GrowinG Market in Middle east The numbers shown by the latest reports are exciting. The Medical Tourism market which currently stands at approximately AED 64 billion is expected to grow over and above AED 103 billion by 2021. The sharp rise in demand is expected due to constant awareness, research and advancement in the area by the countries in Middle East. Specialists in medical services and more efficiently integrated healthcare solutions are the areas which need to be explored to drive the traffic to the Middle East.

The countries in the Middle East which are attracting the most number of medical tourists are Jordan, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, Israel and Iran. UAE is also trying hard to establish itself as the next Medical Tourism destination. It is enhancing its hospital network, quality healthcare professionals like doctors, nurses and pharmaceutical professionals.

Jordan is the leader in the Medical Tourism industry in the Middle East region. It attracts people from Iraq, Syria, Yemen and other countries in the region. The country and its 106 hospitals provide latest treatments like cosmetic surgery, neurological surgery, orthopaedics, organ transplants and many others. The health centre in Amman receives most of the medical tourists in the country. The country is now targeting medical tourists from Kazakhstan, Chad, and Nigeria- and also existing markets of Algeria, Iraq, Iraqi Kurdistan, Oman, and Saudi Arabia.

The Private Hospitals Association in Jordan has asked the government to facilitate visa applications for restricted nationalities with an exemption for children under 15 and men above 50, as well as all women. It hopes to reach a stage where all e-visas for medical tourists can be approved within 48 hours.

The government has endorsed a new process

for issuing visas for Sudanese and Yemeni nationals to enter the Kingdom, in a bid to promote the Medical Tourism sector. Airlines will be required to provide lists of names of Yemenis wishing to enter Jordan to the Interior Ministry, which will issue visas and security clearances within 48 hours. Sudanese over 50 and in possession of at least USD 5,000 will be granted entry at border crossings. They will be allowed no more than two accompanying persons.

Uae’s propellinG Growth There is an earnest demand for quality healthcare as well as an increase in demand for preventive care and digital health which will contribute to a whopping 60 percent growth of the UAE’s healthcare sector in five years, according to a new study by MENA Research Partners, MRP, a leading research company in the region. Also Medical Tourism and mandatory insurance will also contribute to the sector’s growth, as will a potential for high growth within specific medical device and pharmaceutical sub-sectors.

UAE has decided to make Medical Tourism its top priority and introduce world-class healthcare system to become the leading country when it comes to Medical Tourism in the Middle East. According to the UAE Vision 2021 National Agenda, to achieve that, the agenda emphasises the importance of preventive medicine and seeks to reduce lifestyle-related diseases to ensure longer, healthier lives.

“The healthcare sector in the UAE is witnessing structural shifts and, as a result, is changing fast to adapt to the demands of a younger, more health-conscious population asking for preventive care rather than curative care and, along the way, is more engaged in its own well-being,” said Anthony Hobeika, Chief Executive Officer at MENA Research Partners in a new study

by MENA Research Partners, MRP, a leading research company in the region.

“Being a digitally-savvy population that enjoys one of the highest digital connectivity in the world, the new generation is redrawing the blueprints of the future of healthcare in the UAE. It is looking for a more personalised and specialist healthcare. While doing this, it is moving more towards interaction and self-management which is aided by the ever-growing digital technology in the sector,” Hobeika added.

dUbai shows the way In 2016, Dubai looked after 326,640 domestic and inbound medical tourists which earned AED 1.421 billion in comparison to AED 1.4 billion in 2015, according to a report by Dubai Health Authority (DHA).

The facilities provided by Dubai have led to the emirate claiming the much-desired top position when it comes to Medical Tourism in Middle East, according to Dr Layla Al Marzouqi, Director of the DHA Medical Tourism Council, said.

Ages of medical tourists who visited such facilities in Dubai from outside the country ranged from 25 to 45 years, she said, noting that the medical specialties that were in heavy demand were orthopedics, dermatology and ophthalmology. Giving a region wise break-up of the tourists, Dr Layla mentioned that 27 per cent of the tourists are Asians, 31 per cent Arabs and 15 per cent Europeans.

“The DHA’s strategy is premised to boost the emirate’s competitiveness and enhance its position on the global Medical Tourism scene,” she said, noting that the emirate aims to attract more than 500,000 medical tourists by 2020 and diversify investment opportunities at the healthcare platform.

The emirate is estimated to have 3000 health

establishments and over 35,000 working medical professionals, along with 31 hospitals, and over 1000 medical clinics and one-day surgery centres.

Also, Dubai’s comprehensive electronic Medical Tourism portal, Dubai Health Experience that promises to provide all health, travel, hospitality and visa services at the click of a button has been getting immense response. It presents a plethora of comprehensive medical packages which include procedures such as wellness, cosmetic and dental services, ophthalmology, orthopaedics and physiotherapy and specialised medical tests, to name few. To be precise the website, which is considered the first of its kind in the world, includes 32 healthcare establishments with 380 medical packages, 13 tourism sector partners and over 50 inclusive tourist packages. The initiative has a target of over 500,000 international medical tourists by 2020.

Located in the heart of Dubai, the emirate also has the world’s largest healthcare free zone Dubai

Healthcare City (DHCC) which comprises two phases. Phase 1, dedicated to healthcare and medical education, occupies 4.1 million square feet in Oud Metha, and Phase 2, which is dedicated to wellness, occupies 22 million square feet in Al Jadaf. DHCC has about 160 clinical partners including hospitals, outpatient medical centres and diagnostic laboratories across 150 plus specialties with licensed professionals from almost 90 countries, strengthening its Medical Tourism portfolio.

“Our aim is to provide medical tourists with unparalleled end-to-end services right from research of doctors and health facilities to treatment, accommodation, translator services and post-treatment follow-up. We are working closely with the health sector in the Emirate to achieve this and the MoU with The Health Bank will help us further bolster our strategy to provide medical tourists with such services,” said His Excellency Humaid Al Qatami, Chairman

of the Board and Director-General of the Dubai Health Authority, on the occasion of signing memorandum of understanding (MoU) in April this year with The Health Bank aimed to drive Medical Tourism in the region.

“We are pleased to partner with Swiss Property, and to work together to tap into the wellness lifestyle real estate, one of the fastest-growing global wellness markets,” Bader Saeed Hareb, CEO, Dubai Healthcare City Investments, said.

“In creating a world-class health and wellness destination, DHCC believes that a residential cluster is important to enhance the wellness experience and make the destination liveable. DHCC’s focus is on long-term value creation for our partners in the DHCC community and for future residents who will call our wellness expansion their home,” he added.

“Over the past few years, we have noticed an increase in Medical Tourism, especially in our hotel since it is located near the Dubai Health Care City and opposite the American Hospital in Dubai. Last year, we hosted over 1,500 room/nights with different guests coming for medical treatments in Dubai. We already exceeded 1,000 room/nights YTD,” said Fabien Chesnais, General Manager Mövenpick Hotel & Apartments Bur Dubai.

“Our guests on medical tour can enjoy our complimentary service to Dubai Health Care City, as we arrange, on a daily basis, scheduled shuttle services free of charge. Also, our guests with special needs can stay in our special rooms for no additional costs. The rooms are designed to meet the needs of each guest. The culinary team is also ready to prepare special menus for our guests on a special diet or may be suffering from any food allergies,” he adds.

The DHA also joined hands with Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel Hotel to drive wellness tourism in the region by signing a memorandum of understanding recently.

Samir Arora, General Manager, The Retreat Palm Dubai MGallery by Sofitel, in a press release said the group was confident that the partnership will strengthen Dubai’s reputation as the most desired destination not only among leisure, business travellers, but also among healthcare and wellness oriented visitors from around the globe, including members of the Gulf Co-operaiton Council, Europe as well as Russia and other members of the Commonwealth of Independent States.

Japan signs two MoUs for easing travel for the UAE citizens

Hospitality sector estimated to cost over USD 10 billion

Bahrain and Tunisia are looking to deepen their relations and broaden their cooperation across all fields, especially the tourism sector.

Shaikh Khalid bin Humood Al Khalifa, Chief Executive Officer of the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority (BTEA), received Mohammed Bin Yousif, the Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Bahrain recently.

Shaikh Khalid stressed on the importance of bilateral relations and further enhancing areas of cooperation between both countries.

The Tunisian Ambassador expressed his gratitude to Shaikh Khalid for his warm welcome, valuing BTEA’s constant efforts in enhancing the relations between both countries, further stating that Tunisia aims to work alongside the kingdom to achieve the same goal.

Over 67 per cent of UAE travellers say their holidays start by the time they reach the airport, according to a travel habits survey conducted by YouGov on behalf of Emirates Leisure Retail and Dubai Airports.

Matthew Horobin, Director – Brand Engagement, Dubai Airports, said: “The YouGov survey is further evidence that the airport experience is a fundamental part of the holiday experience, which is why we’re constantly introducing new and exciting ways to engage, entertain and delight our passengers. It also revealed that some passengers are unaware of many of Dubai International’s more recent facilities and services, like the dedicated Kids’ Zone to let children blow off steam, and a major upgrade to provide the world’s best airport wi-fi.”

UAE citizens can now travel to Japan without a pre-entry visa, a senior official has confirmed.

Ahmed Saeed Elham Al Dhaheri, Assistant Under-Secretary for Consular Affairs at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the UAE and Japan have signed two Memorandums of Understanding (MoU) on easing travel for the UAE citizens to Japan.

The MoUs were signed during the visit of Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, to Tokyo in April.

Under the agreement, visa-free entry is allowed to UAE citizens with the diplomatic and special passports on official mission in Japan for any number of days. If they wish to travel to Japan for tourism and business purposes, they

can only stay for a maximum period of 90 days from their date of entry. This comes into effect from July.

Al Dhaheri stated that this accomplishment, which facilitates the movement of citizens from both countries, “is part of strong and exceptional 45-year bilateral relations between the UAE and Japan”.

Bahrain’s hospitality sector continues to see development growth with 15 four and five star hotel projects and 5,100 guest rooms, estimated to cost over USD 10 billion, currently in the pipeline.

Set to open over the next five years, the brands include: The One&Only Resort, Wyndham Grand Hotel, Fairmont, Vida Hotel & Resort, Ibis Hotel and Pullman Hotel.

According to the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibition Authority (BTEA), 12.3 million tourist visitors entered the Kingdom in 2016, a

six per cent increase from 2015, with 88 per cent of day and short trips from Saudi Arabia over the King Fahad Causeway, forming the majority of the hotel room demand for Bahrain.

The current average hotel occupancy for the region in 2016 to date is 60 per cent in comparison to 53 per cent for Manama, Bahrain.

“The region is seeing an influx of new hotel rooms in spite of reduced demand and prolonged economic challenges primarily as a result of deflated oil prices. The majority of hotel rooms available in the Bahrain market in 2016 were in the four-star market constituting 43 per cent of total room supply. In terms of future supply of hotel rooms in the development pipeline, there are an additional 5,100 rooms planned to be introduced by 2021 in the five-Star category which will further advance the standard of property in the Bahrain market,” said Heather Longden, Associate Director, CBRE Bahrain.

THINGS TO DO AND SEE IN BAHRAIN

Bahrain is perhaps not as slick as other oil producing nations but the roughness around the edges gives it a distinct charm. It has layers and meanings that reveal themselves once someone takes the plunge into this alluring desert lanes. As F1 cars throw up sand, the curtain of gold sand moves to reveal a spate of cafes and nightclubs that also pump in adrenaline of a different kind and boasts one of the most pulsating entertainment scenes in the region. All this is built on a spine that claims to be the location of the ancient Dilmun as well as crown jewel of the region’s pearling past. Some even claim this was where Eden lay, the only way to find out is to visit —Eden or not, it certainly shall be a ‘fruitful’ one.

FortiFy yoUr history know at Qal’at al-bahrainA perfect place for those who need their history fix! The innocous looking Bahrain Fort (QAL’AT AL-BAHRAIN) may appear to be just another 16th century fort, however it is perhaps one of the most significant chronicles of hisotry in the Gulf region, if not the world. The fort sits on a urban tell (an artificial mound created by many successive layers of human occupation).Layers upon layers like a much fascinating puzzle, testify to continuous human presence from about 2300 BC to as recent as the 16th century AD. A UNESCO world heritage site and once capital of the ancient Dilmun civilisation, it is a metaphoric box of all-good-chocolates for archeologists, historians and interested visitors. It is a treasure trove, hoard of the richest remains inventoried of this significant civilisation— erstwhile only known from written Sumerian references.

Get MystiFied at a’ali A mystery dominates the north part of the Bahrain ‘islandscape’. The thousands of burial mounds spanning time from the Dilmun era (third to first millennium BC) to the Tylos Era (200 BC to 300 AD). The small mounds are mysterious and intriguing; the sheer concentration and number of these small piles of dirt evoke many a strange emotion. Quite significantly A’Ali the most famous site of these mounds also is famous for the pottery. A surge of potters has come about around the ruins where not only do these potters use traditional methods to fire their pieces but also use some of the burial chambers as kilns!

live Up the niGht The free flow of alcohol leads to free flow of visitors spanning continents and nationalities to this island country, neighboring Saudi Arabia. The effect is reflected in the sheer diversity of the cuisines on offer. Sushi to Steaks, every cuisine has a fine representative in the form of some truly fine restaurants. Music is big as live performances with some trendy international bands from rocking the scene, jostling for attention between a spate of pulsating karaoke bars, lounges and the likes. The bohemian neighbourhood of Adliya is the place to head for those who want to get the most out of a night out.

GorGe on Global cUisine Those expecting restaurants after restaurants of Arabic cuisine, interspersed with the odd burger-pizza joint are in for a surprise. The considerable ex-pat community in the country has given rise to a rather formidable food culture. From Sushi to Steaks, Italian to Indian, there is a variety of some truly fine establishments. Traditional Bahrain food, is largely similar to what other Middle Eastern and Lebanese cuisnes offer, however with a distinctiveness but set apart by the traditional Bahraini Spice Mix and liberal usage of black lemon. So the falafels and shawarmas are aplenty but with a distinctive flavour. Be sure to pop into a roadside kebab or in case you are more discerning one of the many up-scale establishments for a flavour pop.

live liFe in the Fast laneBahrain International Karting Circuit (BIKC) offers super car experience that make Bahrain the motorsport capital of the Middle East. Home to the Bahrain Grand Prix and a great hub for the race-chasers, the circuit has much more speedy-wheel enthusiasts. Stop watching from the sidelines and get behind the wheel of a Renault Clio. For those who prefer power, the Top Dragster shall zoom you with a rush of adrenaline with a massive Big Block engine of 10,500cc that can register a top speed of 274 kph within a quarter-mile, that means a quarter mile in eight seconds of less.

top Up yoUr shoppinGIt is not surprising that Bahrain has probably all the wonderful trappings of capitalism with the world’s top designers, luxury boutiques and all things plush. On the other end are the atmospheric, labyrinth lanes of the Manama Souq where bargains line counters. From spices to electronics, pearls to perfumes and bottles sheesha, everything is for sale in an Arabic setting that probably hasn’t altered much since Scheherazade regaled with her one thousand and one tales.

Go FishinG For artWhile one would expect to dive for pearls in Bahrain, there are artistic pearls hiding in the urban sea of this seemingly cut and dried financial centre. Bahrain has an artistic soul that is reflected in its burgeoning art scene. Small galleries, art cafes and the likes are slowly gaining a dominant position as corporate spaces and government institutions are making space for art on their walls. With resolute royal patronage Her Royal Highness Princess Sabeeka Bint Ibrahim Al Khalifa, Bahrain has been hosting an Annual International Art Festival, successfully exposing Bahraini artists to the world. Al Riwaq Art Space, Albareh Art Gallery and Bin Matar House may be some places worth checking out for a bargain which may soon turn into a worthy investment —for the soul, wall and wallet.

Airlines will offer 1,800 hours of movies, television, shows, games and music

The airlines picked up four awards including “Best Airline in Southern Europe”

Etihad Airways has been given a top rating by London’s Heathrow Airport for its emissions and night-time noise performance during the first three months of 2017.

The “Fly Quiet and Clean” League Table, the first of its kind to be produced by the airport, placed the UAE’s national airline among the top carriers for operating the cleanest and quietest fleets.

The top rating recognition is the result of a programme of disciplined flying by Etihad Airways’ Operations which strictly manages airport approaches and departures, as well as adhering to air traffic control instructions and procedures.

Gulf Air has introduced a multi-ticket discount scheme giving Bahrain-based passengers discounts when purchasing multiple tickets (up to a maximum of five return trips) under one booking code for travel within three months to select GCC destinations.

Ahmed Janahi, Gulf Air Chief Commercial Officer, said, “Gulf Air operates double daily flights or more to ten regional cities, and it is this connectivity that caters to and allows for convenient regional travel for business and leisure passengers. We have recognised the key intra-GCC traveller segment and our multi-ticket discount scheme is tailored to them specifically, giving regular customers, who travel frequently within the GCC region, to save even more when booking their flights with Gulf Air – in either Falcon Gold or Economy class.”

Saudi Arabian Airlines also known as Saudia has announced an increase in the amount of entertainment programs available onboard its aircraft, offering 1,800 hours of movies, television shows, games and music options.

With the increased variety of content, guests flying with Saudia can view movies in Arabic, English, French, Italian, Spanish and German. A wide selection of international movies are also available in Malayalam, Tamil, Hindi, Korean, Mandarin and Tagalog.

Following a recently-signed agreement with Warner Brothers and Fox, an extensive selection of Hollywood programmes are now available onboard. The expanded library in the airline’s Inflight Entertainment System (IFE) includes a large selection of religious programs, Arabic Cinema, action, comedy, drama, thriller, sci-fi, fantasy, animation, educational, lifestyle, business, family programs, sports, Bollywood titles and games.

In particular, a significant selection of Islamic content is available onboardSaudia

(208 programs) which are sourced from Saudi Arabia’s Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Dawah, and Guidance.

Additionally, a re-designed entertainment platform has been simultaneously created to complement the addition of the new content, making it seamless for guests to scroll through the categories.

Director General of Saudi Arabian Airlines, Engineer Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, said, “Saudia is committed to providing all of our guests with the very latest available entertainment selections when they travel for business or leisure. We understand the importance of staying connected onboard and the airline continues to make investments to ensure that the latest industry-leading technology is available in our fleet.”

Turkish Airlines has picked up four awards in the Skytrax World Airline Awards, the results of which announced at Paris Airshow recently.

The awards won by Turkey’s national airline included “Best Airline in Southern Europe”, “Best Business Class Onboard Catering”, “World’s Best Business Class Lounge”, and “Best Business Class Dining Lounge”.

The awards were presented to M. Ilker Ayci, Turkish Airlines’ Chairman of the Board and the Executive Committee by the CEO of Skytrax, Edward Plaisted.

Aycı stated, “Being deemed worthy of these awards is a hallmark of our outstanding effort that we show in all spheres of aviation and the steady growth that we perform in this direction.”

“Maintaining its leading position in its region, Turkish Airlines continues to be rewarded by passengers from all over the world. We achieved numerous successes till today, but we are the members of a strong, determined and self-sacrificing family that always highly motivated for greater successes as long as being

rewarded. We are confident that both these motivations and our huge effort will lead us to much greater successes in the near future,” Aycı added.

Skytrax evaluates traveller experiences across different airport service and product key performance indicators. Following this evaluation process it awards the most successful organisations with its World Airline Awards described as ‘the Oscars of the aviation industry’.
