Good afternoon, and welcome to Walton Lanefor today’s Southern Combination FootballLeague Division Two fixture against LancingUnited. We extend a warm welcome to the visitingplayers, officials and supporters from Lancing, and to today’s match referee, Chris White, fromWorthing.Lancing come here as one of the form sides inthe Division, currently sixth in the table with sixwins from their last eight in all competitions, including a tremendous 3-2 away win at fellownewcomers, Jarvis Brook last time out – a sidewho sit above them in third. They will also be fresh after their SussexIntermediate Cup tie with Forest Row wascalled off last Saturday due to the rain. It’s a competition we have our own ambitions inthis season – and one of the club has neverwon, but we were able to advance into the last16 with a 5-1 away win at Mid SussexChampionship side, Polegate Town. The new white-and-red Joma away strip madeits first outing with our commemorative Poppiesproudly worn on the shirts, as we paid our ownrespects on Remembrance weekend, prior to agame perhaps fittingly played out at Polegate’sWar Memorial ground in Eastbourne.PoppiesForKits.co.uk – well known now ingrassroots football – do a fantastic job everyyear, with the kit transfer proceeds going directto the Royal British Legion. It’s the least we can do to remember ourservicemen, both of the distant and morerecent past.Despite being without regular starters in CallumFewell, Jake Lafferty and top goal scorer, MarcoGiambelardini, the gap in standard ultimatelyshowed, as we went into a 4-1 half-time lead, with two goals from Alex Barnes, and one-a-piece from Louis Bell and club captain,
James Wilson – enjoying his first start since April, following time out with an LCL knee strain.Ollie Gilbert – today’s programme cover - thenadded gloss to the score with a powerful headeron the hour. We’ll host either Shoreham U21 or Westfield onDecember 10 (1.30pm k.o) for a place in thequarter-finals. They meet on Wednesday night(23rd).The reserves suffered a stinging 8-1 reverse hereagainst United Services Portsmouth in theWyvern Combination East. They travel toHamble Club this afternoon (3pm).Better fortunes for our u18’s who had a fantasticresult against Bognor Regis Town, winning 5-3here on Sunday. Harry Lidster scored his secondhat-trick in three appearances, with Kofi Slaternetting a brace. They host Felpham Coltstomorrow (10.30am).The u16’s remain top of the Arun & Chichester‘C’ Division, despite a 5-0 loss at Midhurst &Easeboune. Rick Kennett’s side visit WorthingTown White tomorrow. We last met Lancing United at Croshaw in theirfirst ever game in the SCFL back in August –somewhat spoiling the party in their openingfixture at the higher level, coming away with a2-0 victory at the West Sussex Premier Divisionchampions. However, they have adapted very well to life inDivision Two, recently announcing theappointment of a new management team inplace in brothers, Luke and JJ Banasco-Zaragoza.Luke was boss at Steyning Town’s u21development side last season, while JJ is aformer goalkeeper at Ryman League side,Worthing.Significant work behind the scenes spearheadedby club Secretary, Glenn Souter, has driven grantfunding totalling six figures, and resulted in afantastic new sports pavilion with widercommunity benefit, alongside a much improvedplaying surface; a pitch perimeter fence andobligatory dugouts for their inaugural season inthe SCFL.The club have come a long way since the days ofchanging in Portakabins, and you get the feelingthey’re not done yet. Sensibly, they also haveone eye on their future, with five new youthteams launched this season as part of theirthriving ‘Colts’ section.Enjoy the game and thank you for your support!
SUSSEX COUNTY FA INTERMEDIATE CUP
3RD ROUND
By Alan Price
Two goals from Alex Barnes helpedsteer the Robins into the last sixteen ofthe Sussex County FA Intermediate Cupwith relative ease, at the expense of aPolegate Town side that foundthemselves out of their depth at thisthird round stage.Polegate ply their trade in the MidSussex Championship – some twodivisions below Bosham in the pyramid -and the gulf in class showed – even withregular starters in Callum Fewell, JakeLafferty and top goal scorer, MarcoGiambelardini all absent. It was perhaps fitting this fixture wasplayed out at the War Memorial Groundnear Eastbourne on this Remembranceweekend, albeit in wet and difficultconditions. But it didn’t take long for Bosham toadapt, in taking the lead in the firstminute through Alex Barnes as therobins came flying out of the blocks. The ball fell loose on the edge of thebox, and Barnes latched onto it andfired a low effort into the bottomcorner, giving Bosham the perfect startto a match that could have been apossible banana skin. The reds continued to dominate, despite very tricky conditions andcaptain, James Wilson, doubled the leadafter only nine minutes leaving Polegate
frustrated at just what was happeningbefore them.On this occasion Bradley Miles chippedthe ball over the static defence allowingWilson to easily beat a weak offside trapand slot home past keeper, Brett Rust.Less that quarter of an hour had passedand the Robins had made it three whenLouis Bell got in on the act to grab hisfirst goal of the game, finishing anexcellent set piece move from a cornerwith Graeme Dowden ably assisting.Rust was beaten at his near post with anexquisitely directed effort from Bell thatleft the keeper with no chance.Polegate regrouped and George Whitelyfired in through a crowd to give the MidSussex side some hope but, soon afterthe half-hour Bosham had made it four.It was Barnes again with his second ofthe game, reacting quickest to poke theball home after Rust could only get amere finger to a delicate chip from Miles– to send Bosham into the break with avery comfortable lead. The second half was more of the samewith Bosham on the front foot, hittingthe woodwork and constantly testinggoalkeeper Rust.Kieran Magee on the other hand wasrarely tested with his defence relativelycomfortable throughout.Just after the hour Oliver Gilbert made itfive with a well directed and powerfulheader from a Dowden corner to endthe game as a contest, and it was aneasy task to see out time to claim aplace in the last sixteen to set-up ahome tie with either Shoreham U21’s orWestfield on December 10 – these twosides lock horns on November 23.
