THE GREETER October 2016 FROM THE RECTOR A time to celebrate and to give thanks! As we enter the fall season, we traditionally enter what is known as “stewardship season”. Usually we may dread these words or think of years past when it felt like all the church was asking for was money. This year I hope you have a different experience. The theme of this fall is “make a difference-grow with us”. After having been here for over seven years now as your rector, I know you are a generous and giving parish on many levels. When I first arrived, we were running about a $25,000 cash deficit and borrowing from other funds to pay the bills. We also had over $734,000 in debt. The debt has been completely eliminated and what was once a big deficit is now a healthy surplus. We have much to celebrate! As a part of using our resources wisely, and knowing we had a surplus, we invited parishioners during the summer to submit proposals to the vestry for funding. As it turned out, the requests were just a bit higher than what we allocated, but the vestry decided to fund all the projects as the overage was so small. These include: Help with the Dominican Republic adult trip: $2,500 Help with the Dominican Republic youth trip: $2,500 A Dominican Republic Celebration dinner to be held Sunday evening October 23 rd : $800 New Choir vestments: $5,000 Law enforcement appreciation breakfast to be held January 2017: $750 Wi-Fi upgrades for a guest network and a secure network for church computers: $996 Storage area enhancements: $362.42 Church microphones: $2,171.99 Total of the current requests: $15,080.41 We have even more to accomplish in the coming year. Hopefully you have now received a letter outlining our roadmap for the coming year which focuses on items the parish has identified as priorities. These include increasing Christian education for all ages, updating common areas, implementing deferred maintenance, expanding our internal care for one another, increasing and focusing our outreach ministries and continuing to provide diversity in liturgical offerings. I invite each and every one of you, no matter the age, to join us on Wednesday evening, October 5 th for a wonderful catered meal and celebration of the many

THE GREETEROctober 2016

FROM THE RECTOR

A time to celebrate and to give thanks!

These include:

We have even more to accomplish in the coming year.

I invite each and every one of you, no matter the age, to join us on Wednesday evening, October 5th for a wonderful catered meal and celebration of the many ministries and programs that happen at St. Andrew’s. I promise good food, fun and some surprises, maybe even a skit!

God is good all the time. All the time, God is good. Let us celebrate together as a community of faith, bound together by our common faith in Jesus Christ. For indeed, each one of us can make a difference by growing together!

MINISTRY NEWS

2017 DR MISSIONS TEAMS ARE FORMING AT ST ANDREW’SDominican ministry has been an important part of Outreach at St. Andrew’s.  Our network of friends and the number of project sites have grown and will continue to do so in 2017.Opportunities exist for youth age 16 through high school graduate and for adults of any age.  All that is needed is a missioner’s heart and a commitment to share God’s Holy Love with our brothers and sisters in the Dominican Republic.

The St. Andrew’s adult mission team will travel to Santiago April 26, 2017. They will then travel to San Francisco de Macoras to work at the church and school there.  We will work with Padre Salvador Almonte. Padre Salvador visited St. Andrew’s in 2011 while he and his family were in Omaha visiting Don and Melissa Peeler.  Padre Salvador has many projects in store for us that do not involve much more than the ability to use a paint brush and enjoy community activities.

The youth mission will return to complete its work at the preschool we have renovated in 2015 and 2016.  Music and other daily programs will be shared with the community of El Pedregal and neighboring communities. Youth must be at least 16 years. At this time, we have nine St. Andrew’s youth who have committed. The success of this mission will come though the many friendships that have been established there.

Please join us 5:30 PM, Sunday evening, October 23, 2016 for a traditional Dominican dinner and Fiesta. The purpose for this evening is threefold.  First, the youth of St. Andrew’s wish to thank our church family for its love and support.  Second, information will be shared regarding adult and youth DR mission teams which are now forming. Third, we are blessed to have Padre Sandino with us on this day.

Our 2016 and 2017 Youth DR Missioners will plan and prepare this dinner.  Each will share witness to their mission experience.  Padre Sandino will also speak to us on his mission experiences.

The Vestry of St. Andrew’s has generously underwritten the cost of this dinner. No tickets will be sold, but a free-will offering is requested to support our2017 youth and adult mission teams. A minimum $10 donation is suggested.  Anauction and other fundraising activities are planned for the evening.

Be an Outreach Angel….join the fun on October 23rd.  The life changed may be your own.  All we ask is that you RSVP to Don or Melissa Peeler at [email protected] by October 20th.

PASTORAL CARE TEAMEcclesiastes 4:12 By yourself you’re unprotected. With a friend you can face the worst. Can you round up a third? A three-stranded rope isn’t easily snapped. (MSG)

This verse reminds us that we all need a friend and, at times, a whole community. St. Andrew’s vision statement begins with the phrase “We are a Christ-centered community.…” With that in mind, no one should ever feel alone, broken, forsaken, hungry, beat up, unloved, or unsupported. The good news is my community, your community, our community is alive and well. St. Andrew’s has a lot of people and programs already in place devoted to not letting anyone or anything go unnoticed. And we need your help in making our community even stronger. First and foremost, we need to know you need help! If you are struggling, have a surgical procedure scheduled, just not feeling well, please call the church office and let us know. Second, would a phone call, card, meal, prayer, visit, car ride, prayer shawl, or check help? One of the greatest gifts we can give to each other is our time and a listening ear. Jesus did this often because He knew it mattered and would change lives. We are each called to be Jesus to each other! Can you imagine a better friend to have? The third part in making our community stronger is participation. What is the Holy Spirit calling you to do? What do you like to do? Do you like to cook? Pray? Knit? Talk? Write notes? Drive? Let us know and become involved. Call the church, talk to Diane, our new associate priest, grab Nancy Ponec or Karen Ekholm, and get your questions answered. Become an active member in my community, your community, our community.

GETTING HEALTHY WITH GODDo you want to exercise more? Pray more? Lose a few pounds (before the holidays instead of after)? Eat more veggies, cut back on processed and “white foods.” Not sure where or how to start? Finding it difficult to cook for one, or two?Well, join the club! Literally!Interest has been expressed to begin a group that can help each of us achieve our health goals by employing spiritual tools and group accountability and support. We don’t know what it will look like, when we will meet, or how we will do this. It is supposed that through prayer and discussion we might arrive at some group norms and goals to help each of us achieve our goals.

"Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God?  You are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore, honor God with your body," 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

We know that spiritual practices can help us with anxiety, worry, fear. It stands to reason that spiritual practices can help us in our daily choices about health and wellness. If you are interested, please come and join the discussion. An organizational meeting will be held Thursday, October 13th, at 6:30 pm (prior to Women in the Bible/Choir Rehearsal). Your ideas, preferred times to meet, needs and desires are welcome. Let’s be a healthier community on this journey.Sponsored by the Caring Community Team

CLOTHING COLLECTION FOR YESWarm Winter clothing will be collected for the Youth Emergency Service during the months of September & October. Items especially needed are coats, sweaters, sweatshirts/pants, hats, scarfs, gloves/mittens, socks & blankets. Items may be deposited in one of the three black bins in Engle Hall. Money donations are also greatly appreciated. Checks may be written payable to St Andrews with a YES notation on the memo line. Thank you for your consideration of helping our homeless youth who are struggling to become self-sufficient. Additional information about Youth Emergency Services can be found at http://www.yesomaha.org/

ST. ANNE’S SUPPORT AND CARE CENTREEach summer for the past several years our parish takes a collection in support of St. Anne’s Support and Care Centre which is the Outreach arm of St. Anne’s (a small Parish in Stilfontein, South Africa), that works among destitute people, orphans, and those suffering from HIV and AIDS.  Arthur Frederiksen is from that parish and comes to visit us each summer. Donations can be made out to St. Andrew's Church with St. Anne's in the memo line.

ST. MONICA’S THANKS YOUThe Ladies of St. Monica's Guild would once again like to thank the members of St. Andrew's for their generous support of our Welcome Bag project.  In June, we were able to make another successful, and very much appreciated, delivery of bags to the St. Monica's Home in Lincoln.  Thanks to our seamstresses, the bags were beautiful as always, and because of your generosity, women will have their basic hygiene needs met while they go through treatment for substance abuse, as well as the hope in knowing that they are not alone in their fight.  We will continue our Welcome Bag ministry with our goal of making another delivery in January.  Donations are accepted year-round in the St. Monica's bin outside the office.  Items requested are new bath-size towels and washcloths, full-size (Suave or similar brand) shampoo, conditioner, body wash, body lotion, toothpaste, toothbrushes, disposable razors, non-aerosol deodorant, feminine hygiene products, journals and pens.

MAGDALENE OMAHAMagdalene Omaha is a program that works to provide a sanctuary for healing and recovery to women survivors of trafficking, abuse, and addiction. Their plan is to provide survivors with the support and space they need to recover from the effects of trafficking. The program offers long-term housing, access to key services, and job training—all for free. Rev. Becca Stevens, the founder of Magdalene Nashville will be speaking at Magdalene Omaha’s kick-off event that is open to the public Saturday, October 15, 6pm at Trinity Cathedral 113 N. 18 Street. You are invited to come hear an amazing speaker and learn more about them at this program and following reception. Donations are encouraged at the event. Diane † would like to have dinner ahead of time with anyone interested in attending and can engage in a carpool from St. Andrew’s. Please let her know if you are interested in dinner or carpooling.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITYHabitat for Humanity is sponsored by St. Andrew’s with our financial resources and has been for many years. We can do more by volunteering to help build a home. All types of help are needed and desired. When we help build a home, we are helping a family move into a home who might otherwise not be able to do so. Please consider helping with a labor of love. The Habitat for Humanity Interfaith Coalition build for 2016 has started. The house is at 3936 North 21st Street. Volunteer shifts are only on Saturdays, either 8:30am – noon or noon – 3:30pm. Please sign up at habitatomaha.org/volunteer. This is a new program. The reservation code is "interfaith". Safety equipment is provided, so do not buy the safety kit. Call Phil Pierce, our parish coordinator, if you need more information at 402-253-5860.

DEAN FRICKE FOOD PANTRYA GREAT BIG THANKS to everyone who has been donating non-perishable food items, monetary donations and of course, those large brown grocery sacks that we so desperately need for the Dean Fricke Food Pantry.   Please consider picking up a few non-perishable food items when doing your grocery shopping this week.  As Jesus said, “we will always have the poor with us” but the good news is we can do something to help them.  Thanks again to all who have faithfully answered the call.  The shopping cart by the office has donation envelopes available in the “child seat” area for those who prefer donating funds.   Thanks again, Tim and Noreen. IF YOU CONTRIBUTE TO THE UNITED WAYPlease help the food pantry supported by Episcopal churches in the Omaha area financially by designating your United Way giving to the “Dean Fricke Memorial Episcopal Food Pantry, Inc., Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 113 No. 18th St., Omaha, NE 68102,” phone 342-7013. We are not on the list, so ask your United Way volunteer for a Donor Designation form. Fill in the space for a non-affiliated agency indicating Episcopal Food Pantry. You do not need an ID #, even though the form may ask for it. To ensure proper credit, please check the box to receive acknowledgment of your contribution. FOR FEDERAL EMPLOYEES:Please help the Dean Fricke Pantry by designating your Combined Federal Campaign giving to the “Dean Fricke Memorial Episcopal Food Pantry, Inc. Trinity Episcopal Cathedral, 113 No. 18th St., Omaha, NE 68102,” phone 342-7013. The Fricke Pantry is part of the Combined Federal Campaign. FROM THE DESK

Our Presiding Bishop, Michael Curry, recently visited the Standing Rock Reservation and spoke to them regarding his views on their protest of the pipeline set to be built through their land. The following is a transcript of this speech.

Presiding Bishop Michael B. CurryA Word to the Church

God came among us in the person of Jesus of Nazareth to show us the Way.  He came to show us the Way to life, the Way to love.  He came to show us the Way beyond what often can be the nightmares of our own devisings and into the dream of God’s intending.  That’s why, when Jesus called his first followers he did it with the simple words “Follow me.”“Follow me,” he said, “and I will make you fish for people.”

Follow me and love will show you how to become more than you ever dreamed you could be.  Follow me and I will help you change the world from the nightmare it often is into the dream that God intends.  Jesus came and started a movement and we are the Episcopal branch of the Jesus movement. Near the end of Matthew’s Gospel story of the Resurrection of Jesus from the dead, Mary Magdalene and some of the women go to the tomb to anoint his body.  When they get there they find that the tomb is empty, the stone has been rolled away and there is no body there.  Then they see and hear an angel who says to them, “This Jesus of Nazareth whom you seek, he is not here, he has been raised as he said he would be and he has now gone ahead of you to Galilee.  There you will see him.  It is in Galilee that the Risen Lord will be found and seen for he has gone ahead of us.”

Galilee.

Which is a way of talking about the world.

Galilee.

In the streets of the city.

Galilee.

In our rural communities.

Galilee in our hospitals.

Galilee in our office places.

Galilee where God’s children live and dwell there.

In Galilee you will meet the living Christ for He has already gone ahead of you.

A few years ago I was in a coffee shop in Raleigh, North Carolina, just a few blocks away from our Diocesan House there.  While in line I started a conversation with a gentleman who turned out to be a Mennonite pastor.  He had been sent to Raleigh to organize a church in the community on the streets without walls.  As we were talking over our coffee, he said something to me that I have not forgotten.  He said the Mennonite community asked him to do this because they believed that in this environment in which we live, the church can no longer wait for its congregation to come to it, the church must go where the congregation is.

Page 9: Magdalene Omaha is a program that - …inside.standrewsomaha.org/wp-content/uploads/2016/09/…  · Web viewHopefully you have now received a letter outlining our roadmap for ...

Now is our time to go.  To go into the world to share the good news of God and Jesus Christ.  To go into the world and help to be agents and instruments of God’s reconciliation.  To go into the world, let the world know that there is a God who loves us, a God who will not let us go, and that that love can set us all free. This is the Jesus Movement, and we are The Episcopal Church, the Episcopal branch of Jesus’ movement in this world. God bless you, and keep the faith.

Articles for the next edition of the Greeter are due Tuesday, October 25. Thanks, Erin Sloan

ANTI-GUN VIOLENCE SUNDAYThe Episcopal Church marked Sunday, September 25th – as Anti-gun violence day. Lest it be just another day on the calendar that slides by unnoticed, I offer this personal reflection. I grew up in Michigan in a family of rifle hunters. My father hunted small game, his father hunted and my great aunt, who was all of 5’1” was maybe the best hunter of them all. I dated a guy who hunted and would, on occasion, walk with him. Guns were in our house. We knew where they were and Dad always kept the ammunition separate from the rifles. (I still don’t know where he kept it.) Every fall we knew the guys would all be gone for a day for the opening of deer season. It was just how it was. Plainwell, my home town, is small. When I was growing up population was about 3500. We didn’t experience much tragedy or violence. An old barn fire was about as exciting as it got. Over the course of my lifetime I have had four friends and family members who have been murdered and/or who have committed suicide. Four. That seems like a lot to me, for someone who comes from a small town where people didn’t lock their doors and almost everyone I knew lived in a home with a hunter and guns. These weren’t accidents – I experienced one of those in junior high when a classmate was killed in a hunting accident. All four people were murdered or victims of murder/suicide or suicide. It used to be that we all knew someone affected by cancer. That still holds true. I also contend that most of us have been touched by gun violence … someone we know or someone close to us has been a victim of gun violence. Just as the Zika virus is an epidemic I contend that gun violence is at epidemic proportions. I am not against gun ownership. That said, I do believe that each of us, as a creation of God, has a right to feel and to be safe in our own homes, schools, churches and places of work. I don’t like having to lock the office for safety when I leave and Ginny is still working. I don’t like waking up in the morning to find that another unarmed (usually) young man (usually black) has been shot by a (usually white) police officer overnight. I don’t like wondering if someone I know, someone I love, will be hurt or killed by a random act of violence.

What I pray for is a revitalization of “random acts of kindness” where each of us does something nice for another person, preferably someone we don’t know, once a day. Remember the movie, “Pay it Forward” released in 2000 starring Kevin Spacey, Helen Hunt and Haley Joel Osment? If not, I suggest renting it … it’s a great story about how lives are changed through small, intentional acts of kindness.

I don’t know what the answer is for our country’s sad statistic on gun violence. I’m sure God weeps with us. Perhaps we can make a small difference in our own communities and in our own lives by being kinder and gentler with each other. It might be a start. Diane+
