F r o m o u r P R E S I D E N T

Dear Members:

This subject matter for this issue of “The Magazine” is Fitness. We all realize how important

it is to eat properly, get the correct amount of rest and to exercise. I must admit that I am

somewhat deficient in the exercise amount and food quantities – oh well!

We are approaching our busiest times of our season and the calendar is filled with many

activities and events. We hope that you take advantage of everything that our wonderful

club has to offer you.

I must say that the food has been superb; the special events have been fun and entertaining

and over all, Hunters Run provides a happy, well rounded experience for all who take

advantage of the myriad of functions that we support and sponsor.

Our committees are dedicated to our membership. The committee members present

wonderfully creative ideas pertaining to all activities at the club from food and beverage to

financial analysis. Management enjoys interacting with the committees and responding to

the very positive input that they provide.

In addition to our wonderful committees, there is a vast array of clubs to which our

members belong. The topics range from languages such as French, Hebrew and Yiddish to

games, drama, culture, current events, nutrition, singles social, books, dancing, and I could

go on and on. There are over 40 organized clubs at Hunters Run. There is more than one

way to achieve fitness and your participation in entertaining and informative clubs and

activities contributes greatly to your well-being.

I hope that you enjoy the holidays and I wish you good health and happiness in 2018.

Happy New Year!

Bernie Silver

Long Range PlanningBy Irwin Regent, Chair

This year the Long Range Planning Committee has continued its long-standing policy of putting Hunters Run at the forefront of South Florida clubs by providing our membership the best possible environment for their life at Hunters Run. These programs involve all aspects of a lifestyle designed to address the many varying interests of our members. During the last eight years and the coming year, we have upgraded virtually every segment of our physical plant.

Every one of our dining venues has been renovated and two new venues added, to afford more variety in our dining choices. The Ladies’ Card Rooms have been expanded by fifty percent. In the coming year we will realize an exciting new Pool and Atrium complex supported by expanded al fresco dining, a sunset cocktail area, expanded Tiki Bar, a completely renovated Il Cacciatore and a beach entry pool with designated lap lanes.

Our sports, health, and wellness programs continue to grow with the addition of a Physical Therapy suite, an expanded state-of-the-art Fitness Center, the renovation of the North golf course, and the addition of four pickleball courts. Future planning will include an upgrade to the tennis complex.

Demographics of our membership continue to evolve, so our future planning must take into account the changing interests of our younger members. Among the many projects under consideration are a dog park, basketball and bocce courts, additional club rooms, and expanded wellness activity spaces.

A Strategic Approach to Health and Wellness at Hunters RunBy Lew Gedansky, Chair

Societal trends and actions among all ages indicate an increased focus on mental and physical health and wellness. Trends are showing an increase in the variety of sports, fitness facilities, exercise methodologies, meal selections, disease prevention and mitigation, relaxation techniques, and supporting technologies. While being healthy is truly not a new trend (because no one chooses to be unhealthy,) what has changed is the shift of total reliance on medical professionals to an increased amount of personal responsibility and action.

The Hunters Run Board of Directors recognized the importance and critical stature of these and other trends by approving a Strategic Plan in December 2015. This Strategic Plan includes seven broad-based strategies with one of them being to Build a Comprehensive and

Integrated Hunters Run Sports, Fitness, Dining, Health and Wellness Strategy Supported by Relevant Programs and Facilities. All the broad-based strategies are in support of the Board -approved Hunters Run Vision which is: To Provide the Best Balance of Amenities and Value Among SE Florida Residential Communities.

Hunters Run offers many sports, fitness, dining, health and wellness amenities. However, we must not remain stagnant. We must constantly reassess our programs and take the opportunity to make them more comprehensive and progressive. An integrated approach to the present programs will enhance our members’ experience.

Critical steps to the development and implementation of the integrated sports, fitness, dining, health and wellness strategy involves listening to the wants and needs of our members, reviewing the latest societal trends in country clubs, assessing the relevance of these trends and the establishment of a “formalized” plan of action.

Hunters Run offers many sports, fitness, dining, health and wellness amenities.

FEATUREHEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Healthful living, improved fitness and staying well are your priorities. You need to take care of your body. You want to know that the club is doing everything it can to support a healthy lifestyle. We get it! Hunters Run has a myriad of offerings and programs to help you travel along the fitness and wellbeing trail. Take advantage of them. This issue highlights many of the choices available to you throughout the club, as well as members who exemplify a commitment to being healthy. The start of a New Year seems particularly appropriate for all of us to assess what we are doing, gain inspiration from those who have set an example, and find what works best for us.

BE ACTIVEPlay a sport —tennis, golf, pickleball, stickball, or water volley ball. Be a regular at the Fitness Center. Take strengthening, balancing, yoga, tai chi or water aerobics classes, among others. Tighten up the slack, toughen your body and boost your spirit. A good run or walk is good therapy.

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT You can eat healthfully and well at Hunters Run. Select from varied and interesting menus. Healthy choices, reduced calories and gluten free meals are always offered.

ENRICH YOUR LIFEWhy not play bridge, canasta, or mahjongg, or even all three? You’ll reap lessons of life as you learn about yourself and others. It’s a great way to make friends and have fun. You could join a Special Interest Club and involve yourself in a new interest, or passion. Discover your voice in the drama club, French conversation or Yiddish. Stimulate your mind in the Current Events Club. Wine tasting is so popular and delicious. Sketching and drawing will loosen your creativity. And the list goes on.

PEACE OF MIND: “ME” TIME Don’t forget to re-charge your batteries! Take time for yourself every day. Give yourself permission. Go to lunch and forget the chores. And if you want to be alone, take time for solitude, to think deeply, to control your emotions, to improve your relations with others. You’ll improve your concentration and increase your productivity.Hunters Run is committed to give you access to a healthy and fit life, to help you take care of you.

Hunters Run Country Club JANUARY/FEBRUARY 2018 7

Years ago when my husband and I lived in New York, we attended several lectures given by the famous author, Dr. John Sarno of The Rusk Institute. He believed that through a healthy mind-body lifestyle, a person could live a high quality life, pain free, without the use of medication to manage both physical as well as mental problems. He would applaud all the opportunities we have here in Hunters Run that allow our members to take part in the many activities readily available to promote a healthier way of life. Several residents have agreed to comment about how living in Hunters Run has allowed them to attain both mental and physical well being, and are planning to have these activities as permanent parts of their life through the New Year of 2018. Wendy Moldovan has lived in Hunters Run for several years and is very involved in healthy lifestyles and mind-body improvement. Wendy actively uses the Westgate Pool on a regular basis for her swimming workouts. This past year, she also has introduced extra Yoga classes to Hunters Run members, feeling very strongly about Yoga’s beneficial aspects to our health and well-being. She says, “The key is staying centered…knowing who I am and what my essential values are. The ways I do this are by having true friends and by taking time alone with myself to reflect, do yoga, and to meditate. That’s it in a nutshell!”Dr. Harold Friedman, a member of our Board, commented on the Hunters Run environment in a very detailed way. “I have lived in Hunters Run for 17 years. It is a fabulous place to live, offering a huge variety of healthy options for mind and body improvement. Beautiful golf courses, tennis courts, pickleball courts, and a lovely environment to take the perfect walk. The beauty is that what you decide to do or not to do is all yours.”

LEADING A HEALTHY MIND-BODY LIFESTYLE AT HUNTERS RUN

Ira Nagle and his wife, Brenda, are fairly new members of Hunters Run. “We arrived from Boston and our initial concerns about renting in a new place were set aside almost immediately when our neighbors came out to greet us. Their warmth made us feel so welcome. We felt like we really belonged here and loved the relaxing and beautiful atmosphere of the Club. Brenda and I exercise daily and enjoy the healthy meals at our beautiful restaurants. We hope to enjoy the healthy lifestyle Hunters Run offers to us for many years to come!”Christina Fasciana moved to Hunters Run three years ago. “Since I have moved here, I have worked out with a trainer in the gym – she is tough but great! I walked two Susan G. Komen 3-Day walks since I moved here. The 3-Day walks are part of my lifestyle and I’ll be training here to walk 60 miles in Colorado and Mt. Hood. I have committed to play golf regularly with the WTD -12. Ultimately my fitness goals for 2018 are to practice a lot and hit my golf balls long, straight and in the air, and to run my second half marathon in August in Portland Oregon.” As you can see, in so many different ways, the healthy lifestyle that Hunters Run offers works differently for our members’ individual needs. As for myself, when I am standing on the green of South 14, looking out over the water, the bird life, cloud formations, flowers and sunlight, with Marcia Gold, my friend of 70-plus years, and also a Hunters Run resident, we always stop and look around. We feel so appreciative and relaxed and our minds are eased by all of the beauty surrounding us. “Not bad for two kids from the Bronx,” we say. “Who would ever have dreamed this life at Hunters Run?”

HEALTHY OPTIONS ON THE MENU

By Steve Perlmutter, Food & Beverage Committee Chair

Hunters Run is a vibrant and health-minded community. Surrounded by pastoral golf courses, top rated tennis facilities and a world class Fitness Center, Hunters Run also offers an array of healthy dining experiences.

Thoughtful consideration is given to the planning and development of menus to support these lifestyles. Over the last few years more emphasis has been placed on healthier options in our dining venues. While some of these dining options have become staples on the menu, others appear periodically throughout the year as specials.

Some of the healthy options include the use of couscous and quinoa. These grains have been included because they are a good source of protein, are rich in dietary fiber and vitamins and minerals. Additionally, quinoa is gluten free and supports healthy digestion.

A brief look at our menus shows the creative talent of our culinary team in many areas. Some of the dishes that have been developed include options such as:

PASTA• Whole wheat or gluten free

BURGERS FOR THE HEALTHY MINDED• Turkey burger with alfalfa sprouts,

cucumber slices and low fat Greek yogurt aioli

• Garden burger

• Salmon burger

In a community where healthy living is a way of life, Hunters Run is the place to be for hale and hearty culinary delights.

NANCY BERNHEIM is committed to eating healthy food and

so are the other members of the Hunters Run Nutrition Club.

They care about what they eat. They are learning about healthy

choices and nutritious food. At Hunters Run, all residents can eat

healthfully, including low sodium, sugar free, gluten free and low

calorie meals. Nancy shared with us how the Nutrition Club got

started.

“I started the club because my significant other was rushed to

the hospital twice in the past two years thinking he was having

a heart attack, but instead, he was suffering from the effects of

something he ate. I wanted to learn and hopefully teach him

how to eat healthier.

“The nutrition consulting/dietician section of Bethesda Hospital

offered to provide the club with speakers for our meetings. We

were coached on a ‘healthy plate,’ which would have abundant

vegetables, 1/4 of the plate devoted to healthy carbs (grains,

couscous, beans, wild/ brown rice, multi-grains, bran, cereals,

FOOD FOR THOUGHT: HUNTERS RUN’S NUTRITION CLUB

sweet po-tatoes),1/4 of the plate protein, and add fruit and

some dairy. Most important for all of us living at Hunters Run,

we learned how to choose the healthiest items from our various

menus by going over the menus, item by item.

“We also learned about daily supplements and why we should take them:• Multi-vitamins are helpful in correcting

vitamin deficiencies; • There is a link between Vitamin D and

mental health;• Magnesium is helpful with muscle

contractions and blood sugar control;• Fish oil helps in the control of

cholesterol;• Oatmeal reduces LDL cholesterol levels.

The December 2017 meeting’s focus was ‘Understanding

package labels and their nutrient breakdown.’ One of our future

goals is to see more vegetables and fish choices on our Hunters

Run menus. We’d also like to share good tasting, nutritious,

healthy recipes.” If you wish to join the Nutrition Club, please

send an email to [email protected]

THREE GENERATIONS – THREE FITNESS MIRACLESBy Susan Braitman

Three generations of the Miller family at Hunters Run have various physical conditions and limitations. Each has achieved miraculous results from training at our Fitness Center that have greatly improved the quality of their lives.

Ruth Miller, aged 98, has lived at Hunters Run for 33 years. She was always active. She used to win what she called her golf trifecta – a championship at Hunters Run, at Rockrimmon Country Club in Stamford, CT., and at Banyan Golf Club in West Palm Beach. At age 55, she picked up a tennis racket for the first time in her life. By the next year, she was playing doubles with her partner, Phyllis Adelman, and winning championships. At age 75, she blew out both of her knees. Her life became sedentary, and she was unsteady on her feet.

Her grandson, Matthew Miller, who moved in two years ago, immediately changed her routine and eating habits. He first started her on a diet that included fruit, vegetables, salad, and salmon. He cut out all the junk food, ice cream, canned soup, etc., that she had been eating. To date, her cholesterol has dropped more than 50 points without medication. With her new diet, she was also able to stop one of her blood pressure medications. He also takes her to the driving range and putting green in season for her to get practice. She still can putt like a champ and drive 150 yards!

To improve her musculature, endurance, coordination, memory, and balance, he encouraged her to take one hour-long private session two times per week in the Fitness Center. She has gone from hardly being able to stand without falling over to walking and balancing like someone half her age. She can handle a 100 lb. weight on the leg press machine. Since she has been going to the gym, she has not fallen down once. She does all the machines, free weights, yoga, zumba, balancing on the bosu, elliptical machine, bicycle, even swinging the ropes. Members who see her in the gym stop and stare and she gets

comments all the time that she is an inspiration to all. It just goes to show that you are never too old to implement radical life changes and that they will make a difference in your health and happiness.

Jack Miller, Ruth’s son, arrives for four months during season. The rest of the year he is in Prague on business. In 2008, he was diagnosed with a low thyroid condition. He was suffering from cold intolerance, swollen tongue, fatigue, weight gain, and couldn’t taste food.

Medication, combined with diet and exercise, helped him regain his stamina and strength. He also plays golf frequently. When he is in residence at Hunters Run, he can be found at the Fitness Center. He says, “… my feeling is that the gym at Hunters Run is at the top of the gyms I have visited over the years. I have taken lessons with John [Freeland], and he was able to construct a program of alternating cardio with weight training which I follow even when I am not here.” When in Prague, he utilizes the training he learned at Hunters Run.

Matthew Miller, age 34, Ruth’s grandson and Jack’s son, suffers from a rare genetic disorder, Ehlers–Danlos (Hypermobile Type), affecting his ligaments and connective tissue. It causes him extreme pain and limits his range of motion. There is no known cure.

When he came to live at Hunters Run, he walked unsteadily and had to use a cane. Exercise has helped alleviate some of his pain and instability. Although there are some exercises he cannot do, such as bending and twisting, he began an exercise regimen in the Fitness Center. He starts with a warmup on the elliptical machine, then moves on to upper body or lower body exercises along with private training. Today he generally walks without his cane and lives every day to the fullest.

Come January, you can find all three in the gym working out.

Steve Nisenson has a strong positive attitude. It’s evident when he says, “ My glass is always half full. I try to be positive and be around positive people. I don’t watch the news at bedtime, so I wake up with positive thoughts, not negative ones.” Steve held the highest scoring record for basketball at Hofstra University. His record stood for 43 years, with a whopping 2,222 points. That’s an average of 27.2 points per game and there were no three-point shots in those times. And it was for only the three years when he played on

the basketball team in the 1960’s.Among many of his basketball accomplishments, Steve was inducted into the Jewish Sports Hall of Fame and was drafted by the New York Knicks, although he never played for them. He attributes his outstanding sports career to never being satisfied with his last performance. He always tried to improve, to do bet-ter. Steve played sports almost every day of his life, from age 13 to 23. Neither snow, nor rain, nor heat, nor gloom of night, stayed this player from the courts.“I always watched myself, didn’t drink or smoke and was even a vegetarian for a time,” Steve adds. “Later, I was a competitive tennis player, and today at Hunters Run, I really have a great time playing golf a few times a week. And for one hour, every single day, I work out in the pool, exercising, swimming and keeping myself fit.” Steve still directs a children’s summer camp in Preston Park, Pennsylvania. When he comes home to Florida and Hunters Run, he says, “ I feel so good about being here. Being at Hunters Run is such an advantage.” The power of positive thinking is a given for Steve Nisenson.

Whitey Ford and Sandy Koufax were his heroes. He played baseball in Little League as a boy and in high school, as well. So, with joy, Phil Karas made the Jacksonville University varsity baseball team. A lefty pitcher, Phil kept his pitching skills toned up using an exergenie as well as other special exercise pitching

“Plainview, Long Island in the 60’s was a hotbed of lacrosse enthusiasts. And I was one of them. Basketball, football and lacrosse...I played them all, but I favored lacrosse and played on my high school team. It was all about teamwork and it was hard work. We were a winning team and I was very happy when I got a partial scholarship to play lacrosse at Rutgers. I was underweight, so I had that additional challenge to rise to the level of tough competition with Army, Syracuse, and Princeton, to name a few of the teams. I had to improve my skill level. It took tremendous commitment. I remember training in very cold weather conditions, in the snow, in the spring when other students were on vacation. I learned good hand-eye coordination, an important and essential tool every lacrosse player needed to develop in order to use that small stick and skillfully hit that small ball.”To Mike, the principles and strategies of lacrosse were akin to basketball. His love of the sport continued after college. He refereed high school lacrosse meets and played on a summer lacrosse team. Of course he also coached his son’s PAL lacrosse team. Today, at Hunters Run, Mike continues to work at fitness, playing golf, riding his bike and regularly working out at the Fitness Center, with and without his trainer. “Hunters Run has excellent fitness trainers,” he enthuses. Mike’s sage advice, “Have your kids and grandkids play lacrosse. It’s the best ticket to college.”

machines. Running for endurance rather than speed every other day and other cardio exercises were important elements of his fitness training in the 1960’s. Phil had the opportunity to turn pro, but at that time he had other priorities.Keeping fit after college, he joined a gym, did weight training, jogging and brisk walking. He had to train himself to eat lightly, and that was not an easy task. Phil still loves baseball and today at Hunters Run, he still pitches. He’s the pitcher for our Hunters Run stickball league team at Caloosa Park. He also started our bowling league. Phil plays a lot of golf, and briskly walks four miles a day, four times a week.Phil feels it is vital to our health and well being to do some sort of exercise...“It doesn’t have to be strenuous. Breathe the air. Get the arms, legs and stomach moving. And hard as it may be at Hunters Run, eat lightly.” Phil Karas would agree with his hero, Sandy Koufax: “I’ve got a lot of years to live after baseball and I would like to live them with the complete use of my body.”

28,000 steps.

As she danced the night away at our Opening Dinner Dance in November, Sheri Hecht happened to look at the Fitbit on her wrist, which showed that total number of steps she had accumulated that day! And, she wasn’t done dancing yet.

Her day begins at 7 AM on the treadmill in the Fitness Center. Then, at 8 AM, it is on to an aerobics class there. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, she plays tennis at 9:30 AM. But on Wednesdays, she manages to play pickleball at 8:30 AM before tennis. Steps…steps….steps --- adding up throughout the day.

On Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday, she plays nine holes of golf; Sunday is either pickleball or golf with her husband, Alan.

Almost every day at 11 AM, Sheri heads for the Main Pool. She first began swimming about seven years ago at their summer community pool in Wanaque, New Jersey. “I used to swim 100 laps but now just about 45 minutes. Aside from the exercise, it is very peaceful---but it can get boring, so I have my own mantra. I have certain phrases about my loved ones which I just keep repeating over and over again, as I swim around the pool.”

How does Sheri explain her hour-by-hour, daily routine? “I have a battery that doesn’t stop! Even when I worked as a director of volunteer services, I walked morning, noon and night.” A vegetarian for over 30 years, Sheri has a light breakfast, cottage cheese, sour cream and yogurt for lunch, and a salad for dinner every night. In between, she might indulge in some popcorn---no butter. What is the added motivation to keep exercising? “I am rather addicted to ice cream, so don’t put it in front of me because I may eat it all, even if it has no sugar or is fat free,” she adds.

Sheri and Alan came to Hunters Run 18 years ago. “We drove in and just loved the beauty of Hunters Run. We enjoy all the resources here. We try not to miss anything---we go to the Fitness Center, golf, tennis, pickleball, karaoke nights, Halloween Night, club dinner dances, golf and tennis mixers---we enjoy it all.”

To round out her days, Sheri plays bridge twice a week as well as canasta.

She belongs to two book clubs, which gives her added incentive to get on the treadmill or the elliptical bicycle, so she can read a book on her iPad. “I read a lot,” she says.

“I think the treadmill gives me the most steps,” Sheri points out. “But it is interesting that I get more steps from pickleball than from

tennis. And when I play golf, the bag boys know to put me as a passenger so I can walk the course when I can.”

Sheri started wearing her Fitbit on May, 15, 2015. The company encourages all its users to aim for a 10,000 step goal each day-----roughly the equivalent of five miles. Since she began, Sheri has averaged 23,000 steps each day, twice reaching 35,000. Fitbit’s records show that as of November 22, 2017, Sheri Hecht has walked a total of 21,542,629 steps.

Enjoy your ice cream, Sheri.

Heidi Rubin - GYM RAT

Since Heidi and her husband Mitch (and their dog Oliver) moved to Hunters Run five years ago, she has also found the time to get involved in various activities and committees. She is currently on the House Committee and is co-chair of the Ladies’ Member-Guest Golf Tournament. Previously, she served on the Membership and Food & Beverage Committees.

Heidi and Mitch also take part in various social events here, in particular, the Halloween Dinner Dance, where last year they took first place as Yoda and Princess Leah.

Heidi sums up it all up: “I do life,” she says.

By Stan Walker

Heidi Rubin calls herself a “gym rat”--- no wonder, since she usually is at the Fitness Center seven days a week.

Her routines vary, combining cardio exercise mainly on the elliptical bicycle and treadmill, with weight training and muscle strengthening --- and once a week with a trainer there who pushes her to new levels.

“I love it,” she says. “It is part of my life…it keeps me young.”

Heidi knows what works best for her. A special education teacher and school psychologist early in her career, she jogged a few miles a day and then began walking. “I really began working out after my oldest daughter was born 31 years ago,” she remembers. Heidi joined a gym near her home in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and later moved on to a new JCC in the area. “A trainer there worked with me lifting weights.” She soon realized that she liked to exercise and the trainer taught her about the different equipment. It wasn’t long before she had an elliptical and weights in her house.

Heidi was director of a residential brain injury program in New Jersey. “I also ran a community-based cognitive rehab program for persons who acquired brain injury. I used exercise as a stress release. I loved my job,” she adds.

Heidi’s desire to stay active and have a healthy lifestyle has carried over to her activities here. “If you want to be active, there is so much to do outdoors. Hunters Run is very conducive to enabling you to do whatever you want.” Besides her daily workout in the Fitness Center, Heidi plays golf four days a week, goes for long walks with several friends---from Essex to The Isles, for example, and---no surprise, lifts weights in her house.

One of the top excuses people have for not working out is “I don’t have time.” Really?CNN recently did a report on how Americans spend their time in a 24-hour period. It revealed that Americans spend ten hours and 39 minutes each day staring at a screen. “No way” you say? Well, how much time are we using our tablets, smartphones, personal computers, video / Internet games and TVs? I’ll tell you. CNN states that 81% of Americans have smartphones, which are used one hour and 39 minutes texting, talking, perusing the Internet and taking photos. About 94% of Americans have at least one HD television to watch shows, movies and sporting events four and a half hours a day, not including the “ancient ways” of watching TV through DVDs and DVRs. Netflix, Amazon Prime and Hulu haven’t helped with their accessibility to video on demand and streaming. Most of the remaining time is devoted to the computers: playing games, social media including Facebook, and news on the Internet.Add in seven hours of sleep per night and three hours for personal care, such as eating, bathing, dressing and preparing food. That is A LOT of time being inactive! What is left is over three hours per day. All I am asking for is 30 minutes per day, three days per week! There is time for you to get up and please get to the gym. Your Fitness starts there! (By the way, all our cardio equipment has TVs. Our treadmills have access to the Internet.)

The Golf Department recently launched a new program designed to evaluate and enhance your physical fitness for golf. Our TPI (Titleist Performance Institute) certified instructor, Ray Nalbandian, will work with you to implement a proper training program and work to keep you playing your best game. This is a great program for those who want to improve their game as well as for those recovering from injuries.Ray will first assess your flexibility based on 16 simple exercises – such as arm raises – that will rate you from 0-35. He then plots out an exercise regimen that suits your time, physical limitations, and flexibility. You may want a simple warm-up exercise routine for 10 minutes, 20 minutes, or more before golf. You may prefer to work on your own in the gym. No

When most people think of Physical Therapy, they think of being injured or rehab following a recent surgery. While it is extremely important to seek a skilled PT at a time when you are injured, you may also want to seek your PT when you are perfectly healthy! (or *think* you are.)

OK, OK, hear me out! PRE-HAB… Prehab is a proactive approach to avoiding pain and injury. You will build strength and stability around your most vulnerable areas, while improving mobility, balance and joint function to decrease the potential for injuries.

HOW DOES IT WORK? Prehab exercises strengthen your most vulnerable areas that get stressed in everyday movement: your hips, core and shoulders. By strengthening these areas you will improve posture and alignment, allowing your joints to move more efficiently. You’ll also build up your most injury-prone areas before you’re struck with chronic aches and pain that may, in the worst cases, require surgery.

WHEN SHOULD I DO THIS? Ideally, prehab should be performed 2-6 times a week. You can do it at home when you wake up or at any point during your workout, but it’s best performed near the start of a training session. Many of these movements can be done with no equipment, so there’s no excuse not to take five minutes of your day to do it. You owe it to yourself to find the time — it’s one of the best investments you can make in your long term health.

NOT SURE WHERE TO START? Lucky you! You have your very own On-Site Physical Therapy clinic within your Fitness Center right here at Hunters Run. Your skilled PT, Dr. Michael Frasso and PTA, Nicolette can help you get started with a prehab program designed specifically for your needs.

You will first need to have a chat with your doctor to let him or her know that you want to start injury prevention exercises; chances are you will make your doctor very happy!

Bring a prescription for PT from your doctor and we will get you started today!

If you have any questions, contact Dr. Michael Frasso at (610) 763-8895

PHYSICAL THERAPY: NOT JUST FOR INJURIES

Are you in shape? Do you hate going to the gym? Are you bewildered by the number of classes and machines? Visit John Freeland, our Fitness Director, any weekday between 11:00 AM and noon. After he assesses your fitness with a simple five minute workout, he will recommend a fitness regimen for you. Be sure to tell him your goals and time availability.

Interested in losing weight? John may recommend a muscle building regimen. Muscle weighs more than fat. If you lose ten pounds of fat and gain ten pounds of muscle, your metabolism will be running at a higher rate and you will look trimmer. A staff member can show you how to use the weight machines as well as the appropriate weight level and number of reps. You can also try any of total body conditioning classes including Body Sculpt and Abs.

Interested in flexibility and stability? Try Tai Chi on Tuesday or Thursday at 10:00 AM. Or, yoga, given on Wednesday and Friday 10:00 AM. Also available is Mat Pilates and Core Conditioning on Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday at 9:00 AM. For light exercise, there is Sit and Be Fit (Ladies’ Card Room) 8:00 AM Tuesday.

You like exercise, but your knees or legs hurt? Try water aerobics in the Main Pool, Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at 10:00 AM. Water exercise can be just as aerobic as general fitness exercise but it is easier on your joints.

Need a cardio program? Ask John to put together a routine using the machines. He will you tell the optimum amount of time given your situation. Or, take some of the classes. Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday at 8:00 AM – all are geared for total body conditioning. And don’t forget Zumba dance on Saturday at 10:00 AM.

The Fitness staff is available for personal training sessions. Sign up in the Fitness Center.

The American Contract Bridge League (ACBL).sponsors three annual North American Bridge Championships (NABC) each year. Hunters Run member Bob Lurie won this Championship Tournament in Chicago in 2015, playing in a two day Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams. He was a part of a team of six (three pairs). There were 82 teams from around the world. The Truscott/USPC Senior Swiss Teams is an event for four to six players in which participants must be 55 or older to compete. There is a one-day (two sessions) qualifying and a second day (also two sessions) final. Bob recalls that the top two teams were very close, and the winner was not decided until the final hand was played by the runners-up. His team won, not by spectacular play, but instead through unwavering consistency.

When he was 12 years old, Bob was taught to play bridge by his aunt and uncle. He became serious while a senior in high school where he played during lunch. In college at MIT he began to play with top players, meeting his partner there. They are still playing together after 50 years. He is now a Gold Life Master.

Bob came from the Boston area to Hunters Run three years ago, having good friends here. He plays two days a week at St. Marks in Delray Beach and occasionally plays duplicate bridge here with his wife, Ann. He taught on a cruise ship with Audrey Grant from 2005 to 2012.

He still enjoys competing at the top level and goes to tournaments 15-20 days each year. Besides playing bridge, Bob is a volunteer for Kids for Peace, where teenagers from Christian, Jewish, and Muslim backgrounds are trained together and inspired to become interfaith peace leaders.

A BRIDGE TO BRAINPOWER AND A HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

PLAYING YOUR CARDS RIGHT CAN HELP KEEP YOU SHARP LONG AFTER RETIREMENTBENEFITS OF MENTAL GYMNASTICS

According to AARP, bridge has allure for an estimated 25 million players in the U.S., including such fanatics as Warren Buffett and Bill Gates. The majority of players are over 50. Researchers have discovered that mentally challenging games such as bridge are well suited for older people because the games offer intellectual and social stimulation.

A study in 2000 at the University of California, Berkeley, found strong evidence that an area in the brain used in playing bridge stimulates the immune system. Researchers suggest that since players must use memory, visualization and sequencing, it might delay the onset of Alzheimer’s symptoms. The individual can function at a higher level.

The Alzheimer’s Association shared the results of a large-scale clinical trial in Finland that demonstrated the benefits of combining cognitive training and social activity — two of bridge’s chief benefits — with other lifestyle elements: that multiple changes in lifestyle can improve memory and thinking in those at risk for cognitive decline.

The 2017-18 Hunters Run season is off with a bang. The Tennis Pool is at full swing. The Turkey Mixer was well attended. We played three rounds followed by light snacks on the pavilion. All the snacks were eaten — which gave everyone a second wind to watch the exhibition match. The teams for the match were Mike Bucar and his identical twin brother,Steve, playing against Mali Hall and me. What an exciting match, lots of fun rallies and trick shots. Thanks to everyone who came out for the event.

Our first Ladies’ Night was a full house. Ladies were paired up and matches were arranged under the lights. We had a little light issue, but everyone had fun. Men’s Night has been a little tougher; we have to get you guys to sign-up. Games will be organized according to ability and depending on whether you win or lose determines which court you go to for the next round. Sign up online www.huntersrun.net .

LEAGUE TEAM PRACTICES AND CLINICS

Hunters Run team practices have started, getting players ready for the winter season. We have nine teams competing in the local leagues. 150 Hunters Run players compete in these leagues In addition, our Hunters Run pickleball league team (which ended up in first place) with 20 players, will be starting the new season in January.

There are clinics offered every Saturday by Mali and Mike at 8:30-9:30 AM for all level players and Sunday by Mike from 9:00-10:00 AM for beginners and intermediate players. Pickleball clinics are offered by Dave at 2:00-3:00PM for beginners and intermediates and 3:00-4:00 PM for advanced players. Please sign up for these clinics in theTennis Shop.

We have two new ball machines that are very user friendly. If you have not tried them yet, please feel free to get a tutorial from the tennis staff on the operating procedure of the machines.

Please congratulate our Mali Hall. She has just passed additional testing to become an Elite USPTA Tennis Professional.

Our next mixer is January 13th — our theme is the Australian Open; we will have light snacks after play followed by an exhibition match again. There will be no private or pool games that day.

Our Ladies’ Member-Guest is February 7th. Our theme is Red Hot Tennis. Last year we had a good turnout for the event, but this year I want a great turnout.

The Laser Links’ are an easy way to obtain accurate yardages to the target flags during practice sessions. Health & Wellness:In keeping with the “fitness” trend in this issue, here are a few sure-fire ways to build leg strength – and strengthen your golf swing. As with any exercise or exercise plan, please consult with a physician first:

USE AN EXERCISE BALL TO INCREASE LEG STRENGTH FOR GOLF Part Of A Golf Strength Training Program

Adding an exercise ball to your leg strengthening routine is another great way to mix things up by slightly altering some familiar exercises. When examining the proper golf swing, a strong lower body is crucial to maintaining stability and balance. A ball is fantastic for increasing the difficulty of your golf strength training program because it forces you to use muscles other than the primary mover to help stabilize. When focusing on leg strengthening, it is important to target some main muscle groups. These muscles are the quadriceps, hamstrings, glutes, and calves. You can work all of these muscles using an exercise ball!Check out the exercises listed below for some new ideas to add to your fitness routine:

Wall Squats: Stand facing away from a wall with the ball between your low back and the wall. Perform a squat by bending your knees and lowering until your knees are close to a 90 degree angle (you may need to move your feet a few inches in front of you prior to beginning the squat to accomplish this.) Return to starting position. If you want to add a quick calf workout, each time that you return to the starting position stand on your toes briefly before performing the next squat.

Ball Bridge: Lie on your back with the ball at your feet. Bend your knees and place your feet on top of the ball. Elevate your buttocks and hold. Return to starting position.Straight Leg Bridge: Lie on your back with knees straight and heels resting on the ball. Elevate your buttocks and hold. Return to starting position.

Alternating Straight Leg Bridge: Same as straight leg bridge but once rear end is elevated, slowly lift your right leg off of the ball, balancing with the left. Return your right leg to the ball and then lift your left. Once both legs are back on the ball, you can either continue to alternate leg lifts, or you can lower your rear end and repeat the process again from the beginning.Single Leg Squat:Stand on one leg in front of the stability ball, with the shin and front of the other foot resting on top of the ball.Perform a single leg squat by lowering your body with the stance leg.Be sure to make sure that the knee on your stance leg does not travel too far over top of your foot. If that happens, it will place too much stress through your knee.
