculture saw a

dropped during the first quarter of

2019, 12,000 to due to downward

agricultural economy but then

went up to 849,000 in Q:2 Of

2019.

The sub-sectors that faced a

notable reduction in employment

were field crops and livestock,

partly due to a reduction in area

plantings on the back of

unfavourable weather conditions

in the case of field crops.

As of Q2:2019 , the South

African total GDP is valued at

3,1 Trillion Rands and the

agricultural sector contributes

2,2% of the total GDP

This means currently, the

value of agriculture to the

GDP is R74,158 billion

due to drought. Drought lead lead

to massive declines in outputs

from agriculture.Source: Trading economics (2019)

ObjectivesImpact of 4th IR on the agricultural

AGM Panel Discussion

• Artificial intelligence is unleashing a whole new level of productivity and resulting to

challenges to labour force in many sectors

• 4th industrial revolution can also be a disruptive force, dislocating people from jobs and

surfacing questions about the relationship between humans and machines

• According to almost all estimates and forecasts the impact on the labor market will be

significant in a decade horizon and beyond, while it is very likely that about 50% of the

existing jobs will become redundant.

• To measure how the 4th IR may impact occupations within the industry, A task-based

measurement can be used.

ObjectivesPreparing for the future in the agricultural sector

AGM Panel Discussion

• The Fourth Industrial Revolution will provide us with an opportunity to:

• learn and teach new skills

• build new jobs requiring unique skills combinations that don’t exist today

• explore talent that we didn’t know about and,

• in doing so, grow our businesses and create a new generation of workers

that are highly skilled in more diverse areas.
