Maioro Street Interchange

Background • The Maioro Street Interchange project connects

to the recently opened SH20 Mt Roskill Extension motorway

• As part of the Mt Roskill Extension, a roundabout was constructed where the Southwestern Motorway (SH20) ends at the intersection of Sandringham Road Extension

• A cycleway constructed as part of Mt Roskill Extension runs alongside SH20

• Stage 1 enabling works to prepare for construction of Maioro Street Interchange have been underway since May this year

• The new interchange is one of seven overall packages of work to complete the Western Ring Route Road of National Significance between Maioro Street Interchange and Westgate

• Further west on the Northwestern Motorway (SH16) at Lincoln Road a $100 million project has started to rebuild the interchange and widen the motorway beneath to improve safety, traffic flow and efficiency for freight and motorists

Key features• New half diamond interchange constructed to form the gateway from

SH20 Mt Roskill Extension to the Waterview Connection

• Removal of the existing roundabout where SH20 ends at Sandringham Road Extension

• As part of the new interchange layout, Sandrigham Road Extension will be closed between Stoddard Road and SH20

• Maioro Street will be realigned and extended further north to a new signalised intersection with Stoddard Road

• Installation of two new sets of traffic lights for smooth access on and off the motorway

• When complete, Waterview Connection will pass beneath Maioro Street and a new bridge will take local traffic over the motorway

• Maioro Street will benefit from additional landscaping and trees

• A further section of SH20 cycleway will be added to take cyclists from Ernie Pinches Footbridge through to Maioro Street

• A new semi-permanent stormwater treatment pond will collect and treat runoff from the motorway

• Any noise will be mitigated by realigning and extending the noise walls near Christ the King School and properties in Ernie Pinches Street

• Cost - $40 million

• Construction start – May 2010

• Estimated completion – March 2012

• Fletcher Construction, URS and Jasmax are constructing the new interchange for the NZ Transport Agency

Benefits• Eventually the interchange will be developed into a full diamond

interchange with motorway ramps for both north and southbound traffic

• This will create a seamless connection between the existing and future Southwestern Motorway (SH20)

• Quicker and smoother trip for cyclists with the extension of the SH20 cycleway

• Local connections and motorway access established for residents of New Windsor, Mt Roskill and Wesley

• The design of the interchange accommodates any planned expansion of SH20 in the future from four lanes to six lanes

The Southwestern Motorway (SH20) currently finishes at a roundabout with Sandringham Road Extension. Also visible is the

cycleway running alongside SH20 that will be extended as part of the project.
