Capstone Project
Background
■ Based on Cranfield University Group Design Project
■ Originally two projects (1992)
– Aircraft and Spacecraft
■ Success of team-style projects led to adoption across
Department (early 2000’s)
■ Evolved into multi-year projects often with external
collaborators and links to graduate research
■ Widely emulated (e.g. Ryerson, RMC, Ecole Poly.)
![Page 4: MAE Capstone Design Project Introduction and Overview · Capstone Project Coordinator –Prof. Jeremy Laliberté (jlaliber@mae.carleton.ca) –Ext 1128, rm 3148ME Learning Objectives](https://reader035.fdocuments.in/reader035/viewer/2022062919/5ee0cc6dad6a402d666be72b/html5/thumbnails/4.jpg)

Sign up Process
■ Web-based sign-up (open 26 March-27 April)
– Link to be posted on MAE website and emailed to 3rd year, 4th year
and co-op mailing lists
– Select 1st, 2nd, 3rd preference
■ Sign-up even if you might be on co-op
– In May-June you can decline and postpone to next year
■ Assignments based on:
– Degree program, project needs, scheduling, time of sign-up,
volunteer experience
– Each project will be restricted first to those students in that specific
program/stream then opened up if space/schedule permits

Undergraduate Directed Study
MAAE 4917 (0.5 credit)
■ For students seeking additional “research” experience
■ Calendar description:
– Student carries out a study, analysis, and solution of an engineering
problem. Results presented in the form of a written report. Carried out
under the close supervision of a faculty member. Intended for
students interested in pursuing graduate studies. Requires
supervising faculty member and proposal from student.
– Prerequisite: permission of the Department and completion of, or
concurrent registration in, AERO 4907 or MECH 4907.
■ Approach individual faculty in your area of interest first
