Named after one of the partners mother, the Marquise de Grisogono, the jewellery house began experimenting with more daring designs, breaking away from the norm at the time in the world of jewellery design. Two years later Fawaz Gruosi took over sole control of de Grisogono and became even more consumed with creating statement- making jewellery, straying from what other houses were designing. Fascinated by the Black Orlov, a black diamond, he began researching black diamonds, searched for them and in 1996 launched a collection devoted to the enigmatic diamond. Since then Gruosi has continued his pursuit for beautiful and, more importantly, striking collections. Focusing on differentiating his house from the other established, well- known names in fine jewellery, he created larger, imposing pieces, I think jewellery pieces are like clothes, if you do not show it whats the point, explains the elegantly outspoken Gruosi. My pieces are for women with a lot of character. I think you should wear what you like, you need to feel at ease and I think you need to have fun with jewellery. Gruosis choice to experiment with colour and design has changed the world of jewellery with magnificent pieces taking centre stage for an elite clientele who constantly looks for outstanding and unique pieces. And the anniversary collection continues the tradition of dramatic and glamorous designs with emeralds and diamonds. The collection features a multi- layered, multi-strand necklace centred on a graduated row of cabochon Colombian emeralds, each enveloped in a deep border of pave-set white diamonds, which was worn by Sharon Stone at last years Cannes Film Festival. Naturally no de Grisogono collection is complete without the most elite of diamonds, the black diamond, and for this milestone line discover the breathtaking cosmic ring with a single 6.39-carat white diamond encircled by pav black diamonds and white diamonds, creating an architectural sphere of diamonds. The de Grisogono boutique on the chic rue Saint-Honor, which opened its doors back in 2003, is a dazzling rendezvous when visiting the French capital. Here you can discover the unique and the avant-garde designs that are unique to this young fine jewellery maison. de Grisogono 358bis rue Saint-Honor (1st), 01 44 55 04 40 FFF awaz Gruosi founded his F awaz Gruosi founded hisawaz Gruosi founded his F awaz Gruosi founded his F jewellery house de Grisogono F jewellery house de Grisogono back in 1993 with two partnersF back in 1993 with two partnersF back in 1993 with two partnersF back in 1993 with two partnersF back in 1993 with two partnersF back in 1993 with two partners My pieces are for women with a lot of character. With lashings of purple and gold, crystal chandeliers and intimate alcoves, the Purple Bar is a perfect rendezvous spot for a drink in the middle of the afternoon or for a sexy nightcap. The cocktail menu offers old classics including a Dry Martini and Pink Lady and cool creations including Purple Rain, a mix of Mount Gay Eclipse rum, fresh mint and crme de mre. For a more laidback vibe you must head to Token 130. This cosy and fun bar found in the hipster-favoured second arrondissement is ideal for a relaxed night out. The cocktail menu features original cocktails mixed with different price-ranged alcohols to suit both your taste and budget. Laurent, the owner, will also happily mix your favourite off-the-menu cocktail as he chats to the regulars at the bar. The vibe here is relaxed and friendly. Stylish and dark, the Blind Bar offsets Maison Champs Elysess La Table du Huits all-white dcor with its almost all-black look. The bar features a warming fireplace and playfully uses shadows to create a contrast between the black bar and the adjoining restaurant. On the shelves, bottles peek behind black silhouettes, and on the menu, you will find cocktails created to tease your senses as you relax in a very fashion- crowd setting. If you enjoy a sweet cocktail we recommend you try the Jam at Home, a vodka- based drink impressively made with the houses very own raspberry jam. [ J A N U A R Y i n P ar i s ] 14WHERE Paris I JANUARY 2014 theballroomphotokristenpelou For a few, carefully mixed cocktails, you must head underground. The Ballroom, the speakeasy hidden behind an unmarked black door next to The Beef Club restaurant, with a burly yet charming gentleman manning the door, descend the winding flight of stairs and be welcomed into the sophisticated cocktail bar that awaits. Inside, find all the beautiful people of the city in the cosy seated areas that make up the three separate rooms of the bar, although the best table is right at the bar counter where you can watch as the barmen mix and twirl, making you the perfect cocktails. Another speakeasy bar worth checking out while on your bar-crawl is Candelaria. Behind the hole- in-the-wall restaurant serving authentic tacos in the fashionable 3rd arrondissement, behind a simple white door, is where you will find one of the citys coolest bars. The cocktail menu features the Pisco Disco with Barsol pisco, lime and Galliano, and a serving of punch to share between four to six people. The bar gets busy quite quickly so we recommend you either go early for a drink before dinner or later for a fun nightcap. The event, being hed for the fifth time in the French capital, is metamorphosing into a leading rendezvous of international designers and decoration editors. For this prestigious event, 75 international houses of decoration reveal their collections in some 50 Parisian showrooms on both banks of the Seine. Held from January 23rd to January 27th, the event offers a unique opportunity to explore the aesthetic universe of decoration in one of its cradles, Paris. Creators of fabrics, upholsteries, light fixtures, carpets, trimmings and more enable you to enter into the world of their collections, presented by their creators, while offering a glimpse into their know-how and craft. The avant-garde event with its trendy gifts and magical lights on the Right and Left Banks of the Seine provides a convivial way of discovering decoration and style in Paris as the Parisian showrooms open their doors to visitors to discover new collections. This years theme is Showcase Your Experience: the Art, Manner, Materials and Handiwork. Leading names in decoration are all taking part in the event like Christian Fischbacher, Le Manach, Nobilis, Pierre Frey, but one can also discover some exclusive houses like Brunschwig & Fils originally established in 1900 as a tapestry weaving mill in Aubusson. A host of houses can also be discovered during the event like Black Edition, which is a new brand, launched by the house of Romo in 2013, exclusively designing fabrics and wall coverings by blending sophisticated textures, innovative weaving techniques and craft effects. Boussac is presenting its California Collection, graphic and minimalist, it is inspired by the optical illusion of Op Art from the 60s and 70s with a highlight of the collection being a design by Hilton McConnico, a bold print combining cactus and kiwi. Meanwhile, Designers Guild is presenting Christian Lacroix Maison, which it launched in 2011, with a superb range of fabric and wallpaper collections as well as home accessories designed by the iconic fashion brand. French savoir-faire is showcased as well. When museums and historical chteaux require intricate trimmings, they inevitably turn to Declercq Passementiers, which supplies the likes of the Chateau of Versailles. The house, whose story began back in 1852, is currently run by the sixth generation of the family, incarnated by Jrme and Elisa Declercq. Ancestral methods are used in the intricate processes of weaving, embroidering and twisting threads to create braids, fringes, tassels and a host of fine finishing touches. This year brings the Ocean collection, with trims that can be used either inside or outside on terraces, pergolas, pool houses and more. Both banks of the Seine are getting into the act and free shuttles will transport visitors from the Left Bank to the Right Bank and vice versa. The show, entitled Accelerated Buddha, juxtaposes Sugimotos artworks with antique masterpieces from his personal collection and puts the spotlight on the diverse aspects of his artistic preoccupations and more precisely the birth and decline of Buddhism in Japan. The culminating point of the exhibition is the Accelerated Buddha, composed of photographs and a video installation. The photographs and video are of the thousand Bodhisattvas of the Sanjusangendo, a 13th century temple in Kyoto. A process of acceleration allows the visitor to see the thousand Buddhas become a million. Hiroshi Sugimoto, a major figure in contemporary photography, pioneered the use of very long exposure times. Produced in collaboration with the artists son, Alexis Poliakoff, the show looks at the works of this master of Abstract art from 1948 to 1969 and features an exceptional selection of 40 gouaches by the great 20th century artist, a leading figure of the Paris School of the 1950s. It is being exhibited on the second floor of the museum in parallel to the major exhibit devoted to the Etruscan civilisation. P.V. Through Feb 9 59-61 rue de Grenelle (7th), 01 42 22 59 58 The world of dreams emerges in an astonishing assembly of Renaissance works on show in an exhibition entitled The Renaissance and Dreams at the Muse du Luxembourg. The Renaissance, in and of itself the dream of a new life, of re-birth, looked to dreams, to their interpretation, meaning and representation. There was a revival in divinatory practices, dreams entered into the literature of both the poetry and prose of the time through the works of, among others, Rabelais and Ariosto. Questions were asked, did sleep and dreaming put us into contact with the power of the other world, do dreams enable us to go out of our bodies and enter into contact with the divine? The Renaissance painters and engravers explored these themes and the show brings together works by Bosch, Drer, Veronese and others, depicting the world of dreams and dreamers. The exhibition takes the visitor down a path of night and sleep, from dawn to the final awakening with the main part of the show devoted to dreams and visions. P.V. The eminent French artist has radically transformed the spaces and places of the Palais de Tokyo dialoguing with its architecture, creating a vibrant ensemble that seemingly comes alive. Objects, music, light and films surround the spectator, transforming the building into something akin to an organism in perpetual evolution while Parreno becomes the first artist to occupy the totality of the enlarged space of the Palais de Tokyo.
