Hello! We’re in the last two weeks of the legislative session here
in Denver and working hard to make sure we get
everything done by closing day (known as “sine die”),
which is May 11 this year. I’ll send out a recap of the
session once things wrap up, but in the meantime I wantedto send out one more update about what’s been on the top
of my agenda recently.
Fighting for You on the House Floor
First, I wanted to share with you part of some key debateson bills, which I participated in from the well of the House.
“Ban the Box”
I spoke against House Bill 16-1388, Employer Hiring
Criminal History Employee – the so called “ban the box”
bill – which proposes banning the check box on
employment applications where applicants must disclosetheir criminal history. In my view, this is a disguised way
to create a new protected class for criminals, including
felons, similar to the protected classes for age and
disability, exposing small to medium sized employers to
discrimination lawsuits encouraged by progressives and
brought by trial lawyers. Additionally, removing the box
would take away the opportunity for convicted felons to,

prior to any interview, provide potential employers with
information regarding mitigating factors. Below is a video
where I speak to these concerns.

Public Lands
I also spoke against Senate Bill 16-021, Recognition of
Public Lands Day. While this had a “warm and fuzzy” title,
those of us on the West Slope know it’s not that simple.
Below are two videos where I speak about this bill.

Climate Change Debate

I was one of two representatives who hosted the first ever
legislative climate change debate at the Capitol. Democrat
Representative Max Tyler brought in Scott Denning, a
professor at Colorado State’s Department of AtmosphericSciences, to argue that manmade global warming is a real,
major concern and that we can do something about it. I
brought in Jay Lehr, Ph.D., science director from the
conservative think tank The Heartland Institute, for the
contrary position. Both scientists were very informative
and well spoken, and the attendees seemed veryimpressed. Many legislators attended and hopefully some
were swayed to the “right” conclusion.
Marijuana Interim Committee
I successfully presented a request for an interim
committee to study the cost-benefit analysis of legalized
marijuana in Colorado. The issues are massive, both
economic and societal. My goal is to have the elected
body more engaged as to these ever evolving and
troublesome issues, notwithstanding their Constitutionalnexus. The committee has been approved for three large
meetings in 2016, but I anticipate that it may need to be
continued in 2017 for more meetings. This committee will
also consider any gaps in the collection of data related to
legalized marijuana and analyze ongoing studies and

reports.
End of Session Social – Taste of the West
Slope
During the last day of the session, Representative
Rosenthal and I will be hosting a very special social and
celebratory event on the outside west deck of the House
Chamber. There, we will be introducing and supporting
House District 54 by enjoying wines and peach productsfrom Palisade, Enstrom’s toffee, lavender, and hard apple
cider from Delta. I hope to turn this into an annual event.
I look forward to coming home for the summer soon! Until
then, I’ll continue to fight for all of you.
