Maine offers world-class fishing, lifelong memories

Fishing in Maine is always rewarding, whether you are an experienced fly angler working on that perfect presentation for a trophy trout or a five-year-old youngster skidding across the ice toward the waving flag of a trap.

Maine is home to 6,000 lakes and ponds and more than 32,000 miles of rivers and streams. With so many waterways, you are sure to find at least a couple of special fishing holes, as well as numerous hot spots known for producing trophy trout and salmon. Maine is known as the last stronghold for eastern brook trout, with over 90% of the country’s wild lake and pond brook trout residing in Maine.

“There’s an opportunity to catch one of these beautiful fish no matter where you like to fish—rivers, streams, ponds or lakes,” said Governor Paul R. LePage. “Whether you are a Maine resident or a visitor, I am pleased that you chose to fish in our state, and I hope that you will enjoy the experience and the memories for years to come.”

Maine is also recognized and praised for our abundant landlocked salmon. Anglers from New England and beyond flock to their favorite waters throughout the state for the thrill of catching one of Maine’s leaping landlocks.

Maine is also gaining national recognition for our fantastic bass fishing. Smallmouth bass in Maine are well known as fierce fighters and offer outstanding opportunities throughout the state. Many of our southern lakes give anglers a chance at a trophy largemouth.

Maine also offers exciting fishing opportunities for children, as well. Maine has 47 waters in 13 counties that are open exclusively to children 15 and under. These ponds are stocked with trout and open only to kids to give them an increased chance of catching a fish of which they are sure to be proud.

“There is no doubt that if a child has early success fishing, they can become hooked for a lifetime,” said Chandler E. Woodcock, Commissioner of the Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife. “It’s a wonderful way to share time outdoors; it teaches children important life lessons; and creates memories that will last a lifetime. Take the time this year to pass on a tradition and gain a fishing partner. Take the kids fishing.”

The Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife appreciates your interest in fishing and your support of our agency and natural resources. Revenue generated by license fees goes directly into enhancing our fisheries, providing a world-class fishery for you, your kids and future generations.

Thank you for fishing in Maine.

Governor Paul R. LePageCommissioner Chandler E. Woodcock

How to Use this Freshwater Fishing GuideThis book is a compilation of fishing spots recommended by regional fisheries biologists.

• Decide which management region you will be in. If you are not sure of the region but know the town, refer to the town list for each region on the following pages, then flip to that region in the book.

• Decide which species you would like to catch. Review the waters listed under that species to see which ponds are nearby or accessible according to the method of fishing or gear you plan to use. To see how to access the water, or determine where it is, refer to the listed map and section for the DeLorme Maine Atlas and Gazetteer.

• Consult our Fishing Rules and Regulations book for the water you want to fish in order to comply with all current regulations.

Identify your CatchFor rules and regulations purposes it is vital that you can identify your catch.

Here are some simple tips that will help you identify your catch.

Landlocked Salmon (LLS)—Salmon are coldwater fish that rely on the presence of smelts for species success. They are identified by a slightly forked tail and silvery scales with small dark spots on the dorsal and lateral sides. They may sometimes appear to have a bluish coloration on their operculum (gill plate cover).

Lake Trout (LKT)—Lake trout, also known as togue or lakers, are coldwater fish that can grow quite large. Like salmon, they routinely prey upon smelts, but can adapt to eat other available forage including aquatic insects and smaller fish. They have a deeply forked tail, white leading edges on their fins, and can be distinguished from salmon by having creamy white spots on a gold to green background on their sides, whereas salmon have black spots on a silver background.

Brook Trout (BKT)— Brook trout, also known as squaretails or speckled trout, are coldwater fish that are opportunistic feeders. They will eat aquatic insects and smaller fish and thrive in clear, clean, well-oxygenated waters. Brook trout populations are heavily influenced by their environment. Brook trout can be easily identified by their red spots, each of which is surrounded by a blue halo. They have white leading edges on the fins, and a worm-like vermiculation pattern on their backs.

Brown Trout (BNT)— Brown trout are a coldwater fish capable of handling a wider range of water temperatures than most other coldwater fish. They are opportunistic feeders. They are identified by red and black spots, square tails, and a large, spotted adipose fin.

Rainbow Trout (RBT)— Rainbow trout are a coldwater fish capable of handling a wider range of water temperatures than most other coldwater fish. They are opportunistic feeders. They are identified by a light background with tiny dark spots on their sides and a faint to bright pinkish coloration on their operculum (gill plate cover) and down their sides. Their caudal and dorsal fins also have small dark spots.

Splake (SPK)— Splake are a hybrid cross between lake trout and brook trout. As a hybrid, their features may sometimes resemble one or the other parent species more. They will eat aquatic insects and smaller fish but are more resilient to temperature fluctuations than brook trout. Splake can be easily mistaken for Brook Trout or Lake Trout, but can be identified by their red spots (lacking the blue halo for which the brook trout are known), white leading edges on the fins, and a worm-like vermiculation pattern on their backs.

Smallmouth Bass (SMB)—Smallmouth bass are warmwater fish that are opportunistic feeders. They are distinguished from their largemouth cousins by a jaw that doesn’t reach past the center of the eye. Both species have a spiny and a soft rayed dorsal fin. They may have red eyes and sometimes may have vertical dark stripes.

Largemouth Bass (LMB)—Largemouth bass are warmwater fish that can be identified by a jaw that extends past the center of their eye and by the black lateral band running down the center of their sides.

Stop the spread of invasive plant species! Check your boat, motor, trailer, and fishing gear for any

pieces of plants before entering and after taking out of any body of water!

Please Help Stop the Spread of Invasive Fish and Plants Maine is lucky to have some of the country’s most pristine, healthy waters that are full of aquatic diversity and trophy fish. These waters provide endless outdoor opportunities for anglers and others who recreate on them, but they are also threatened each year by invasive fish and plants. An invasive species is any type of fish or plant that is put into a body of water where that species does not already exist. Invasive fish compete for food and habitat with native fish, may prey on smaller native fish and can forever change the natural balance of an aquatic ecosystem. By Maine law, any sport fish must be killed immediately after the decision to keep the fish has been made. This helps stop the introduction of invasive species. It is illegal, harmful and irresponsible to move any live sport fish other than baitfish. When it comes to invasive plants, some plants are more than able to strangle a body of water. These plants are fast-growing and can multiply, grow and spread into a thick blanket. This can prevent sunlight from penetrating deeper into the water and inhibit the natural growth of algae and plankton which are necessary food for small fish. Once an invasive plant kills plankton, small fish are likely to starve, which in turn can cause detrimental impacts on larger fish and the entire body of water. Once an invasive fish or plant has established itself in a body of water, it is extremely difficult to eradicate them. Eradication efforts are costly, can carry their own risks and are not always successful. It is the duty of those who enjoy using Maine’s waters to protect them against invasive species. To prevent the spread of invasive fish, don’t move any live fish (other than baitfish) and immediately kill the fish you are keeping prior to transporting. If you see or suspect someone is moving live fish, contact the Maine Warden Service immediately at 1-800-Alert-Us. To prevent the spread of invasive plants, check your boat, motor, trailer and any other gear that touches the water. Remove any bits and pieces of plants on your gear before leaving the launch. Don’t assume a dry plant is dead – some invasive plants can dry out while on equipment, re-saturate when exposed again to water and survive to spread in the next body of water it enters. As anglers, we all take great pride in the diversity and purity of Maine’s waters. We must all work together to stop the spread of invasive fish and plants so that they don’t kill Maine’s aquatic treasures.

SEBAGO LAKE REGIONRegion A

The Sebago Lake region offers the greatest diversity of angling opportunities for both warmwater and coldwater fisheries. The region provides excellent year-round fishing for landlocked salmon, brook trout, splake, lake trout, brown trout, rainbow trout, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, perch and chain pickerel. Stocking maintains most lake and pond fisheries for salmon and trout. Wild brook trout are common in most small streams. Reclaimed ponds offer quality brook trout fishing during the open water fishing season. - Francis Brautigam, Regional Fisheries Biologist

Tips for Taking Kids FishingFishing with children can be very rewarding and educational. Here are some tips for taking them along.

Be relaxed: As you head out the door, leave behind the tension and take along a smile, an open mind, and a lot of patience.Make it fun: Above all else, make the fishing trip fun and safe. Don’t measure the success of the trip by the number or size of fish caught. Make the trip successful simply by having a fun, safe time outdoors. Praise children for their patience and cooperation. Make it a shore thing: Teaching children to fish from shore has some important advantages. It provides them more opportunity to go on their own or with friends when they are old enough. Give the first few lessons at a local park, farm pond, or a lake with a dock or gentle shoreline where children can run and play when their attention span runs short. If and when you progress to a boat, be sure to have the proper safety equipment for you and your youngster.Fish for little fish: Catching fish is important; size isn’t. Start new anglers off on species that are plentiful and more easily caught. Popular fish for beginners are sunfish or perch. Most kids prefer to catch lots of fish versus big fish. Larger fish can be sought when the child has developed basic fishing skills.Start with the basics: Begin with simple equipment and bait. Use simple spincasting equipment, a bobber and a hook with live bait, as it will work well for a variety of fish species. Be sure the equipment your child uses is in good working order to avoid any unnecessary frustration.Teach skills: People, regardless of their age, enjoy fishing more when they are in control and have the ability to do it themselves. Resist the temptation to do things for your children. If you are using live bait, teach them how to put it on the hook themselves. Teach them how to tie their hook onto their line and how to cast. On future trips, help them develop these skills and their self-esteem, as they begin to master them.

BELGRADE LAKES REGIONRegion B

The Belgrade Lakes Region extends from central to midcoast Maine and provides a variety of fishing opportunities. Landlocked salmon and lake trout can be found throughout the interior of the region, and brook trout and brown trout can be found virtually region-wide. This area supports numerous populations of largemouth and smallmouth bass that are robust and attract anglers from throughout the country. - Jason Seiders, Regional Fisheries Biologist

DOWNEAST REGIONRegion C

The Downeast Region has an exciting mixture of both coldwater and warmwater fishing opportunities from its scenic coastal plain to its undeveloped, tranquil interior. Anglers visiting eastern Maine will have no trouble finding the fish species that suits them. From vibrantly colored brook trout or silvery salmon to hard-fighting smallmouth bass or the eager biting schools of white perch, it’s hard to beat the Downeast Region for fishing diversity. —Greg Burr, Regional Fisheries Biologist

RANGELEY LAKES REGIONRegion D

The Rangeley Lakes Region extends from the upper New Hampshire border to the easternmost edge of the Upper Kennebec River drainage. Landlocked salmon, lake trout, and smallmouth bass are all popular and plentiful fish species that are regularly caught by anglers, but brook trout are by far the most targeted. Most of the region’s lakes, pond, rivers, streams, and brooks are well-suited for brook trout and offer an array of different types of fishing opportunities for them. Regardless of what you fish for, this region provides wonderful fishing adventures. —Dave Howatt, Assistant Regional Fisheries Biologist

MOOSEHEAD REGIONRegion E

If you are in search of native or wild brook trout, then the Moosehead Lake Region is the place to be. There are hundreds of lakes, ponds, and streams that support self-sustaining brook trout populations and many have never been stocked. The Moosehead Lake Region is situated in northwestern Maine in the largely undeveloped North Woods. Anglers can enjoy the unique experience of fishing in remote areas for brook trout, salmon, and lake trout. The centerpiece of the region is Maine’s largest lake: Moosehead Lake, which at 40 miles long, offers a big lake fishing experience. If you’re looking for a moving-water experience, there are numerous large rivers that provide great fishing for wild brook trout and salmon, including some year-round opportunities and nearly every beaver bog and small stream contains native brook trout. —Tim Obrey, Regional Fisheries Biologist

PENOBSCOT REGIONRegion F

From the highlands and trout ponds of Baxter State Park to the lowlands and bass fisheries of the lower Penobscot River, the Penobscot Region is probably the most diverse in the state in terms of both land terrain and fisheries. The region offers a myriad of opportunity for high quality landlocked salmon, lake trout, brook trout and smallmouth bass fisheries in a stunningly beautiful setting in a variety of lakes, ponds, rivers and streams throughout the north central section of the State of Maine. —Gordon Kramer, Regional Fisheries Biologist

FISH RIVER LAKES REGIONRegion G

Northern Maine boasts some of the most robust populations of brook trout in the eastern United States. Anglers visiting here will find excellent fishing for brookies whether they prefer small streams, small ponds, large lakes, or large rivers. One of the most unique features is fishing for trout on large rivers. A good example is the Aroostook River, the namesake for Maine’s northernmost County, that flows from the remote woodlands of the North Maine Woods to the farmland of the east. For anglers seeking a trophy salmonid fish, there are several larger lakes, especially on the Fish River Chain of Lakes, that support above average landlocked salmon and lake trout. —Frank Frost, Regional Fisheries Biologist
