usingvelvet,allpatternpiecesmusthavethenapgoinginthesamedirection,otherwisetheymightlookliketheyareslightlydifferentcolors.(Toworkouthowthenaplays,strokethefabricuntilthefibersliesmooth–thebottomofyourclothshouldbethedirectioninwhichthefibersallpoint.)Layoutalltenpiecesasshown.Pindownthepaperpatternstothecloth.Important–youwillneeda1cmseamallowancearoundeachpiece!Makesureallthepiecesarefirmlypinnedinplacebeforeyoustartcutting.Youdon’twantyourpatternstoslip,ortofindyoudon’thaveenoughclothforallyourpieces.Afteryouhavecutoutallofthepiecesfromthemainfabric,youcanmoveontotheliningfabric,fromwhichyouwillcutoutpartsH(theArms)andI(theHood).Hint! Fold the fabric in two, so you can cut out two of each piece in one go.

ho odThehoodneedsaliningifitistolookasimpressiveasagenuinemagickarobe.Cutouttwohoodpiecesfromtheliningfabric,includinga1cmseamallowance.Watchout!Liningfabricisreallyslipperyandhardtoworkwith,sopinitcarefully.Tip:useoneofyourhoodpiecesfromtherobefabric,withthe1cmseamallowancealreadyincluded,asaguide.Pinthesectionstogether,carefullynotingwhichedgesremainopen,andwhicharetobestitched.Sewmarkedseams.Usingscissors,cutsmallnotchesintheseamallowanceunderthechinandalongthetopofthehood,toallowtheseamtoliesmoother,andthetiptobepushedthrough.Becarefulnottocutthroughtheseam.Repeatwiththelining.

Agenuinemagickarobehasasilverliningbutgoldworksbetterinpractice.Importantinformationoncuttingouttheedging:readcarefully!Takeyourmeterofgoldenfabric,folditonthediagonalandcutstrips8cmwide.Placethelininginsideoutoverthehoodpiecewhichisrightsideout.Takeastripofgoldfabricandtuckitbetweentheliningandhood,framingthefaceopening.Makesurethegoldisfacingoutwardsbetweentheliningandhood.Pincarefullyandsewinplace.Nowpushtheliningthroughtotheinside–thisishardtodescribe,butyoucanprobablyworkoutwhatitshouldlooklike!Now sew the other end of the gold fabric inside the hood, first pinning it to keep it secure while you sew it.Thenfoldituptotheoutsideofthehood.Foldovertheseamallowance,pininplace,andthensew.Youcanuseadecorativequiltstitchfortheedgeifyouwish(seeillustration).Theliningforthebottompartiseasier.Make sure it’s lined up nicely, then pin the gold strip to the golden lining and run a stich straight down. Fold the gold edge around and complete the piece as shown.

sleeVesThesleevesalsohavealining:cutandsewthepiecesthesamewayyoumadethehood(seeillustrations).Threadthelininginsideoutofthesleevewhichisrightsideup.Putagoldstripebetweentheliningfabricandthesleevesjustlikethehood,pinandsew.Makesurethattheliningendsupontheinsideandfoldtheseamallowanceongoldfabric,straightstitchandmakeaquiltseam.sleevespinneddowninthearmholeontherobe,cansometimesbedifficulttogetthemtogetherarmholemaybetoosmall,soyoucansewwithlargestitchesandcreasethesleevecapandthenmakethesleevesfit.Pincarefullyandsewslowly.

Chest PieCeFinally,thechestpieceandlining(madefromthesamefabricsastherestoftherobe)arepinnedrightsidetogether,thehemisfoldedoverontothewrongside,andthenstitchedinplace.Again,aquiltstitchisrecommendedhere.Don’tforgettomakesmallcutsintheseamallowancesothenecklineliessmooth.Placetherobeonaflatsurface,asshowninthefinalpicture,andpinthechestpieceinplace.Pintheleftsidetoabout15cm below the seam between the front and the skirt partandleave10cmopenononesideoftheneckline.Sewthepiecestogetherusingaquiltstitch.
