We are all looking forward to 2015, as we pursue our goal of engaging our community – you! – in exploring the history and culture of Central Alberta. We have a wonderful range of activities that will inspire and move you.

The MAG is pleased to announce that, starting in January, visitors to our website will be able to see some of our collection online. We will be adding new records to the collections page each month so please check it out: www.reddeermuseum.com .

Don’t miss our Family Day MAGapalooza! on Monday, February 16. There will be fun activities for families of all ages. As our special Family Day gift to our community, starting on February 16 we will offer free admission to our exhibition galleries every day of the week. We have planned many new activities for people of all ages. Be sure to watch our website and Facebook page for details.

In June, the MAG is privileged to host the Walking With Our Sisters project. We have been working with our

community to present this moving tribute to the estimated 1,700 Indigenous women who are missing and murdered. As Aboriginal leaders call for a national inquiry into the causes of this tragedy, this memorial invites visitors to walk through a sacred space and remember all those who have been taken from us. Everyone is invited to get involved in this extraordinary project.

Walking With Our Sisters is a memorial installation that pays tribute to the lives of the missing and murdered Indigenous women from across this nation. Over 1800 pairs of vamps, or moccasin tops, have been created and donated by artists from around the world to draw attention to this otherwise largely overlooked national crisis.

We are looking for people to give their time and energy to see this project become what Central Alberta needs it to be. There is no shortage of ways to be involved. From organizing committee members, to youth

engagement, to fundraising; the list is long and the call for assistance is loud. Walking With Our Sisters will forever change the way the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery positions itself in our community. We’re so excited and privileged to be able to do this work.

If you have any questions, or would liketo learn more about this or any upcoming project, please call us at 403-309-8405 or email [email protected]

Mother Earth Essentials, based out of Edmonton, Alberta, has created a custom, loose berry blend of tea for the Walking With Our Sisters project.

The MAG’s small artefact consolidation project is underway. When complete, the reorganized collections will help our community and visiting researchers have better access to the wealth of knowledge our objects hold about the vibrant history of Red Deer and Central Alberta.

Your help is needed. If you would like to volunteer with the project, meet new people who share an interest in history, and explore the behind-the-scenes world of the MAG, Please contact the Red Deer Museum + Art Gallery at 403-309-8405 or email [email protected].

Looking for Volunteers to

assist with artefact storage

ASK

Valerie

A: We are always

grateful when someone from the community offers material to the museum. That’s how the Collection was originally built. However, we are quite strict with what we accept.

We’re looking for unique items that share stories about the people, their cultures, lifestyles and history. We have about 80,000 pieces stored, so space is at a premium. If we have similar items already in the collection, we will not accept duplicates.

Any objects or works of art we consider must be in good condition. It’s important to have well-documented information about the objects that are signifi cant and specifi c to Red Deer and/or Central Alberta. Finally, we treasure the details so we want to know who owned the items and how they were used.

It’s worth noting that the MAG doesn’t provide appraisal and authentication services and suggest you try antique dealers or auctioneers.

Kirstin started at the MAG as a guest artist for our MAG Saturdays program in April of 2014. She has since moved in to the reception area during the week, while remaining a permanent MAG Saturday artist.

Interested in everything arts and crafty from a young age, Kirstin attended Red Deer College from 2012-14 and received her diploma in Visual Art. While she is most at home with ceramics and the process of building with clay, she also enjoys painting. Kirstin lives in Red Deer, with her dog Berkley and her cat Molly.

She has spent years working directly with the collections and therefore has extensive knowledge in various areas. The Collections represent a broad sample of materials related to the City and surrounding districts in of Central Alberta.

Q: I have something from my family that I want to donate

to the MAG. What do I do?

Evening Gown

Acc: 1984.156.11a-cGift of the Estate of Annie Parsons

Marcia Ella Bull married Dr. Richard Parsons in 1905. The couple had four children: MacGregor, William, Ella and Margo. During the Spanish Infl uenza epidemic, she worried about her husband’s health as he dealt with patients every day. Sadly, it was Ella herself who died of the disease in 1918.

Nun’s Habit

Acc: 2011.10.la-kGift of Larry Dubitz

This style of habit (clothing) was worn by nuns of the congregation of the Daughters of Wisdom from its inception until 1962. Three nuns from France and two from Quebec arrived in October 1908.

Under the leadership of Mother Marie Agathe, they oversaw the completion of St. Joseph’s convent and boarding school.

Evening Coat

Acc: 1977-67-42Gift of the Estate of Mr. Herbert Spenceley

This metallic evening coat was worn by Elizabeth Fletcher, who later became Mrs. Spenceley. The pointed sleeve edges and the asymmetrical closure of this evening jacket point to the infl uence of 1920s Art Deco design. Elizabeth was active in her community. She played piano at dances in the school and was a charter member of the Balmoral Women’s Institute, established in 1926.

Skating Outfit

Acc: 2000.44.2a-jGift of Doris Ballantine

This knitted skating outfi t was made by Doris’ mother, Mrs. Anna Vollmer Ballantine, in the 1940s. The outfi t shows the infl uence of Olympic skating champion, Sonja Henie. The MAG has the complete costume, as well as the knitting pattern used. Monarch Knitting Co. Ltd. Patter 811, page 22, Book 78.
