Chelseigh Maegan Darling is 12 years old, I have lived in Shelf all my lifeand I attend Hipperholme and Lightcliffe High School. My hobbies are

going to Guides, attending stage 84 performing arts and I enjoy swimming.

I also like to visit and help my 101 year old Great Nan Emma Verity also of Shelf.

Chairman’s Ramblings…Hi Everyone,

By the time you are reading this hopefully the weather has become more summer like. At the

time of writing with about six weeks to Shelf Gala it is more like November, cold, wet, snow

forecast in Scotland – maybe through, it’s nothing new, the old saying “ne'er cast a clout ’til

May be out” must have something to substantiate its existence. According to the records it has

been the coldest spring since 1962 and the fifth coldest since records began. I wonder whether

the Shelf Gala committee in 1962 had the same thoughts?

However, I digress, weather is always a problem for shows, fetes, galas etc. and last year was

no exception with many been cancelled at the last minute due to the terrible summer weather –

Great Yorkshire Show and Bingley Show to mention two local ones. Shelf Gala wasn’t

cancelled but we had our problems and decisions to make at a late stage. On Friday morning,

the day before the Gala, at 10am, myself, two field marshalls, and one of the fairground

operators were stood in Shelf Hall Park in pouring rain deciding the fate of the Gala. We

consulted weather apps on mobile phones, talked about BBC weather forecasts, discussed

ways we could put the gala on and the consequences of cancelling it and decided, possibly in

our madness, that we would go ahead with the gala.

AccuWeather on our mobile phones said it would come fine around 4pm that day and

Saturday would be fine and sunny with chance of a small shower. That was good enough for

us! We decided that we would keep as many vehicles as possible off the park and only allow

the bare necessity of vehicles on there. The large fairground rides went in the car park, the

arena was repositioned, the football was placed at the bottom of the park, the toilets were

moved and boards were used in the entrance to the park to make access possible to the

vehicles etc. We were on the way!

Saturday came, it was a bit dull early on but then the sun came out and we had a brilliant day

with one predicted short shower at 4.15pm which lasted about 10 minutes. Our faith had been

rewarded.

This year we hope the summer comes. In the arena we have for your entertainment a local

young group on stage, Godsend, we have a Karate Display, Freerunners and the return of the

Qaws-e-khuzah Belly Dancers. Outside the arena we have Brian Llewellyn’s Punch & Judy

Show and all the usual attractions: Tea Tent, Beer Tent, Fairground, Food outlets, Stalls,

Football Competition, Painting Competition, hopefully there is something for everyone.

Please support all the stalls and activities and help us, the committee, make this a gala to

remember while raising enough monies to contribute to the local charities and organisations.

As chairman of the 2013 Shelf Gala Committee I would like to thank the sponsors of this

Gala: Corel Windows, Interface, Blackshaw Holdings and Robinsons Farm Shop. A big thank

you to all the advertisers in our programme who support us year after year. Please support

these people and use the services they offer. I would like to thank the gala committee. Without

these people the gala would not exist and also, as chairman, for not giving me such a hard time

at meetings. Finally, to all the people who have helped us in any way to set up this gala and

very important, clear it all away for another year and leave Shelf Hall Park as though no one

had been there in the afternoon. HAVE A GREAT DAY.
