• A Republican (this was a NEW political party at the time)
• Republicans believed in restricting the spread of slavery to new territory
• MAIN GOAL: Hold the Union (the U.S.) together above anything else
Jefferson DavisJefferson Davis
• U.S. Senator who became the President of the Confederacy (CSA)
• From Mississippi but…• Resided in Virginia at the CSA
capital of Richmond during the War
• He was captured by the Union and imprisoned for 2 years after the war
Ulysses S. GrantUlysses S. Grant• Union (or Northern)
military commander• He won major battle
victories in the South while other Union commanders were failing in the North
• He ultimately became the supreme leader of the Union Army and was leader at the time Robert E. Lee surrendered.
