The plays of the Italian dramatist, poet, and librettist Carlo Goldoni brought new realism and more credible characterization to the Italian stage. He wrote more than 250 works in Italian, Venetian dialect, and French.

Born to a prosperous middle-class family, Carlo Goldoni displayed a theatrical inclination from early childhood. As a university student, he often put aside his law books to attend performances. In 1734, after 3 years in the diplomatic service, Goldoni became poet of the Imer company in Venice and successively was appointed director of the S. Samuele and S. Giovanni Crisostomo theaters.

Although he interrupted theatrical activities in 1744 to practice law, Goldoni returned to

Venice in 1748 as poet of the S. Angelo theater, then under the leadership of Girolamo Mede-bac. Overworked and underpaid - his contract for 1750 demanded 16 new plays - Goldoni accepted a competing offer from the S. Luca theater.

1748-1762 represent the most successful time in Goldoni’s career. He was able to incor-porate his views on dramatic reform into the fabric of his works. Until Goldoni, the prevail-ing commedia dell’arte style depended upon actors who improvised their roles from a list of stock characters. Goldoni’s works restored direction to the playwright, whose scripts - not an actor’s improvisations - determined the play.

Goldoni’s more credible and more realistic works soon gained an immense following. Among his most successful are The Crafty Wid-ow (1748); The Anti-quarian’s Family (1749); The Comic Theatre (1750); and La Locandiera (1753; Mine Hostess). From these and other works emerged the ethical content of Goldoni’s character plays. A believer in modernity and progress, he championed the rights of women and the equality of all classes.

Goldoni’s successes did not spare him from criticism. During the period 1748-1753, while Goldoni was creating more realistic and thoughtful plays, he was often attacked by Pietro Chiari, a writer of sentimental, romantic dramas at a rival theater and also Count Carlo Gozzi. Irascible and title-conscious, Gozzi endeavored to discredit Goldoni for the demo-cratic, progressive views that were opposite to those of the aristocratic conservative. Disguised

as a defense of traditional dramatic forms, Gozzi’s criticism of Goldoni’s realism was an extension of this personal antagonism.

Goldoni, a mild-mannered, pleasant person with no desire to continue this bitter polemic, left Venice for the prestigious directorship of the Italian theater in Paris. However, after 2 unhappy years (1762-1764) he accepted appointment as tutor in Italian (1764-1768) to the daughters of King Louis XVI. While maintaining residence in Paris, Goldoni furnished new material in Italian and dialect for the Venetian stage. Also from this period come his works written in French. Especial-ly noteworthy are the comedy Le Bourra bienfaisant (1771) and Memoirs of His Life and Theatre (1787), from which the reader gains a view of Goldoni’s evolving dramatic style and detailed accounts of artists, directors, and theaters of his time.

The French Revolution brought an end to the pension Goldoni had been receiving from the French government. Already in his 80s and nearing blindness, Goldoni spent his last years in pov-erty-stricken suffering. Ironically, news of the reinstatement of his pension in 1793 arrived the day after his death.

GERRI AARON To me, FST is a great theater experience in the respect that I’ve seen plays in New York City and then seen the very same plays here; they are just as good if not better. Richard Hopkins is amazing; he continues to select plays that both confirm and challenge one’s beliefs. FST is a Sarasota treasure that keeps getting better.

GEORGIA COURT I love great theater and FST delivers that. FST is among the best theater companies I have seen, but it is more than a theater company. It is an organization that recognizes it is part of the greater community - and it reaches out to that community in positive, productive ways. Having FST so accessible adds to the joy of living in the fabulous arts community that is Sarasota.

GULF COAST COMMUNITY FOUNDATION Together with its donors, Gulf Coast creatively invests in unique cultural assets like Florida Studio Theatre. Gulf Coast is the philanthropic home of more than 600 families who have established charitable funds there and together they have invested over $208 million in grants in the areas of arts and culture, health and human services, civic and economic development, education, and the environment. ROBERT & BONNY ISRAELOFF Our favorite FST story happened while attending a performance for the first time, many years ago and saying, “This is theater! Do they have a season subscription?!” FST is thought provoking, Broadway worthy theater. We believe FST is important because it enriches our community; helps make Sarasota what it is. This is why we have proudly contributed to past expansions; especially the new Gompertz Theatre complex, to aid FST’s mission in being ever more accessible to the public.

ERNIE KRETZMER IN LOVING MEMORY OF ALISA KRETZMER I would describe FST as uncommonly

intimate theater, well-articulated and succinct. FST is important to me because I can usually follow the dialog despite a hearing problem - almost invariably with great enjoyment. It’s the perfect window to take in the contemporary scene. Favorites have been Kate Alexander in Golda’s Balcony - superbly acted! And a comedy featuring Carolyn Michel playing the part of a dog (interfering in a marriage) can’t remember title... but lots of good laughs.

DENNIS & GRACI MCGILLICUDDY FST is important to us because we believe so strongly in the transformative power of the arts. For close to 30 years now, we have been so fortunate to experience first-hand how that transformative power works its magic in the hands of an organization that is not only experienced and dedicated but so highly skilled in their craft. The values of the theater and its leadership, as reflected in its mission, and as manifested in its work, whether it be on the main stage, in the cabaret, and in its education and community outreach programs, are values that we so strongly believe in. As a consequence, it is a privilege for us to be a part of, and supportive of this great theater.

ANNE NETHERCOTT When asked to define giving, Anne said: “My mother used to say, ‘The best way to find you is to lose yourself, by focusing on the needs of others rather than on oneself.’” So, giving has always been an important family value, which in childhood was reinforced by the community experience of surviving The Depression. Anne is proud to be a supporter of FST.

DOROTHY WALDRON I support FST for its diversity of programming; Mainstage, Cabaret, Improv, WRITE A PLAY children’s program and VIP program, for special needs children. Also, there is summer camp and classes for adults; it is truly a wonderful community asset.

SEASON UNDERWRITERS

CO-PRODUCERSThe HERALD-TRIBUNE MEDIA GROUP enjoys a history in this community that spans more than 90 years. Partnering with organizations such as Florida Studio Theatre allows us to contribute to our region’s rich creative culture in Sarasota, Braden-ton, and Venice providing an unparalleled media landscape through the newspaper, HeraldTribune.com, HT Studio, and popular niche sites such as TicketSarasota.com.

JANET HEVEY I support the cost of the plays because I have always enjoyed the professionalism and selection of theatre material. The content and issue of the play is the “thing” at FST, not the staging or set of the play. I love seeing a show and being able to have my own “theatre-of-mind” of what I’m seeing. I’ve attended theatre in Milwaukee and Chicago; FST delivers better quality, much more affordable and is a very welcoming, relaxing evening.

FRANK & ANNE FOLSOM SMITH Anne has been a mainstay in the beautification of interior design in many venues within the Sarasota area. Anne serves on several local boards which promote art and edu-cation in our community. As a longtime supporter of FST, she and Frank are thrilled to be sponsoring One Man, Two Guvnors this season!

GAIL & SKIP SACK The first time we visited Florida Studio Theatre, we were totally “hooked”. Watching a play in a small, intimate theatre, with incredibly talented actors performing only a few feet away, is a unique experience. We have been Season Sub-scribers for over 15 years, and we have always been impressed with the intensity of the acting. We’re delighted to be Co-Producers.
