Library Happenings Estill Public Library by Shannon Horn “Third Spaces” Libraries are known as “third spaces”. A third space is a place within the community where peo- ple can go to relax and socialize. The two main spaces that a person goes to would be home and work/school. But libraries are outside of that realm; they create their own atmosphere where people are able to come and relax. Here at the library we have people come in all the time to work on a puzzle, read the newspa- per or get on the computer. They may not attend any programs that day or check any books out, but they are here to relax. Our current space allows this to some degree, but I can’t wait until we are in the new library and we are able to invite more people into our third space. I believe the little café that we will have may bring in more people. I’ve heard so many times about how cool it would be if our community had a place like Starbucks, where people could get a nice treat and a coffee. Well, we will have something similar to that in the new library. Not a Starbucks, of course, but you will be able to get a tasty treat! Teen Game Night Last week we had our most attended Teen Game Night since I have been working at the li- brary. There were 15 people in attendance. Kate- lyn had put together a Box of Lies game, as seen on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The kids had a lot of fun trying to trick their partners about what was in their box. I was rather proud of my own abilities to trick the kids. One of them said she wasn’t sure if she could trust me anymore. Several of them requested that we do it again sometime soon. Next time we will have to get more boxes. National Card Day October 5th is National Card Making Day. To celebrate, we will be getting out our Christmas card supplies for anyone who would like to come in and make some Christmas cards. It is almost here and what better way to get ready than to make some Christmas cards to give away. This program will be from 9:30-1:00. Teen Book Club Katelyn has been taking a break after Summer Reading from the Teen Book Club. Everyone need- ed some time off, but it is now time once again for the teens to get another book into their hands. I asked Katelyn if she would allow me to pick the book for them to read this go around. She was kind enough to let me choose. I selected the book Zlata’s Diary, written by Zlata Filipovic. Some have called her the modern Anne Frank, as her story is similar in the fact that her diary was written dur- ing a time of war. Teen Book Club will be meeting back up on October 21st at 3:30! Storytime Storytime has been such a blast the last little bit. A couple of weeks ago I had 15 toddlers for Friday Storytime. That was wild and fun. We are learning all kinds of fun things like letters, colors, shapes and animals. We still meet twice a week on Wednesday and Friday at 10:30. If you have a child that is 5 years or under, bring them in and have fun with us. I do want to go ahead and say I will not be having Storytime on Wednesday, Octo- ber 9th, but we will resume our normal activities the following week. We have some good stuff coming up this fall. Don’t miss out. Stop by the library and pick up a calendar!
