What can you learn
from throwing a
Discus?
Sports Day is approaching rapidly. I
love walking around the school and
watching students involved in all kinds
of different sporting activities. Last
week I watched some of our students
grappling with the discus for the first
time. It is an interesting skill and takes
some mastering.
It brought back to me a story I read
about an American called Robert
Garrett. He competed in the 1986
Olympics in Discus. It was the first time
he had ever competed in a discus
event. And he won! It seems unlikely
or even incredible . His tactic was to
train with an exceptionally heavy
discus which meant when he came to
competition the standard one felt light
and easy to throw. Despite having an
unusual throwing action he beat the
best in the world including the highly
fancied Greek athletes who were
smooth majestic throwers.
1 Corinthians 9:24 “All competitors
in a race run, but only one of them
receives the prize. Run then in
such a way that you may obtain it.”

From the Principal
It has been an absolute joy over the last few weeks to see our Year 5 students walking into school with their musical instruments. The way they carry them with reverence is really heart warming. I have had the pleasure of hearing some of our budding flute and
trombone players in action - they are progressing really well. Thanks to all involved in our music program.
We are working towards getting building approval for work to commence on our new building. We are still hopeful that we can get the concrete slab and associated services layed in the school holiday period. Staff and the Architect are working toward our final drawings that hopefully go to the Certifier in the next fortnight or so. We will display a 3D impression of the building and floor plan
in the office from next week.
Our students are working hard to prepare for sports day - in particular our House Captains and Vice Captains. One of the hall marks of our sports day has been the exceptionally high participation rates and the way our students support and value
participation. Please encourage your child to take part and contribute to this great community day.
We are working towards a staffing solution for the year 5/6 class next term when Rachael Johnson takes maternity leave. By next
newsletter we should be able to let the community know what our staffing will look like for the remainder of the year.
Congratulations to our students who have been elected to represent their class on our Student Representative Council. We look forward to your input and events throughout the year. We thank Mayor Darren Braund for attending our Chapel last week and addressing the students on leadership and service - it was a very inspiring message. We also thank our Staff Band and our Chapel
Action Team for supporting our Chapel service.
David Field
There is a great message in this for all of us. It has a lot to do with the way we
approach activities in life - more so than actually winning. Garret wasn’t perturbed by
the fact he was not a smooth actioned thrower - he focused totally on the end result and
the attitude needed to get there. Maybe there are times where God gets us to do a bit
of “heavy” lifting (or throwing) to give us the strength for what lies ahead.
Blessings for your week.

congratulating Oscar Schulz (Yr 1 class SRC rep).

Given the life threatening nature of anaphylaxis, and having students with this allergy
at school, MLS is a ‘Nut Fee’ school.
No student is to bring the following foods to school: Peanut butter (sandwiches, dips or crackers) Nutella (Sandwiches or dips) Biscuits and cakes with nuts in them Muesli bars with nuts Chocolate containing nuts eg snickers Dried fruit and nut mixes
(This does not include products that contain the warning “may contain traces of nuts”)
Our paramount concern is for the safety and well being for all children in our care. To keep
these students safe and well at school, all must comply with this policy.

Davis Learning Strategies at Maitland Lutheran - Reading & Learning Strategies
As adults, we have learnt life skills that help us cope in a range of situations throughout the day. Some of these skills include how to bring our attention back to the task at hand (focus), how to slow ourselves down or speed ourselves up to physically deal with situations (dial) and when we get stressed we know how to take a deep breath/sigh and stop for a moment (release). Some students don’t automatically know these life skills and they need to be taught these tools through teachers and classroom experiences.
Throughout our school we use the Davis Learning Strategies which include Release, Dial, Focus and Koosh ball in some specific mental and physical exercises.
These exercises are designed to help students get the most out of their learning. By the time they leave school they are self-managing and using these tools so that they can achieve their best with whatever task they put their mind to.
During the first few years of school, as well as the traditional method of learning the alphabet and basic sight words by seeing, hearing and writing (visually and orally), students learn their letters and words through creating them (kinesthetically). Students use clay to create their alphabet, which is firstly really fun for them but it also reinforces letter formation, fine motor skills and enables our students to practice how to be focused and to re-focus for learning. Basic sight words and spelling words may also learnt through this kinesthetic method, with the use of the dictionary to fully understand the meaning of the words.
We provide extra 1:1 support for students who may require more assistance with reading, writing and the use of the Davis Learning Strategies, so that it becomes a more positive and successful experience. This is run by Mrs Elisabeth May who is a teacher with a lot of experience in this field. This year we are also starting a “Clay Club” programme which follows on from the 1:1 support with Mrs May. This enables chosen students to work on spelling and literacy tasks, dictionary skills, reading and basic sight words, and to be more independent by starting to self regulate the use of their tools (release, dial & focus) with support close by for assistance if necessary.
The use of the Davis Learning Strategies has been highly successful, especially in other Countries including New Zealand. If you would like to know more about the Davis Learning Strategies, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs May or visit the below websites.

The 2020 Yorke Peninsula Relay For Life is being held from 24-25 October at the Wallaroo Football Oval.
Relay For Life brings communities together to celebrate cancer survivorship, remember loved ones lost during the Candlelight Ceremony and empower teams of families, friends and colleagues to raise money to fight back against cancer through vital research, prevention and support programs. The event is organised by passionate volunteers, and it is an experience that will stay with you forever.
Everyone is invited to join the Yorke Peninsula Relay for Life and help create a cancer free future by joining forces and teaming up to raise funds in the lead up to their local event. We are currently in our team recruiting stage and are keen to have participants/teams represented from all over the Peninsula. The Relay is a fun and humbling experience for all participants. Consider registering a team today – ask your work colleagues, school friends, sporting mates, family and friends. The event is hosted over 19 hours and teams are required to ensure one member is walking on the track at all times to signify that cancer never rests, so neither will we!
To register a team or find out more information please go to www.relayforlife.org.au or phone Julia Agnew on 0438 090 595.
