Magnet Major Courses and Electives COURSE OPTIONS 2020-2021 All magnet students at Thurman White Academy of the Performing Arts will participate in one of the following majors as defined by program availability. Majors: Band Theatre Media Arts Orchestra Dance Choir Visual Arts *Students will select a second elective in support of their major. Please note that students will pay elective fees for each elective class. Major: BAND BEGINNING BAND The Beginning Band is open to all students with no previous band experience. This course applies basic fundamentals of music and specific performance techniques to the instrument being studied. Much emphasis will be placed on reading music and general musicianship. This group will perform in several concerts throughout the school year. Students will be required to attend these performances as they are a part of the class grade. This course will help to prepare students for future placement in Intermediate or Advanced Band. Each band student will pay a $40.00 band fee at the beginning of the school year. The cost will include the following items: method book/music, band shirt, cleaning kit. **See note on musical instruments. INTERMEDIATE (CONCERT) BAND This group is open to all students by audition or placement by the band director. Concert Band is designed for students who have successfully completed the skills required in Beginning Band. Areas of emphasis include intermediate fundamentals of music reading and the specific performance techniques of the instrument being studied. The Concert Band will participate in the CCSD All-City Festival. Students will also be required to attend several school performances that will be a part of the class grade. The appropriate use of technology is an integral part of this course. This group will perform in the CCSD Band Festival. Regular after school sectional attendance will be required. JAZZ BAND III (Beginning) This one-year course is designed to introduce the skills centered around the jazz swing style and develop the skills necessary to become a well-rounded musician (improvisation, auditions, intonation, style, doubling, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic precision, and more). Students will be introduced to jazz improvisation and its relationship with scales and chord progressions. Students must already play a jJzz Band instrument (or have instructor approval to switch to a jazz band instrument), audition, and receive instructor’s approval for enrollment into this course. This group may perform at concerts and school activities. Students will be required to attend various performances as a part of the class grade. Each Jazz Band student will pay a $40.00 Jazz Band fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation.

JAZZ BAND II (Intermediate) This one-year course is designed to develop skills necessary to become a well-rounded musician (improvisation, auditions, intonation, style, doubling, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic precision, and more). Students will continue to use the skills from Jazz III to improve jazz improvisation skills and knowledge of scales and chord progressions. Students must already play a Jazz Band instrument, audition, and receive instructor’s approval for enrollment into this course. This group may perform at concerts and school activities. Students will be required to attend various performances as a part of the class grade. Each Jazz Band student will pay a $40.00 Jazz Band fee at the beginning of the school year. JAZZ BAND I (Advanced) This one-year course is designed to introduce the instrumental music student to historical and contemporary jazz band literature and techniques to increase appreciation of jazz and Big Band music. The focus is on learning to play various styles of jazz and commercial music, including swing era, be-bop, cool jazz, and fusion (jazz-rock). Students will have an opportunity to develop advanced skills and concepts in jazz improvisation. Students will work to learn to play music by ear. Solos are also encouraged. Students must already play a Jazz Band instrument, audition, and receive instructor’s approval for enrollment into this course. This group will perform at MANY concerts and school activities. Students will be required to attend various performances as a part of the class grade. Each Jazz Band student will pay a $40.00 Jazz Band fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation.

MUSIC PRODUCTION I This one-year course is open to all Band, Orchestra and Choir students. Music Production I is 3-part course consisting of History of American Popular Music, Basic Music Theory, and Intro to Basic Music Recording. History of American Popular Music is designed to explore the timeline of American music from the 1950s to today. Basic Music Theory is designed to develop a basic understanding of music theory on the piano. Students will study the staff, rhythm basics, the piano keyboard, plus Major scales and chords. In Basic Music Recording students will learn the basics of recording, working with the Digital Audio Workstation software Studio One where they will learn to record and edit music. The ultimate goal is to develop students as musicians. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the use of music software and production materials.

MUSIC PRODUCTION II This one year course combines music theory, history of music and the creative use of computers for digital recording as a continuation from Music Production I. Students will explore different aspects of music that define style, form, genre, and period and develop the vocabulary to discuss them. Students will explore the influence of music in society throughout the years while expanding their understandings of musical theory to enhance musicianship. Students will learn more advanced recording techniques and procedures, digital audio editing, studio terminology, microphone technique and Midi recording using professional software, Studio One, while working in our digital audio music lab. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the use of music software and production materials. Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Music Production I and Teacher recommendation.

MUSIC PRODUCTION III This one year course is a continuation of Music Production II. This course offers students an independent, project-based learning environment where they combine their musical and production skills with their wide knowledge of popular music, to create professional sounding music recordings. This course is highly individualized and encourages students to follow the path of their particular musical interests. In addition to their own musical productions, Music Production III students create custom music for the CTV “The Scoop” morning show and collaborate with Media & Film Productions students to create and deliver custom music for their media and film projects. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the use of music software and production materials. Teacher recommendation.

Magnet Major Courses and Electives 2020-2021

PIANO LAB This one year course is designed for students who are interested in learning to play the piano and explore the history of music. Students will learn to play some of the standards of piano repertoire while gaining a thorough understanding of the history and basic concepts of music. The emphasis is on introducing basic concepts of notation, musicianship, and technique. Students will find out how music is constructed and discover the composers and history behind the music. Students will develop good practice habits and learn techniques to increase the muscular agility and flexibility of their hands. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: read music in bass and treble clefs; understand rhythms in basic time signatures, including simple and compound meters; sight read simple melodies; and play all white and black key major and minor five finger patterns. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

PIANO REPERTOIRE Taught in Thurman White’s state of the art keyboard lab, this class will build on the skills learned in Beginning Keyboarding/Piano. Students will continue their study of music theory, composition, piano techniques, music history and music technology, diving deeper into the material and playing music of increased difficulty. Intermediate students will perform solo recital music. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation/ Audition required.

PIANO PERFORMANCE Taught in Thurman White’s state of the art keyboard lab, this class will build on the skills learned in Keyboarding/Piano II. Students will continue their study of music theory, composition, piano techniques, music history and music technology, diving deeper into the material and playing music of increased difficulty. This class will also focus on audition material for high school piano programs. Advanced students will perform solo recital music. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation/ Audition required.

GUITAR I This one-year course is designed for students with no previous guitar experience. Students will receive guidance and direction in solving problems related to playing the guitar at a beginning level and will learn many of the different styles, skills and techniques required to become a successful guitarist. Areas of concentration include: correct posture, note reading, aural skills, flat-picking, singing songs, rhythmic patterns, chord study, finger-picking styles, musical forms, improvisation and performing experiences. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

GUITAR II This course is for students who have already taken Beginning Guitar, or have prior guitar playing experience. Students will review basic fundamentals of guitar playing such as tuning, picking, and music theory. They will also learn major and minor scales, power and moveable chords, and the extended range of the guitar. Each student will be required to pay a $40 fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation.

WORLD DRUMMING Every culture has some form of drumming and this course is a practical, hands-on introduction and exploration of world drumming and rhythm traditions. Students will learn to play various percussion instruments and explore commonalities and differences of global drumming and rhythms. All will learn various hand drumming techniques and improve rhythmic vocabulary with a combination of technical instruction, improvisation and ensemble skills, traditional ‘call and response’ aural learning and various notation and phonetic systems. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

EAR TRAINING/SIGHT SINGING Sight singing and ear training go hand in hand to help vocalize the notes read at the correct pitch. This course introduces students to basic aural, visual and vocal experience in the form of dictation and sight singing in the field of music. Each student will pay a $25.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

Major: ORCHESTRA BEGINNING ORCHESTRA This class is open to students without any prior music experience. Students will have the opportunity to study violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Emphasis is placed on playing fundamentals, music reading, and general musicianship. This course will help prepare students for future placement in Intermediate, Chamber, or Advanced Orchestra. This group will perform at school concerts and other school functions throughout the year. Students will be required to attend these performances as they are a part of the class grade. Each orchestra student will pay a $40.00 orchestra fee at the beginning of the school year. INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA This one-year course is designed for students who have developed skills beyond beginning orchestra. This group is open to all students by audition or placement by the orchestra director. It includes further development of those skills necessary to become an independent musician. The course emphasizes the place of string music in the Western musical heritage and the development in style, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic patterns, and tone throughout history. The importance of sustained group and individual effort is stressed. A progression of technical proficiency is expected. Emphasis will be placed on participating in a variety of performance experiences as they are a part of the class grade. Each orchestra student will pay a $40.00 orchestra fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the following items: method book/music, orchestra shirt, instrument maintenance fee). **See note on musical instruments.

ADVANCED ORCHESTRA This one-year course is designed for students who have mastered the skills of intermediate orchestra. This group is open to all students by audition or placement by the orchestra director. It includes further development of those skills necessary to become independent as a musician. This class includes advanced instruction in music reading, techniques for developing performing skills, and more complex study of theory and musical interpretation. This course emphasizes the place of string music in the Western musical heritage. It concentrates on the development of style, articulation, dynamics, rhythmic ability, and tone inherent to string music performance. The importance of sustained group and individual effort is stressed. Emphasis will be placed on having a variety of performing experiences as they are a part of the class grade. Each orchestra student will pay a $40.00 orchestra fee at the beginning of the school year. CHAMBER ORCHESTRA Chamber Orchestra is an advanced ensemble for the dedicated musician. It is an opportunity to study advanced small group ensemble music and orchestral literature. Members are selected by audition. This class provides opportunities for the further development of advanced instrumental techniques and the performance of unabridged symphonic and string orchestra repertoire. Students perform a variety of orchestral compositions of contrasting periods and styles. Students continue to expand their musical knowledge through the progressive study of harmony, melodic and harmonic dictation, and music history. Guest performers and clinicians will occasionally be utilized in the rehearsal and performance setting. Students will continue the advanced development of instrumental technique, music reading and comprehension skills, independent musicianship, style, critical thinking skills, a deeper understanding of small group ensemble music, and orchestral literature. Literature will contain both Classical and Popular music. Students will perform both in small group ensemble projects and as a large group. CONCERT CHOIR (Intermediate) This class is for seventh and eighth grade girls and boys. Advanced vocal technique, advanced Music Fundamentals and Music Theory are explored, along with both advanced rhythmic and melodic sight reading. This class performs several concerts and festivals per year, singing three and four part advanced level music. Performances are required and are part of students’ grades. This class also gives continued instruction in foreign diction and performing in foreign languages. This ensemble has the opportunity to travel and perform in a National Music Festival in the Spring. Each choir student will pay a $40.00 choir fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the following items: music, music folder and the rental of a formal choir uniform required for all performances.

CHAMBER SINGERS (Advanced) This class is for seventh and eighth grade boys and girls by audition only. Advanced vocal technique, advanced Music Fundamentals and Music Theory are explored, along with both advanced rhythmic and melodic sight reading. This class has a rigorous schedule of concerts and festivals throughout the year, singing three and four part advanced level music. Performances are required and are part of students’ grades. This class also gives continued instruction in foreign diction and performing in foreign languages. This ensemble will travel and perform in a National Music Festival in the Spring. VOCAL WORKSHOP This course is designed for students who want to focus on solo singing and repertoire. Students will learn about stage presence, communication/expression, solo vocal technique, audition skills and how to sing in many different styles including Pop, R&B, Musical Theatre, Classical, Jazz, Folk and more! Recording techniques will be explored in class using our new sound booth and recording software. Students will have the opportunity to refine their skills and work one on one with the teacher, as well as guest performers and local professionals who will be visiting the classroom. PIANO LAB This one year course is designed for students who are interested in learning to play the piano and explore the history of music. Students will learn to play some of the standards of piano repertoire while gaining a thorough understanding of the history and basic concepts of music. The emphasis is on introducing basic concepts of notation, musicianship, and technique. Students will find out how music is constructed and discover the composers and history behind the music. Students will develop good practice habits and learn techniques to increase the muscular agility and flexibility of their hands. Upon completion of this course, students should be able to: read music in bass and treble clefs; understand rhythms in basic time signatures, including simple and compound meters; sight read simple melodies; and play all white and black key major and minor five finger patterns. Each student will pay a $40.00 music fee at the beginning of the school year.

Tech students will be demonstrating practical skills in set design and construction, lights, sound, management, and advertising. SHOW CHOIR (Audition) Can you sing AND dance? This course is designed for students to learn about stage presence, movement, vocal technique and performance of a variety of different popular styles. Show Choir students learn to sing, choreograph and perform in many venues throughout the year, including Disneyland, Lake Las Vegas, Ethel M and on local television. This one-year course takes a unique approach toward choral music by adding choreography and personality to each song. Show Choir is a mixed ensemble that combines the movement of dance and singing to perform literature from various selected eras of musical history. Through this course, students will develop greater musicianship, proper use of breath support, phrasing, interpretation, postures, stage presence, and the other important musical disciplines. MUSIC PRODUCTION I This one-year course is open to all Band, Orchestra and Choir students. Music Production I is 3-part course consisting of History of American Popular Music, Basic Music Theory, and Intro to Basic Music Recording. History of American Popular Music is designed to explore the timeline of American music from the 1950s to today. Basic Music Theory is designed to develop a basic understanding of music theory on the piano. Students will study the staff, rhythm basics, the piano keyboard, plus Major scales and chords. In Basic Music Recording students will learn the basics of recording, working with the Digital Audio Workstation software Studio One where they will learn to record and edit music. The ultimate goal is to develop students as musicians. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. MUSIC PRODUCTION II This one year course combines music theory, history of music and the creative use of computers for digital recording as a continuation from Music Production I. Students will explore different aspects of music that define style, form, genre, and period and develop the vocabulary to discuss them. Students will explore the influence of music in society throughout the years while expanding their understandings of musical theory to enhance musicianship. Students will learn more advanced recording techniques and procedures, digital audio editing, studio terminology, microphone technique and Midi recording using professional software, Studio One, while working in our digital audio music lab. MUSIC PRODUCTION III This one year course is a continuation of Music Production II. This course offers students an independent, project-based learning environment where they combine their musical and production skills with their wide knowledge of popular music, to create professional sounding music recordings. Major: THEATRE THEATRE EXPLORATIONS (Intro to Drama) This year long beginning course introduces students to both the fundamental concepts of drama and the behind-the-scenes actions of the theatre. In this course, students will engage in active storytelling using acting games and exercises as a vehicle. The class focuses upon techniques used in drama, which is an improvisational, non-exhibitional, process-oriented course, where participants are guided by a leader to imagine, enact and build on experiences real and imagined. Creative drama takes the student’s world, creative play, and develops it further, using theatre techniques to develop learning experiences which are for the participants rather than the audience. Students will be exposed to elements of technical theatre including theatre design, production, and management. Students will briefly touch upon costuming, make-up design, and set design. This course provides the foundation for Theatre I and Technical Theatre I classes. Each theatre student will pay a $40.00 course fee to assist with production costs, costumes, and set fees.

TECHNICAL THEATRE This one year course is designed to build upon students knowledge of the behind-the-scenes actions of the theatre. Technical Theatre is a course designed to provide learners with a basic understanding of the aesthetics and practical application of all phases of technical production. This would include the study of all visual aesthetics, the physical theater, scenic design, scenery construction and painting, costuming, lighting, sound engineering, and back stage organization. This course will help students apply and expand their knowledge of theatre design, production, and management. Drawing on fine arts and other disciplines, students work individually and collaboratively to explore the interrelated components of design, production, and management. This course prepares students for further theatrical study and nurtures an appreciation for the many forms of theatre. TECHNICAL THEATRE II Here you will learn advanced skills with hands on experience and personalized attention in set building, props, lighting, audio, video/projection, costumes, make up, designing, and much more. You will get to research, use, create, design and operate all of these aspects and apply to be an actual technician for the Thurman White Academy musicals and plays. We will also attend field trips to venues and backstage tours of local theatres. COMPOSITION AND DESIGN (Beginning Art 6/7) This yearlong course focuses on the basics of design and 2D compositional elements. There will be a strong emphasis on both design and compositional elements to convey mood and purpose within a composition. This course is meant for the student who would like to learn how to draw and gain a basic understanding of art. In this class students will develop a basic knowledge and skill in visual art techniques through the introduction of a variety of media and subject matter. Various styles and artists are considered within their historical context. Problem solving, creativity, and originality are developed through planning, art making, and reflection. Students learn principles and practices of aesthetics and critique. Through discussion and production, connections are made between visual art and disciplines outside of the arts. This is a beginning level class which will focus on the basics of design and 2D compositional elements which will be expanded upon in future design courses. INTRO TO MEDIA TECH This one-year course is designed to introduce students to the use of technology as a creative tool. Students will gain a working knowledge of computers, as well as acquire a basic knowledge of graphic design, multimedia presentations and computerized publications. Students will be introduced to various software programs in graphics, audio, video, multimedia, and desktop publishing. Public speaking skills will be enhanced through oral presentations. Students will explore various mediums, learning different aspects of each of the publication courses offered at Thurman White (yearbook, broadcasting and media production). MEDIA PRODUCTION This one-year course is designed to reinforce students’ use of technology as a creative tool. Students will expand their knowledge of multimedia presentations incorporating graphics, audio, and video, in addition to an introduction to animation, cartooning, and web-design. FILM PRODUCTION If you are a student that is fascinated with video cameras, recording, video editing, and film making in general then this is the class for you. However, if you have an interest in these aspects but feel like you do not know enough about the equipment and software, no problem. We will start from the basics and by the end of the year you will be a film making rockstar. You will have knowledge in Mac computers, digital file management, video cameras, iMovie and Adobe Premiere (video editing software), video formatting, audio mixing and video playback. Some projects will include; 30 second short film, product commercial, lip sync music video, documentary, guest interview and 3-5 minute movie final. Prepare for an exciting year of fun projects and video computer skills that will train you for a career in the world of Film/Video Productions. FILM STUDIES Do you like watching movies? In this class you will study the development of the American and Classical film as an art form and a social phenomenon. The course surveys classical and contemporary genres, eras, trends, directors, studios, and influential people in the industry. Students will focus on the techniques of acting as they apply to the electronic and film media. Class work will focus on class discussion and criticism of various films. Film studies is a course intended to familiarize students with the particulars of film history as well as to provide them with a chance to analyze film as a visual art form. This course should appeal to any and all students who love to watch movies and discuss them.

NEWSCASTING 7/8 This one-year course is designed for the study and practice of basic elements of broadcasting technology with the major emphasis on script writing, video recording and editing, and publication of news and other information through Challenger Television. This class will be performance-based requiring the production of daily announcements and student-created educational video broadcasts on CTV, The Scoop. DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION I Do you like making up your own heroes and villains? Do you like to create your own worlds and creatures that inhabit them? Well then, this is the course for you! This course is designed for the student who has developed skills beyond the beginning drawing level and wants to further develop their personal visual expression through the art of concept design and illustration. they will be taking their drawing skills and creating their own comic heroes and villains, make their own worlds and design creatures that may inhabit them. This course is open to those students who have passed a full year of Composition and Design, Graphic Design I, or Beginning Multi-Media. GRAPHIC DESIGN I Do you consider yourself an artist, but love technology too? Well, this is the place for you. Harness that creative energy and learn how to create on industry-leading programs such as Adobe Illustrator to create imaginative designs you can call your own. You will learn how to draw professional looking artworks such as designing logos and making your own mood monsters ...all while learning the lingo and logistics of one of the world's top art careers. Get ready for an exciting year harnessing your creative graphic energy. This class is a requirement for Visual Arts Majors. GRAPHIC DESIGN II This class builds upon what we learn in Graphic Design I and now teaches students how to create promotional posters for movies, inspiration, and fun. They will get a taste of real-world experience by designing the promotional posters for our amazing theatre productions AND learn about the language of propaganda by creating ads with advertisement videos. Here students learn how to branch out their techniques from Illustrator into Photoshop and enter another realm of the graphic design world- Marketing. Students must take Graphic Design I and be recommended in order to take this class. Students are required to pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the year to cover class materials and supplies that will be used throughout the year.

SCULPTURE/CERAMICS (Intermediate) Ceramics and Sculpture is a course constructed to encourage students’ imagination, creativity and ability to think in three dimensions. First semester, students will gain knowledge of various sculptural methods and materials (papier mache, plaster, foam, wax). Through various projects students will learn utilize visual elements and design principles in manipulating space and creating three dimensional forms. They will also become familiar with the tools and techniques necessary in creating three dimensional forms and safe studio practices. Second semester students will go into more depth in handbuilding procedures as well as wheel-thrown techniques with clay. A variety of both utilitarian and non-utilitarian projects will be constructed. Students will also engage in fundamental glazing and firing techniques. All projects will include exposure to various clay tools and vocabulary. Students will also gain perspectives in various historical trends and cultures as well as careers related to ceramics. PAINTING AND DRAWING (Intermediate) Painting and Drawing is a course designed to continue the exploration of 2-D design. Composition, the elements and principles of design, and the techniques and concepts of both drawing and painting will be covered. Students will work with a variety of drawing and painting media, including acrylic, watercolor, tempera, pen and ink, charcoal, chalk and oil pastels. Major: DANCE DANCE I (Intro to Dance) This course is designed to give students an introduction to the historical role dance has played in world cultures, as well as an opportunity to learn fundamentals of jazz, ballet, theatrical and cultural dance styles. Introductory composition and choreography will also be taught. Students will be required to furnish dance apparel at their own expense. Each dance student will be required to pay a course fee of $40.00 at the beginning of the school year. *Students with prior dance experience wishing to enroll in a higher dance course may attend a placement performance interview for possible placement in Dance II or Advanced Dance.

DANCE II (Intermediate) Students must have successfully completed General Dance and/or receive instructor approval through a performance interview in order to take this course designed to expand on dance content taught during General Dance. Students will increase their knowledge of the historical role dance has played in world cultures. They will also have an opportunity to build upon their technique in jazz, ballet, tap, hip hop, theatrical, and cultural dance styles. DANCE III (Advanced) Students must have successfully completed Intermediate Dance (Dance II) and/or receive instructor approval through a performance interview in order to take this course designed to expand on dance content taught during Intermediate Dance. Students will increase their knowledge of the technique learned in Dance I and II and be able to apply it to different choreographic styles learned. Students in this level will be considered the performance group of Thurman White Academy and be able to represent the dance program at school events, CCSD Showcases and outside competitions. Students will be required to furnish dance apparel at their own expense. Each dance student will be required to pay a course fee of $40.00 at the beginning of the school year. *Placement performance interview required.

CAPSTONE (8th grade ONLY) *Required for all 8

th grade Dance Majors

Using improvisation and choreography elements learned over the previous 2 years, by the end of this course students will have their own dance reel and repertoire of choreography. They will also be able to direct their own choreography with other students and showcase their performance at the end of the year. Each student will be required to pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

DANCE PROGRESSION/TECHNIQUE I OR II This course will focus on turns, leaps, across the floor movement and varieties of dance technique. Students will be able to master these skills within their level and be able to get more one on one attention to excel at movement within their choreography learned for performances. Each student will be required to pay a $40.00 choir fee at the beginning of the school year. *Dance Progressions I or Teacher Recommendation required for Dance Progressions WORLD DANCE This class will focus on exploring the history, cultures, and other elements within dance. Each quarter students will be able to explore the history of dance styles, different cultures, and how they all apply to dance today. Examples of some cultures to be explored are African, Latin, Folk and Hip Hop. This class will allow students to connect the history and culture of dance to their technique and choreography learned throughout the year. Each student will be required to pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

CHORUS Beginning Girl’s and Boy’s Chorus is open to all beginning sixth, seventh and eighth grade girls. Proper vocal technique, beginning music fundamentals, and music theory are explored, along with both rhythmic and melodic sight reading. This class performs several concerts per year, singing two/three part music. This class also gives an introduction to foreign diction and performing in foreign languages. Performances are required and are part of students’ grades. This group may perform at school concerts, District Festivals, and other school functions. Each choir student will be required to pay a $40.00 choir fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the following items: music, music folder, and a choir shirt required for all performances. **Students may also complete a placement interview for entrance into the Advanced Chorus.

SHOW CHOIR (Advanced) This one-year course takes a unique approach toward choral music by adding choreography and personality to each song. Show Choir is a mixed ensemble that combines the movement of dance and singing to perform literature from various selected eras of musical history. Through this course, students will develop greater musicianship, proper use of breath support, phrasing, interpretation, postures, stage presence, and the other important musical disciplines. In this class, students will study and perform vocal music in the Jazz, Pop, and Swing styles. Students will learn the art of movement and dance as well as the enhancement of the vocal rendition of various works. Show Choir is appropriate for all abilities and is a fantastic way to step into the art of music. Students must participate in an audition to be considered for placement in this course. Students will be required to pay a $40.00 course fee at the beginning of the year to assist with music costs.

MUSICAL THEATRE This one year course, open to all choir, drama and dance majors, provides instruction on the fundamentals of acting, singing, and dancing skills required for the musical theatre genre. Students will rotate through choir, dance, and theatre skills each week, having exposure to a variety of the arts. Students in this course will learn proper technique for speaking and singing, music reading skills, choreographic principles, dance terminology, stage terminology, and acting principles. Students will also learn blocking, choreography, solo skills and some of the technology involved in musical theatre productions. Additionally, students will learn audition techniques and the art of taking direction well. Students will be expected to perform both in groups and solo throughout the year. Each musical theater student will pay a $40.00 course fee to assist with production costs, costumes and set fees.

INTERMEDIATE MUSICAL THEATRE This course is a continuation of Intro to Musical Theatre for the student that wishes to continue to more fully build their repertoire. Students will continue building their foundations in dance, voice, and acting as it pertains to the world of musical theatre. Students will focus on more solo/small group performances. Students enrolled in this class are highly encouraged to audition for opportunities to showcase their skills in various performances throughout the year. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation required. Student must have completed Intro to Musical Theatre.

ADVANCED MUSICAL THEATRE This course is a continuation of Musical Theatre for the serious student that wishes to pursue this art and develop more advanced skills in auditioning and performance. Students will continue building their foundations in dance, voice, and acting as it pertains to the world of musical theatre. Students enrolled in this class are highly encouraged to attend Nevada State Thespians Regionals Conference in January to compete. Emphasis is placed on teaching confidence, self-expression and the art of live entertainment! Students will pay a $40.00 course fee at the beginning of the year to assist with music costs. In this class students will develop a basic knowledge and skill in visual art techniques through the introduction of a variety of media and subject matter. Various styles and artists are considered within their historical context. Problem solving, creativity, and originality are developed through planning, art making, and reflection. Students learn principles and practices of aesthetics and critique. Through discussion and production, connections are made between visual art and disciplines outside of the arts. SCULPTURE/CERAMICS (Intermediate) Ceramics and Sculpture is a course constructed to encourage students’ imagination, creativity and ability to think in three dimensions. First semester, students will gain knowledge of various sculptural methods and materials (papier mache, plaster, foam, wax). Through various projects students will learn utilize visual elements and design principles in manipulating space and creating three dimensional forms. They will also become familiar with the tools and techniques necessary in creating three dimensional forms and safe studio practices. Second semester students will go into more depth in handbuilding procedures as well as wheel-thrown techniques with clay. A variety of both utilitarian and non-utilitarian projects will be constructed. Students will also engage in fundamental glazing and firing techniques. All projects will include exposure to various clay tools and vocabulary. Students will also gain perspectives in various historical trends and cultures as well as careers related to ceramics. PAINTING AND DRAWING (Intermediate) Painting and Drawing is a course designed to continue the exploration of 2-D design. Composition, the elements and principles of design, and the techniques and concepts of both drawing and painting will be covered. Students will work with a variety of drawing and painting media, including acrylic, watercolor, tempera, pen and ink, charcoal, chalk and oil pastels. The end goals are to increase artistic self confidence, increase one’s understanding of drawing /painting and to produce successful works. DIGITAL ILLUSTRATION I Do you like making up your own heroes and villains? Do you like to create your own worlds and creatures that inhabit them? Well then, this is the course for you! This course is designed for the student who has developed skills beyond the beginning drawing level and wants to further develop their personal visual expression through the art of concept design and illustration. they will be taking their drawing skills and creating their own comic heroes and villains, make their own worlds and design creatures that may inhabit them. This course is open to those students who have passed a full year of Composition and Design, Graphic Design I, or Beginning Multi-Media. GRAPHIC DESIGN I Do you consider yourself an artist, but love technology too? Well, this is the place for you. You will learn how to draw professional looking artworks such as designing logos and making your own mood monsters ...all while learning the lingo and logistics of one of the world's top art careers. GRAPHIC DESIGN II This class builds upon what we learn in Graphic Design I and now teaches students how to create promotional posters for movies, inspiration, and fun. They will get a taste of real-world experience by designing the promotional posters for our amazing theatre productions AND learn about the language of propaganda by creating ads with advertisement videos. Here students learn how to branch out their techniques from Illustrator into Photoshop and enter another realm of the graphic design world- Marketing. THEATRE EXPLORATIONS (Intro to Drama) This year long beginning course introduces students to both the fundamental concepts of drama and the behind-the-scenes actions of the theatre. In this course, students will engage in active storytelling using acting games and exercises as a vehicle. The class focuses upon techniques used in drama, which is an improvisational, non-exhibitional, process-oriented course, where participants are guided by a leader to imagine, enact and build on experiences real and imagined. Creative drama takes the student’s world, creative play, and develops it further, using theatre techniques to develop learning experiences which are for the participants rather than the audience. Students will be exposed to elements of technical theatre including theatre design, production, and management. Students will briefly touch upon costuming, make-up design, and set design. This course provides the foundation for Theatre I and Technical Theatre I classes. THEATRE I (Intermediate Drama) This year long course builds upon concepts introduced during Theatre Explorations. This elective allows students to experience the fundamentals of acting training. Throughout the course, students will participate in various exercises. These include theatre games, as well as the performance of scenes and monologues. Not only for aspiring thespians, this course also improves public speaking skills, enhances inventive thinking, and promotes a healthy self-esteem. Being a more advanced level acting class, the materials used are longer and more sophisticated. In addition to performing more challenging contemporary scenes and monologues, students are required to perform Shakespearean scenes and one-act plays. Class will focus on student performance and participation through demonstration of various aspects utilizing vocal, physical and emotional techniques. ADVANCED PLAY PRODUCTION (Advanced Drama) This one year course is the advanced class for both Theatre I and Technical Theatre. In this class students will take all the skills learned in Theatre I and Tech Theatre and apply them in a real life format. This class focuses on ensemble and teamwork, advanced acting and technical skills development, and problem solving as we produce the school musical and other productions. Tech students will be demonstrating practical skills in set design and construction, lights, sound, management, and advertising. Acting students will be learning a variety of advanced techniques in voice and movement, dancing and singing, as well as production responsibilities. This class is by teacher invitation only and requires the prerequisite of Theatre I or Technical Theatre I. This would include the study of all visual aesthetics, the physical theater, scenic design, scenery construction and painting, costuming, lighting, sound engineering, and back stage organization. This course will help students apply and expand their knowledge of theatre design, production, and management. The primary focus for this class is for students to understand how to take a professional photograph using their camera. They will learn how to implement composition and design elements to transform a photograph from a snapshot of a moment to a professionally rendered photograph. We will explore several types of photography, such as product photography, action photography, and macro photography. This course is open to those students who have passed a full year of Graphic Design I, Intro to Media Arts, or Composition & Design. FIBER ARTS Fiber arts is designed to introduce students to art of fiber and textile art. Students will create works that focus on the transition between two and three dimensional artworks. Several fiber and textile processes will be explored, including; crochet, weaving, needle felting, batiking, fabric collage, sewing, and mixed media. You will have knowledge in Mac computers, digital file management, video cameras, iMovie and Adobe Premiere (video editing software), video formatting, audio mixing and video playback. Some projects will include; 30 second short film, product commercial, lip sync music video, documentary, guest interview and 3-5 minute movie final. The course surveys classical and contemporary genres, eras, trends, directors, studios, and influential people in the industry. Students will focus on the techniques of acting as they apply to the electronic and film media. Class work will focus on class discussion and criticism of various films. Film studies is a course intended to familiarize students with the particulars of film history as well as to provide them with a chance to analyze film as a visual art form. GRAPHIC DESIGN II This class builds upon what we learn in Graphic Design I and now teaches students how to create promotional posters for movies, inspiration, and fun. They will get a taste of real-world experience by designing the promotional posters for our amazing theatre productions AND learn about the language of propaganda by creating ads with advertisement videos. Here students learn how to branch out their techniques from Illustrator into Photoshop and enter another realm of the graphic design world- Marketing. Students must take Graphic Design I and be recommended in order to take this class. Students are required to pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the year to cover class materials and supplies that will be used throughout the year.

TECHNICAL THEATRE I This one year course is designed to build upon students knowledge of the behind-the-scenes actions of the theatre. Technical Theatre is a course designed to provide learners with a basic understanding of the aesthetics and practical application of all phases of technical production. This would include the study of all visual aesthetics, the physical theater, scenic design, scenery construction and painting, costuming, lighting, sound engineering, and back stage organization. This course will help students apply and expand their knowledge of theatre design, production, and management. Drawing on fine arts and other disciplines, students work individually and collaboratively to explore the interrelated components of design, production, and management. This course prepares students for further theatrical study and nurtures an appreciation for the many forms of theatre. Each theatre student will be asked to pay a $40.00 course fee to assist with production costs, costumes and set fees.

TECHNICAL THEATRE II Here you will learn advanced skills with hands on experience and personalized attention in set building, props, lighting, audio, video/projection, costumes, make up, designing, and much more. You will get to research, use, create, design and operate all of these aspects and apply to be an actual technician for the Thurman White Academy musicals and plays. We will also attend field trips to venues and backstage tours of local theatres. This advanced course will give you the upper hand in a career of Technical Theatre by learning all these skills at such an early age. Each student will pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the school year. Teacher recommendation.

FILM STUDIES Do you like watching movies? In this class you will study the development of the American and Classical film as an art form and a social phenomenon. The course surveys classical and contemporary genres, eras, trends, directors, studios, and influential people in the industry. Students will focus on the techniques of acting as they apply to the electronic and film media. Class work will focus on class discussion and criticism of various films. Film studies is a course intended to familiarize students with the particulars of film history as well as to provide them with a chance to analyze film as a visual art form. This course should appeal to any and all students who love to watch movies and discuss them.

THEATRE I (Intermediate Drama) This year long course builds upon concepts introduced during Theatre Explorations. This elective allows students to experience the fundamentals of acting training. Throughout the course, students will participate in various exercises. These include theatre games, as well as the performance of scenes and monologues. Not only for aspiring thespians, this course also improves public speaking skills, enhances inventive thinking, and promotes a healthy self-esteem. Being a more advanced level acting class, the materials used are longer and more sophisticated. In addition to performing more challenging contemporary scenes and monologues, students are required to perform Shakespearean scenes and one-act plays. Class will focus on student performance and participation through demonstration of various aspects utilizing vocal, physical and emotional techniques. This course prepares students for further theatrical study and nurtures an appreciation for the many forms of theatre. ADVANCED PLAY PRODUCTION (Advanced Drama) This one year course is the advanced class for both Theatre I and Technical Theatre. In this class students will take all the skills learned in Theatre I and Tech Theatre and apply them in a real life format. This class focuses on ensemble and teamwork, advanced acting and technical skills development, and problem solving as we produce the school musical and other productions. Tech students will be demonstrating practical skills in set design and construction, lights, sound, management, and advertising. Acting students will be learning a variety of advanced techniques in voice and movement, dancing and singing, as well as production responsibilities. This class is by teacher invitation only and requires the prerequisite of Theatre I or Technical Theatre I. The final project for this class is the school musical which may require additional time outside of class either before, after school, or on weekends for rehearsals. Each Musical Production student will be required to pay a $40.00 course fee to assist with production costs, costumes, and set fees. **Teacher recommendation required.

MUSIC PRODUCTION I This one-year course is open to all Band, Orchestra and Choir students. Music Production I is 3-part course consisting of History of American Popular Music, Basic Music Theory, and Intro to Basic Music Recording. History of American Popular Music is designed to explore the timeline of American music from the 1950s to today. Basic Music Theory is designed to develop a basic understanding of music theory on the piano. Students will study the staff, rhythm basics, the piano keyboard, plus Major scales and chords. In Basic Music Recording students will learn the basics of recording, working with the Digital Audio Workstation software Studio One where they will learn to record and edit music. The ultimate goal is to develop students as musicians. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the use of music software and production materials.

MUSIC PRODUCTION II This one year course combines music theory, history of music and the creative use of computers for digital recording as a continuation from Music Production I. Students will explore different aspects of music that define style, form, genre, and period and develop the vocabulary to discuss them. Students will explore the influence of music in society throughout the years while expanding their understandings of musical theory to enhance musicianship. Students will learn more advanced recording techniques and procedures, digital audio editing, studio terminology, microphone technique and Midi recording using professional software, Studio One, while working in our digital audio music lab. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the use of music software and production materials. Pre-requisite: Successful completion of Music Production I and Teacher recommendation.

MUSIC PRODUCTION III This one year course is a continuation of Music Production II. This course offers students an independent, project-based learning environment where they combine their musical and production skills with their wide knowledge of popular music, to create professional sounding music recordings. This course is highly individualized and encourages students to follow the path of their particular musical interests. In addition to their own musical productions, Music Production III students create custom music for the CTV “The Scoop” morning show and collaborate with Media & Film Productions students to create and deliver custom music for their media and film projects. Each student will pay a $40.00 music lab fee at the beginning of the school year. The fee will include the use of music software and production materials. Teacher recommendation.

LEADERSHIP This year-long course provides students with the

opportunity to develop leadership, organizational, and

communication skills as they build school and

community relationships. This course provides an

opportunity to study, practice and develop group

leadership and organizational skills. These skills

include, but are not limited to: decision-making skills,

problem-solving techniques, communication skills,

leadership roles, human-relations skills and

understanding the need for social intelligence and civic

responsibility. Students put into practice the skills

learned while dealing with the school administration,

the students and the community. The content focuses

on communication (oral and written), office procedures,

record management, leadership concepts and skills,

planning and implementing projects, human-relations

skills and characteristics of contracts. Leadership

students are responsible for building school spirit,

organizing assemblies and thematic days, and

developing a positive student climate. Students who

are enrolled in the course will have the ability to run for

student body officer positions. Application required.

CAFETERIA 7/8 This work experience class will provide experience for students in food service, money handling, making change, efficient customer service, the use of the computer, and following directions. Students will learn responsibility, honesty on the job, and respect for authority in an actual work environment. Cafeteria workers receive a grade and are eligible to receive daily free lunch. Pre-requisite: Students must maintain a 2.0 GPA, good attendance and good citizenship.

STUDENT OFFICE AIDE This course will provide a year-long experience for students in assisting one of the main offices by greeting adult visitors, conducting tours, using copy machines, working effectively with fellow employees and proper office (phone) etiquette. Pre-requisite: Students need a C+ average with no F grades and no U marks for citizenship, good attendance, and teacher/counselor approval. Application required.

SPANISH I This one-year course, open to seventh and eighth grade students, is designed to facilitate a student’s acquisition of the Spanish language at the novice to high level. The focus is on communication in Spanish incorporating an understanding of Hispanic cultures, connecting with other disciplines, comparing one’s native language to Spanish, and participating in multi-cultural communities. The course provides practice in correct use of basic vocabulary and language structures to enable students to function effectively within realistic settings. The instructor will conduct 90% of the class period in Spanish. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation. Students are required to pay a $40.00 fee at the beginning of the year

SPANISH II HONORS — On-line This one-year course is designed for students who have successfully completed Spanish I or who demonstrate a proficiency level of novice-high as identified in the foreign language proficiency guidelines established by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL). Students continue to refine proficiency in the target language with the end-of-course goal of demonstrating proficiency at the intermediate-low level. This course is designated as honors level by the accelerated instructional pacing and depth of content. The focus is communication in the target language incorporating understanding of the target cultures, connecting with other disciplines, comparing native language to the target language, and participating in multicultural communities. This course will be facilitated on-line through NVLA. This course fulfills one of the elective credits required for high school graduation.

SPEECH & DEBATE Speech and Debate is a year long introductory course that covers a variety of styles of public speaking and formal debate. Through research and practice students will become familiar with styles of speech and debate through instruction, research, and practice. Each unit will incorporate performance assignments that require students to demonstrate their abilities within the classroom setting. Opportunities to take their knowledge to competition at the local and state level may be made available to students as well through extracurricular programs. Instructional practices incorporate integration of diversity awareness including appreciation of all cultures and their important contributions to society. The appropriate use of technology and digital media are an integral parts of this course.

STEM—ENGINEERING EXPLORATIONS Engineering exploration is a year long course that explores the characteristics and processes relating to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). This course includes aspects of engineering / architectural design, robotics, food cultivation, and general science. Students will study the interaction between design concepts, science, conservation, engineering and math. Students will use the design process to learn the basics for robotics and coding, including a city-wide robotics competition. Fundamentals of design drawing necessary to graphically communicate ideas will be used to communicate with techniques such as scale drawings, line quality, and sketching . Students will learn the process of design by improving upon campus processes or structure. This will be a project-based class wherein students work with professionals from the field to make their visions come alive. The process that transforms abstract design principles, ordering principles, and spatial organizations will be explored as students design, create, and maintain gardens, build robots and code games. **Students must have a solid foundation and interest in math and science skills to be successful in this course. Each student will pay a $25.00 fee at the beginning of the school year.

PUBLICATIONS (Journalism/Creative Writing) This one-year course will teach students the fundamentals of writing in both fiction and non-fiction formats as they contribute to the creation of the school newspaper. Students will learn the basic elements of journalism with a focus on reporting, interviewing, writing, layout, and production. In addition, the course will also cover elements of creative writing, as students will learn to write creatively in order to contribute to the fiction section of the school newspaper. Students are required to pay a course fee of $40.00 at the beginning of the year to cover materials
