Dear Reader,
My Websters New World Dictionary defines Vacationland as an area attractive to vacationers
because of recreational facilities, historic sitesin a word, Maine. Maine takes great pride in its
designation as Vacationland. As you look through your copy of Maine Invites You, what will
capture your attention first is the multitude of things to see and do in Maine.
The natural beauty of Maine. Our gently sloping, sandy beaches and our steep and rocky
shoreline that so many equate with the rugged New England Coast. Our forests that offer the
peace and solitude best described as indescribable. Sunrise atop Cadillac Mountain in Acadia
National Park will open your eyes to the spectacular beauty that can only be experienced in
Maine. Our lakes, ponds, rivers and streams are teeming with trophy fish. Wildlife in its natural
surroundings. Scenery too beautiful for words. For you, it can mean a lifetime of memories.
Our culture and history is part of all of Maine. Our Franco-American heritage and our close
ties to the Canadian provinces are unique in all of the United States. Our lighthouses are
beacons to the visitor that say, You have found us, now stay awhile. While all of America
has beauty and sights to behold, I would argue that Maine offers those in greater abundance
with much more room in which to enjoy the moment. We offer something for everyone, each
season of the year. After all, it is Mainethe way life should be!
As Maines premier travel publication, Maine Invites You is the only resource you need to
help make all that I have tempted you with a reality. We offer this same publication in an easily
accessed electronic version. And this year we have made possible Maine travel information via
your hand-held electronic device at iphone.mainetourism.com. We want you to have access
to all that Maine has to offer with as much ease as possible.
In addition to our publications, Maine Invites You and the Official Maine Highway Map, we
operate Maines seven Visitor Information Centers. There you will find a PC free for the publics
use as well as free Wi-Fi. I encourage you to stop and visit with our travel counselors. Take a
break, stretch your legs and seek their advice on the road less traveled. I promise you our
friendly, knowledgeable and caring staff can make your trip to Maine even more memorable.
All that is missing from the picture of a lifetime is you, your family and friends.
All the beauty and unique people and places that are Maine await your arrival. We look
forward to welcoming you and to helping you create those special memories.
Warmest regards,
Vaughn Stinson, CTC
Chief Executive Officer

MAINE ENJOYS a healthy, in vigorating climate. Its over all weather con-ditions are a valuable asset to the state in that good air quality andmoderate temperatures are con du cive to productive labor and a prin-cipal factor in Maines four-season vacation/travel industry.
Climatological Division. Maine is divided into three climatological divisions: Coastal, Southern Interior, and North ern Interior. The CoastalDivision, which extends for about twenty miles in land along the lengthof the coast, is tem pered by the ocean, resulting in lower summer andhigher winter temperatures than are typical of in terior zones. TheSouth ern Interior Division extends in a longitudinal belt across thesouth ern portion of the State, and encompasses about 30% of Mainestotal area. The Northern Interior Division occupies nearly 60% of theStates area and has a continental climate. It is furthest from the oceanand contains the highest elevations.
Temperatures. Maine has one of the most comfortable statewidesummer climates in the continental United States. Peak temperatures, normally occurring in July, average about 70F throughout the State. Inthe Southern Interior Divi sion during a very warm summer, tem pera-tures may reach 90 for as many as 25 days, and in the Coastal Division, two to seven days. Summer nights are usually comfortably cool. Wintersare generally cold, but very prolonged cold spells are rare. Northern Interior weather stations may record as many as 40 to 60 days of sub-zero temperatures annually, while coastal stations report 10 to 20 sub-zero days per year.
Precipitation. Annual precipitation in Maine averages 40 inches inthe Northern Division, about 42 inches in the South and 46 inches in theCoastal Division. Although Maine is rarely subjected to ice storms, hur-ricanes and tornadoes, 10 to 20 thunderstorms occur annually in theCoastal Division and 15 to 30 else where. Heavy ground fogs often appear in low-lying inland areas, but occur most frequently along thecoast, for 25 to 60 days annually. The southern portion has 80 to 120clear days per year when there is no fog or other precipitation, andnorthern regions somewhat less. The percentage of possible sunshinevaries from 50% in Eastport to about 60% in Portland.
Average annual snowfall in Maine is 50 to 70 inches in the CoastalDivision, 60 to 90 inches in the Southern Interior and 90 to 110 inchesin the Northern Interior. The Coastal Division rarely has more than 15 to20 days annually with snowfall of one inch or more, although a Northeaster may occasionally drop 10 or more inches of snow in asingle day. The Northern Interior may have up to 30 days a year with a minimum of one inch. January is normally the snowiest month, withan average of about 20 inches.

Get an eagles-eye view of the 19th century, as well as a 360-degree view of mountains, lakes and towns, from the top of the worlds tallest public bridge-observatory. Fort Knox was established in 1844 to protect the river valley and the wealthy city of Bangor from possible British naval attack. You might think that the coast of Maine is all rugged, rocky cliffsbut in The Maine Beaches region, the sand stretches for thirty miles. Further east, in the Greater Portland & Casco Bay and the Mid-Coast regions, youll find lovely sandy pocket beaches sheltered between rocky spurs, and some gorgeous sandy shores on the peninsulas. Even Acadia National Park has its Sand Beach. And for fresh water fans, we have around 6,000 lakes and ponds. Go to www.visitmaine.com for more information. Ogunquit Beach Robert Dennis

Portland, Bangor and Lewiston-Auburn, Maines big cities, really are big in spirit, yet still small enough to be friendly. With more diverse populations than rural parts, here is where youll find wonderful ethnic restaurants, fascinating boutiques and artisans shops, dance, theater and music performances, architectural and historical walking tours, art museums and galleries, sporting events and festivals of all kinds, in every season. Naturally, lobster is still the star at seafood eateries along the coast, where fresh means that your entre was almost certainly swimming just a few hours ago. But we also have top-notch chefs, at fine restaurants, inns and resorts state- wide, creating elegant meals for sophisticated palates; award-winning local foods and beverages; and more farmers markets than ever before. Maine offers some of the best public golf in New Englandand lots of it, with twenty new courses built since the late 1980s. With plenty of diversity in layout, topography and difficulty, you know we have the course youre going to love. We also have, by the way, the most dazzling viewsof mountains, lakes, rivers and bays. Golfers from away are always welcome, and there are plenty of activities for non-golfing companions. For more information, see page 58 and www.golfme.com. Photo courtesy Sunday River

With its more than 5,000 miles of coastline, one of the best ways to explore Maine may be
from the deck of a ship. Stately green pine trees, white barked birch trees and the flame red mapleleaves of fall contrast with the steel blue waters that outline the rugged beauty of the land as youbegin your journey up the coast. Puffins, whales, harbor seals and an occasional bald eagle
will play hide and seek as your ship enters one of Maines charming seaport villages or walkable cities. As you near the dock,
you may see lobstermen pulling their traps or children searching the beach for sea glass treasures.
Once on land, well greet you with authentic Maine hospitality and show you an exciting range of activities. From the famed L.L. Bean Outdoor Discovery Schools to coastal mansions, including the summer White House of two
U.S. presidents, to Acadia National Park with its magnificent sceneryof soaring cliffs, cobblestone beaches and glacier-carved mountains,
theres something for everyone.Cruises begin in May and sail among Maines coastal regions through
November. Contact one of 20 different cruise lines or your travel agent today and discover for yourself the magic of the Maine Coast.
