MAIN TYPES OF THERMO-RESINS ASSOCIATED WITH
INDUSTRIAL PLASTIC RECYCLING
UNDERSTANDING RESINS
Plastic resins are created through a “cracking process”. This process entails heating the hydrocarbons to break them down into larger molecules. These larger molecules make compounds that form chains known as polymers. Different types of polymers are combined to make the plastic resin pellets which are then used for a number of different applications.
POLYETHYLENE RESIN
Abbreviation: PE
Frequency of usage: Common
Primary usage: Packaging, plastic bags, geomembranes, bottles.
Softening point: 176°F
Mechanical properties: rates low for hardness, strength, rigidity, and friction.
POLYPROPYLENE RESIN
Abbreviation: PP
Frequency of usage: Common
Primary usage: Packaging, labelling, stationary, and textiles
Softening point: 340°F
Mechanical properties: Has the lowest density of commodity plastics, typically tough and flexible, and economical.
POLYSTYRENE RESIN
Abbreviation: PS
Frequency of usage: Common
Primary usage: Packaging peanuts, discs, containers, trays, tumblers, and disposable utensils
Softening point: 464°F
Mechanical properties: is slow to biodegrade, poor oxygen barrier, hard, and brittle.
PS
STYRENE-ACRYLONITRILE RESIN
Abbreviation: SAN
Frequency of usage: Common replacement for PS
Primary usage: Food containers, kitchenware, battery cases, and plastic optical fibers.
Softening point: 220°F
Mechanical properties: Typically transparent, brittle, and easily resistant to boiling water.
SAN
ETHYLENE VINYL ACETATE
Abbreviation: EVA
Frequency of usage: Average
Primary usage: There are 3 different types of EVA that all have distinct uses. EVA can be used for film, hot adhesives, cleats, and organic solvents.
Softening point: 110°F
Mechanical properties: Has a varying density, typically tough, and flexible.
