Shorter doctor hours don’t hurt patientLONDON, 26 March—

A review of 72 US andBritish studies foundreducing doctor workinghours does not seem tohave hurt patient safety, researchers say.

Researchers atUniversity CollegeHospital, London, andcolleagues say in the past20 years there have beenefforts to lower thenumber of hours US andEuropean doctors-in-training — Denmark

requires the maximumnumber of hours workedin a hospital at 37, whilethe United States requiresno more than 80 hours aweek. In 2009, theEuropean Working TimeDirective restrictedtrainee doctors in Europework no more than 48hours a week.

“It’s like an arms race and in manyways the germs are winning,” he said.

While not new to California, CRKPis a newer infection than MRSA, DrArjun Srinivasan of the Centres forDisease Control and Prevention said.

scientists have discovered the remains of asaber-toothed vegetarian. The leaf-crunchinganimal — about the size of a large dog —lived 260 million years ago in what is nowBrazil, researchers report in Friday’s editionof the journal Science. Its upper canine teethwere nearly 5 inches long.

The enormous canines were likely usedby the plant-eating animals to fight eachother or protect against predators, saidresearch leader Juan Carlos Cisneros of theUniversity of Piaui in northeastern Brazil. For example, they might have fought forterritory, resources or females, like themodern musk deer, which also have a pairof large, tusklike teeth, he said via email.

“These situations are extremelyimportant for the survival of an individualand the success of a species,” he said.Discovering animals like this “shows ushow nature is extremely creative in providingsolutions for several life tasks.”

In addition to its saber shaped fangs, thenewly discovered animal named Tiarajudenseccentricus (tee-AH-ruh-HOO-denz ek-SIN-trik-us) had rows of teeth on the roof of itsmouth for chewing, the researchers said. The lower jaw was incomplete, but they

expect it would have had similar rowsof teeth.

Tiarajudens was part of a group ofanimals known as anomodonts, sometimes called “mammal-likereptiles” and a major plant eater oftheir time.

The discovery provides novelinsights into early tooth differences inthese ancient animals and the evolutionof plant eating and its complex socialinteractions, commented JoergFroebisch of Humboldt University inBerlin, who was not part of Cisneros’research team.—Internet

Sun eruption creates spectacularplasma tentacle

WASHINGTON, 26 March— ANASA spacecraft watching thesun has caught a dazzling viewof a solar eruption that launcheda vast tendril of magnetic plasmainto space.

NASA’s Solar DynamicsObservatory recorded the suntentacle, which scientists call asolar prominence, on 19 Marchas it erupted into space with arounded, twisting motion.

The eruption occurred overfive hours as SDO watched thesun in the ultraviolet range of thelight spectrum, SDO missionscientists said in a statement.

The solar observatorywatched as the prominencetwisted up from the sun andexpanded, then became unstable.

Ultimately, the sun filamentlost cohesion and its particlesstreamed away from the sun.

“Prominences are elongatedclouds of plasma that hover abovethe sun’s surface, tethered bymagnetic forces,” SDO missionscientists explained.

The sun is currently in the

midst of an active phase of its11-year solar weather cycle andhas kicked up a series of powerfuleruptions and flares in recentmonths.

The SDO spacecraft andother space observatories arekeeping a close watch on thesun to monitor is solar weatheractivity.

Earlier this month, the sununleashed its second X-classsolar flare of the year that wasaimed at Earth.

X-class solar flares are thestrongest types of solar flares.

The weakest types of solarflares are Class C sun storms, with Class M flares registeringas medium strength, but stillpowerful, NASA scientists havesaid.

Strong solar flares, whenaimed at Earth, can potentiallydisrupt satellites and powergrids, as well as pose a hazard toastronauts on spacecraft.

They can also spark dazzlingshows of the northern lights, oraurora borealis.—Internet

BEIJING, 26 March — Leading accountancy firmPricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) has claimed thatChina will overtake the US and dominate global tradeby 2030. Currently, China’’s international trade isworth 2.21 trillion dollars (1.36 trillion pounds),compared to the 2.66 trillion dollars (1.64 trillionpounds) for the US.

China had overtaken Japan to secure its place asthe world’’s second-biggest economy earlier thisyear. The BBC quoted the PwC report as saying thatglobal trade will undergo “fundamental change” inthe coming years as emerging economies like Chinaand India begin to “dominate the top sea and airfreight routes”.

PwC’’s findings are a reflection of the WorldBank’’s prediction that China’’s economy willbypass the US by 2030 if it can sustain its growth. The firm’s chief economist Justin Lin has said thatChina be twice the size of the US economy in 20years if it continues to grow at an annual rate of eightpercent.

The PwC findings have also shown that China isin a dominant position in terms of bilateral trade, andappeared in 17 of the top 25 bilateral trade pairingsin 2009.

China is the world’’s largest goods producer, with 19.8 percent of all manufactured productscoming from the economic heavyweight.

Study finds wind speeds rose overworld’s oceans

WASHINGTON, 26March—During the lastquarter-century, averagewind speeds haveincreased over theworld’s oceans, as havewave heights, generatingrougher seas, resea-rchers reported in a studypublished online Thurs-day.

Since faster windscause more evaporation, the increase could leadto more water vapor inthe air, compoundingany increase from globalwarming and providingadded moisture for rain.Generally, that means ahigher chance forrainfall.

Researchers led byIan Young of SwinburneUniversity of Techno-logy in Australia report

in the journal Sciencethat over a 23-yearperiod, average windspeed over the oceansrose by 0.25 percent peryear. The proportion ofincrease in wave heightwas less than for windspeed, the researchersnoted, while the increasefor extreme winds wasmore than for averagewinds. The researcherssaid the higher windsaren’t necessarily theresult of global warming.

But Eugene S Takle, director of the climatescience programme atIowa State University, and not part of Young’sresearch team, noted thatevaporation rises withhigher wind speeds, sothe result would be moremoisture in the air even

without global warming.And the warming

shown in many studieswould also increaseevaporation.

Just two years ago,Takle and colleaguespublished a study ofwind speeds over landshowing a decrease, rather than the increaseYoung’s team found inits measurements fromsatellites and buoys.Young studied satelliterecords from 1985 to2010, though records for1990-91 were notavailable because ofsatellite problems.

“I don’t think theseresults provide a clearcontradiction to ourfindings of decliningwind speeds over land, since measurements aremade in differentenvironments,” saidTakle.

He noted that theday-to-night changes intemperature are differentover land than over waterand the boundary layer— the portion of theatmosphere that mostclosely interacts with thesurface — is generallythicker over land thanwater.

PARIS, 26 March — The French chessfederation has suspended three top play-ers for violating sporting ethics at a chessolympiad in Siberia last September. Thetrio are alleged to have used an elaboratescheme involving text messages andcomputer software to help beatopponents at Khanty-Mansiysk. Federa-tion head Laurent Verat said it was thefirst case of its kind.

The players — Sebastien Feller, CyrilMarzolo and captain Arnaud Hauchard— all deny cheating at the tournament.“There have already been suspicions ofcheating in chess, even involving strongplayers in the past, but there has neverbeen proof of cheating,” Mr Verat toldAFP news agency.

According to the French federation, while international grand masterSebastien Feller, 19, was involved in agame, Cyril Marzolo followed develop-ments over the internet and used com-puter software to establish the best nextmove. The answer was then sent by

means of a coded text message to the thirdmember of the team, Arnaud Hauchard.

The third member would then sit him-self at a particular table in the competi-tion hall. Each table represented an agreedsquare on the chess board. This, according to French media reports, wasthe most delicate part of the operation. Thealleged strategy was discovered byFrench chess federation Vice PresidentJoanna Pomian, who spotted a text mes-sage on the mobile phone of one of thethree players while the French team wasinvolved in a game. —Internet
