  • Newsletter Spotlight Major Requirements

    Students must complete BIOSC 0150, BIOSC 0160, CHEM 0110, and CHEM 0120 with a grade of C or better (not C-) in order to declare Neuroscience as a major. To graduate with a BS degree in Neuroscience, students must maintain a 2.0 GPA in major courses and in co-requisite courses.

    Departmental Honors

    Departmental Honors are awarded to students who have achieved outstanding academic success. To qualify for this distinguished honor, a minimum overall GPA of 3.25, a mini-mum Neuroscience GPA of 3.25, and a substantial amount of approved Neuroscience re-search must be conducted. Additionally, students are required to give a public presentation of their research. Eligible students must then pass a faculty review.

    Capstone Requirement Students who have matriculated to A & S since Fall of 2008 must complete a capstone ex-perience. For more information, please contact the advising office via email or call 412-624-5156.

    University of Pittsburgh Fellowships Brackenridge Undergraduate Summer Research Fellowship Research participants receive a monthly $800 stipend to assure their freedom from the need to work during the summer.

    Chancellor's Undergraduate Research Fellowship $600 one-term stipend for undergraduate students engaged in research.

    Chancellor's Undergraduate Teaching Fellowship $600 one-term stipend for undergraduate students engaged in teaching with a faculty member.

    Attention All Students: The MACRO group of the Department of Critical Care Medicine is currently hiring Clinical Trials Research Assistants to work approximately 8‐20 hrs per week. MACRO performs acute care clinical research with and for various departments in the School of Medicine. The CTRA positions will require motivated stu‐dents with an interest in the health sciences to provide support primarily for a new trauma surgery  

    project. Students on a pre‐PA/pre‐med/RN track are desirable but not mandatory. Preference will be given to students with a strong base in medical terminology and with prior in‐hospital or pre‐hospital

    Dan Meikle - Drexel University College of Medicine— clinical training at Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh invites you to volunteer for a research project being conducted by the Department of Gastroentology. The project involves the fol-lowing: · Training of volunteers/educators to be informed, knowledgeable and prepared to educate the public about the simplicity and importance of colon cancer screening. Volunteers should expect to attend 1 or 2 training sessions to pre-pare them for this task.

    · Each volunteer is expected to participate in 1 or 2 education sessions in the community (senior centers, places of worship, drug stores, local gyms, etc.). Responsibilities include giving a presentation, handing out literature, distributing surveys, answering questions appropriately, etc.

    · Have fun interacting with the public we serve while becoming a more active member in improving the health of the West-ern Pennsylvania region. Go live date of late-September/October, 2009.

    College After School Team (CAST) Informational Meeting

    When: Tuesday, September 1st from 7-8pm Where: G23 Parran Hall (School of Public Health Auditorium)

    Come learn about opportunities to tutor and mentor high school students from the Pittsburgh Public School District by becoming a member of CAST! We will discuss program requirements, application and orientation processes, and program content. We will also discuss the one-credit Public Service course option available to under-graduate students, and answer any questions you may have.

    The Health Sciences Diversity office has funding for a year of post-bacc research in either autism or infectious disease. The program, UPIRTA (http://www.healthdiversity.pitt.edu/programs/upirta.php) is open to African American, Hispanic, or Native American neuroscience students who might benefit from (or be interested in) a year of mentored research (with GRE prep) before applying to graduate school (not intended for students who wish to pursue medical school).
