Footy season is here and the Maiden Gully Junior Football Club is ready to go.

After a busy pre-season organising teams and support we now have two under 9 and one

under 12 team hitting the field. Positions are still available in all sides so if your son/daughter

wants to be involved with an inclusive, fun and determined club, please come along and join in

at any training night.

Auskick (5-9 yr olds) is on Tuesday nights between 4:00 to 5:00pm; U9 is Wednesday nights between 4:00 to 5:00pm and U12

is Thursday nights between 4:30 to 5:30pm.

The club is still running on a limited committee and with the ongoing growth of Maiden Gully, support is required to help keep

the club moving forward. With a busy season ahead, fundraising activities are planned and all are invited to get involved.

Please visit our website at www.maidengullyjfc.sportingpulse.net/ to stay up to date and informed with what is coming up.

To ensure a successful season and the continued development and growth of the Club, it is important that all those with an

The function of a Lions Club is to work with the community so that community may benefit

by projects not entirely available through other venues. During the first three months of

2013, the Maiden Gully/Marong Lions achieved a great deal.

In January several hundred people gathered at the Maiden Gully Lion’s Park to celebrate an

Australia Day Community Breakfast.

The Lions run district auditions for Youth of the Year quests, and frequently sponsor local youth into the Victorian or

National finals.

The Lions BBQ trailer is often seen at Council information evenings, auctions, school fetes and private functions.

The Maiden Gully/Marong Lions Club is a member of Victoria’s Keep Australia Beautiful Adopt a Highway program and

has accepted responsibility for clearing the Calder Highway of rubbish from Maiden Gully to Marong. The March 3

effort resulted in one and a half tonnes of junk cleared and $9.85 cash profit from can collection. It is a job taken up

twice a year.

During a weekend in mid-March, the Club travelled to Balranald for the annual fire wood collection. Some 30 tonne of

fire wood was sawn, loaded and delivered back to Bendigo. The Otis Foundation became the main beneficiary for 2013.

The remainder will be available to households in need throughout the winter months.

The Club pays out a lot in cash assistance. Several thousand dollars were donated to such varied groups as research into

Motor Neurone Disease, the Marong Pre-school, the Marong Fire Brigade, towards a remote school in Zambia as well as

help to private individuals striving to achieve their personal goals.

Between now and Christmas the Maiden Gully/Marong Lions will receive numerous requests for assistance. These are

all examined on merit, with preference trending towards local community and individual needs. The most satisfying

assistance is given without fanfare and without obligation.

The Lions now have a dedicated person to care for the Children’s playground at Maiden Gully. Footpaths are raked,

rubbish cleared and the BBQ sparkles. In addition more fill is to be spread around the play area and additional shrubs

planted. We are thankful for the voluntary work of this person and trust the picnickers will assist with less leftover

lunch on benches and more use of bins provided. The park is becoming a popular meeting place and playground. The

Lions would welcome any suggestions for improvement.

The Lions cannot function unless they enjoy a vibrant executive and robust membership. As with most community

based organizations – with the exception of the Maiden Gully Progress Association – maintaining active membership is

on ongoing chore. There is no limit on becoming a member. What is required is an interest in your local community

and an investment of your time in service towards worthy and ongoing projects. Contact: John Smith 54496239.

Since it’s inception in June 2011 members of Common Ground have involved themselves in the community by doing a

weekly Mainly Music programme for mums with toddlers; Holiday Kidz Club for Grades 2 to 6 children, and Christian

Religious Education (CRE) at the Maiden Gully Primary School.

Sunday services were initially held in the Maiden Gully Primary School Activities Centre, but at the beginning of 2013

relocated to the Maiden Gully Community Hall. A bigger area was required to seat growing numbers attending services.

Common Ground is an outreach initiative by the Anglican Diocese of Bendigo with Rev. Roger Rich appointed as its

missioner to the local area. He is assisted by Brendan McDonald, also licensed to minister at Common Ground.

While establishing its identity as a Bendigo church, Common Ground espouses a set of values which include worshipping

God in Spirit and truth; being Biblically based; bringing God’s healing love to the wounded in spirit; nurturing children, and

extending a warmth of friendship to all who come.

Sunday services are held in the Maiden Gully Community Hall at 10 am. It’s a, ‘Come as you are,’ welcome for anybody

wanting to find out more about Christianity or making a fresh start. For further information please ring or check out any of

The first term holiday program culminated in a red carpet evening for young people

attending the Holiday Kidz Club. The theme ‘Movie Madness’ was aimed at getting

the creative juices flowing with the children writing scripts based on the parables of

Jesus, and then building props and acting out the stories.

Richard Tatti, a professional video producer spent hours editing the short films for the

Friday nights showcase event. The young stars, in evening dress and bow ties, were

photographed as they walked the ‘red carpet’, and later received awards for best

actor, best film and best set. It was not only a learning experience for the young

people, but a means of building their self- esteem.

A great team contributed to the success of the Holiday Club. A special thanks to

Stuart Conkie (OAC Ministries), Margaret Butcher, Christine Higham, Brendan and

Virginia McDonald, Roger and Regina Rich, Carol Davis, Fiona Phelan, Richard and

Glenis Tatti and Melinda Tatti.

Edited versions of the short films will be uploaded to commongroundlife.com website for parents to see again.

CCCClean Up Maiden Gully Daylean Up Maiden Gully Daylean Up Maiden Gully Daylean Up Maiden Gully Day

The Maiden Gully Progress Association joined forces with the Maiden Gully Marong Lions Club on Sunday 3rd of March

2013 to collect rubbish along the Calder Highway as part of the Keep Australia Beautiful Adopt a Roadside Program. A

small number of volunteers attended, and we were able to clear rubbish from the intersection of Edwards Road and the

Calder Highway, right through to the railway line at Marong.

Two full ute loads, 1.5 tonnes, of rubbish was collected on the day, which was a fantastic effort and we would like to

thank the volunteers who assisted us on the day.

Unfortunately, the exercise also highlighted to the volunteers a disturbing problem - the fact that some people think it is

OK to throw rubbish out the window as they drive along through our beautiful countryside.

It is actually an offence to throw litter from a motor vehicle.

The Environment Protection Authority (EPA) Victoria has a

public litter reporting service which enables members of the

public to report people who throw litter from a Victorian-

registered motor vehicle. As a result of this service, more

than 20,000 people are reported to EPA every year.

The 24 hour hotline number is 1300 372 842 (1300 EPA VIC),

or if you visit the EPA website at www.epa.vic.gov.au, you can

download an app to be able to report an offender while you

are travelling.

The Maiden Gully Progress Association will conduct another

clean up along the Calder Highway in late July / August,

focusing on the area from Edwards Road through to Specimen

Hill Road. The date will be published in our next newsletter.

We encourage residents to get involved and to show the

public by example that we will not tolerate litter on our roadways.

MaiMaiMaiMaiden Gully Precinct Structure Plan Updateden Gully Precinct Structure Plan Updateden Gully Precinct Structure Plan Updateden Gully Precinct Structure Plan Update

The Maiden Gully Precinct Structure Plan project continues to progress.

The Project Manager, Steve Abbott from the City of Greater Bendigo's Strategy Unit,

presented the Vision and Conceptual Structure Plan at a Community Workshop at the

Maiden Gully Community Hall on Monday 26 March 2013.

The Project is now moving to Stage 5 and a Draft Precinct Structure Plan is now

available. Copies of the Draft Plan can be obtained from the City of Greater Bendigo

offices in Lyttleton Terrace, Bendigo, or by visiting the City of Greater Bendigo website

at www.bendigo.vic.gov.au.

It is important to note that Stage 5 is a key stage for Community Consultation. Over the

next six weeks, there will be several opportunities for residents and other stakeholders

to discuss the Draft Plan, with a two day Listening Post planned for the Maiden Gully

Community Hall on a Friday and Saturday in late May/early June. Steve Abbott will

also be attending the next Public Meeting of the Maiden Gully Progress Association on Monday 3rd of June 2013, where the

Draft Plan will be one of the topics discussed. Keep an eye out for the next Community Bulletin, on the City of Greater

Bendigo website and in local papers for details of opportunities to discuss the Draft Plan.

As we have seen already with the Project, the views of Maiden Gully residents will be listened to and amendments made to

the Plan where good ideas are presented.

Should you require any additional information on this project, please refer to our website, attend our next Public Meeting

on Monday 3rd of June 2013 or contact Steven Abbott, Project Manager on 5434 6287 or [email protected].

• A central riparian corridor with 2-3ha of wetlands and a 0.5ha permanent body of water.

• A comprehensive pedestrian and cyclist network within the neighbourhood and connecting to Maiden Gully town

centre and beyond to Greater Bendigo’s comprehensive trail network.

• Convenient access to a bus route.

• A variety of open spaces, including a district level play space, to support active and passive recreation.

The amendment is currently being displayed until 7 June 2013 for public comment.
