From the factories in Schwanau to the Pont Cardinet site The TBM for the first section is built in the Schwanau factories of Herrenknecht, the German expert in mechanised tunnelling technology (see box overleaf). The TBM is fully built and tested on site before being dismantled into several parts and transported in oversize loads to the site of the future Pont Cardinet station (17th arrondissement) in Paris. It is then gradually reassembled at the bottom of the station "box" and pointed towards Saint-Lazare station to start tunnelling. A three-stage journey The TBM for the first work package will bore a double-track deep circular tunnel with an internal diameter of 7.75 m, stretching 3,600 m between Rue de Londres in the 8th arrondissement and Rue Pierre Dreyfus in Clichy-la-Garenne. The TBM will be launched from the future Pont Cardinet station and will tunnel the first section towards Saint- Lazare station. Once dismantled inside the tunnel, it will be brought back to Pont Cardinet and craned around to point towards the Porte de Clichy station, which it will cross through. MAGALY: THE TBM FOR WORK PACKAGE 1 The extension of line 14 to Mairie de Saint-Ouen will mainly be carried out using two tunnel boring machines. Boring of the first tunnel section beneath Paris and Clichy-la-Garenne has been entrusted to the Eiffage and Razel Bec consortium, which owns work package T01.

From the factories in Schwanau to the Pont Cardinet siteThe TBM for the first section is built in the Schwanau factories of Herrenknecht, the German expert in mechanised tunnelling technology (see box overleaf).

A three-stage journeyThe TBM for the first work package will bore a double-track deep circular tunnel with an internal diameter of 7.75 m, stretching 3,600 m between Rue de Londres in the 8th arrondissement and Rue Pierre Dreyfus in Clichy-la-Garenne. Herrenknecht HERRENKNECHT is an expert in TBM construction. Ever since its inception in 1980, the company has supplied close to 34 TBMs to French sites. Its factories in Schwanau employ nearly 150 French workers. Herrenknecht has a subsidiary in France and is working on this project with a number of French companies, including Sotralentz Construction (shield and tailskin), SKF (bearings and erectors), Schneider Electric (electrical components) and Capelle Transports (transport).

Bonna SablaBonna Sabla (in partnership with Capremib), a leading French manufacturer of precast concrete elements, has fully modernised its factory in Conflans-Sainte-Honorine (Yvelines region) to manufacture the tunnel segments for the extended line 14. This order has enabled the consortium to create nearly 60 jobs.

TBM specificationsThe TBM measures 96 metres in length and weighs 1,400 tonnes, not including the back-up system which transports the segments and removes the muck. The bore diameter is 8.92 metres and the bore speed averages 12 metres a day.The TBM will install 14,700 segments.

Cutting wheel, the rotary part that bores through the ground using hardened

steel disc cutters and blades

Excavation chamber where the muck is provisionally stored before removal

Thrust mechanism which uses hydraulic cylinders to move the TBM forward

Erector where segments are erected and assembled to form the tunnel rings

Coupling comprising a sealed connection to allow curves in the bore

Slurry transfer pumps and tank

Control room

Segment transporter

Belt conveyor for removing muck

The EIFFAGE / RAZEL BEC consortium and its partnersBoring of the first tunnel section has been entrusted to the Eiffage and Razel Bec consortium, which owns work package T01. This package also includes building the Pont Cardinet and Porte de Clichy stations. To support the tunnelling operation, the consortium has contracted Herrenknecht to design and manufacture the TBM, and Bonna Sabla to precast the 14,700 segments (precast elements that form the final tunnel lining).
